Is Sakamoto Days a repackaged Gintama?
Sakamoto Days is something I stumbled upon a couple of days back, and I am addicted to it.
SPOILER - I am not going to dwell on the details of the show. I’ve yet to watch the complete series, and this review is based on the first 5 episodes. So… there is that.

I fell in love with the show from the first episode. I mean, this is John Wick in a parallel universe, where the wife is not a victim of cancer and nobody killed his dog. A happily retired Hitman. And by the second episode, we were fully in love with the secondary characters to Shin and Lu. The third episode was fire and totally awesome, and that is when it hit me. Why I enjoy watching this series. It's because it has so much in common with Gintama. The zero motivation, fourth-wall break, mental fever.

Seriously, that is why I was loving it. It seems like a refined version of Gintama where the creator matured up and dropped all the parodies and fart-n-poo jokes. We have our main character, who happens to be a legendary figure but is now retired and wants to live a peaceful life. Sakamoto was an elite Hitman, and Gintoki used to be a Samurai. We have the comic relief Shin to Sakamoto, what Shinpachi was to Gintama. And finally, Lu, a girl from a foreign culture thrown into the mix, although Gintama to the foreign culture a step further, as Kagura happened to be an alien.

What's missing is the Parodies, and I think that's a good thing. Because if I wanted to watch a copy of Gintama, I would just watch Gintama again. With its weird comic style, character design and subtle storyline that is revealed in the long run. Gintama is goofy and perfect. And I dont think we need an exact copy of that. I believe that the makers of Sakamoto Days are inspired by Gintama and did well. From what I can tell within these five episodes that Sakamoto is going to be more story-oriented and grounded. It's evident that Sakamoto focuses on the Action, and Gintama is a comedy first. But it's very early for me to tell. And I am also interested in how the maker of the show will carry forward from here, because I think they did a pretty good job with hooking the audience in.
Now, with all these thoughts, I am interested in knowing who would win if Sakamoto and Gintoki had to go toe to toe. I am sure that it would never happen, given that Gintoki is a straight-up lazy person and would avoid fighting. You know what, I am going to watch Gintama again just to do this analysis.
