Movie Posters: Is a dead art?
No one is talking about this, or at least that's what is currently happening. I believe posters are an important part of the movie production. But lately all I am seeing is that the poster is filled with the starcasts in costumes and Makeups. I mean, here is an example. I just searched the Marvel movie poster on Google search for images, and look what popped up. It's just an ensemble of cast after cast after cast.
Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, Age of Ultron, Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Wasp are all different and unique and entertaining movies, but the posters feel boring, maybe except for Civil War and BlackPanther. And I am not picking up on Marvel. This is the same trend that can be seen across all the movie franchises and industries across the globe. Take X-Men, the latest trilogy of Star Wars. And the same is the case with the Indian Movies.
What I miss is the Iconic movie-defining poster. Means one look, and all the memories and emotions should rush back to the viewer. Take a look at these Posters and tell me that you dont know what I am talking about.

What does the portrait of Nicolas Cage made from Bullets tell you?

Or this one, where the face of the lead is not visible, but the theme of the movie is.

Next uses a shot from the movie itself. You know what you are about to step into.
Call me old-fashioned, but I love to see these posters over any other. How much weight do these carry in the digital age? I am not sure about that. But I'd love to see such designs in the new movies. Even when I am browsing the Movies on OTT, take a look at this, the only thumbnail that stands out is The Client. Because of the contrast. But Still. I guess I have to accept the fact that posters are no longer an Art. And the marketing team has taken over the Art department.
Hi Folks
I was just ranting here. You all know how much I love movies and everything related to movies (Except for the scandals and fabricated controversies). This is just me venting out my frustration here. Cheers.
What I love about this CINETV community is that the bloggers try to find the Best thumbnails for their blogs, and it looks Nice and feels good. Maybe the marketing team should try the same. LOL!! This is coming from a guy who knows nothing about marketing.
Even if posters don't mean as much in this age as they used to, it's still very important, because posters are still used for all the online advertisements, and the ones that would be shown in cinemas are still used offline.
We still get a perception of the movie and decide whether we want to watch it or not from posters, so the art should continue, and producers have no reason to settle for less.
Agreed but I feel like now a days it's like some AI generated crap and not a work of someone who love what he/she is doing.
I think its already a collectors items, you know like stamp collection and coin collection. LOL!! 🤣
True, it kinda looks like that these days. And sure, it's a good collectors item too 😀

They used to mean alot more for promotion for sure. I remember working at the video store and the posters on the wall were epic and made people excited. I miss those days!
Exactly, I mean the posters for some of the movies used to just logos like ghostbusters, jurassic Park, no actors faces plasters over anywhere to drag fans just a mystery that get people curious.
