I finished Special Ops season 2 this weekend, and I am somewhat disappointed with this season. I guess I'd better hand out the spoiler alert before going further into the review. So..

SPOILER ALERT: I am going to talk (well, mostly rant) about season 2 of Special Ops, an Indian spy thriller on Disney Hotstar. So, in case you haven't seen the series, you can skip the review and go for a view or not your wish.

Special Ops 2.0 starts off on a really interesting premise. An action-filled kidnapping of a leading scientist and a senior consultant for the Intelligence agency (RAW). Followed by the assassination of a key member of the Intelligence. Now this is a perfect hook for any viewer or fanatic of the genre. I, too, got pulled in because of the first episode. And from the next episode onwards, I am not sure what happened. Maybe someone in the writers' room got the brilliant idea, “You know if you keep throwing things at the audience, that will keep them engaged,” NOPE!! NO!! NO!! NO!!

This could have been a much better follow-up to the Special Ops 1.0, but we got a story that has pacing issues, too many characters running on parallel stories, and at times comes off straight-up annoying or dumb. I mean, the story flow asks the audience to follow as a side quest while not focusing on the main crisis. How can I explain the feeling to you?

Ah! Ok, let me try.. Imagine you are on a date in a restaurant. You know what you want to eat, you have Briyani on your mind, and you are ready with your order, but your date, on the other hand, starts a Kaun banega Crorepati (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?) rounds with the Waiter going through each dish, its ingredients, spice levels, and finally ordering the veg salad.

I am not sure if I got the point across, but that is what basically happened in this season. The start was awesome, and then they introduced a subplot that doesn't tie up with the main plot at any point. I guess that the writers were trying to show that the character is under a lot of pressure, but the forced storyline of chasing the bank defaulter didn't work for me. What I feel is that because of this side quest, the main story got impacted. The last episode felt very rushed. Even the ending, I mean, the agent killed the villain in a 2-minute fistfight. Arrghhh..

Well, to be honest, I am happy that it ended. I love the character Himmat Singh, a straight-up no-nonsense officer. Kay Kay Menon is in a league of his own. Chefs kiss his performance. As for others, I feel like they did put their best work, but got outshone by Kay Kay’s performance. The villain was interesting, but a missed opportunity. I guess what I am trying to say is if there is ever a special ops 3.0, I am sure going to watch it, but if there is a mention of any bank defaulter, I am cancelling my Hotstar subscription.
