They Call Him OG; I Call it Fan Service
I mean, that is what the movie is. A big fan service to PSPK (Power Star Pawan Kalyan). A big name in the Telugu film industry and the current deputy CM of Andhra Pradesh. I had high hopes for this movie, set in the late 90s and early 2000s, the movie is supposed to be THE EPIC gangster movie. But ended up being the victory parade for PSPK.
SPOILERS - I am not going to talk about the story in this review because there is nothing to talk about. Having said that, the movie is on Netflix India. So grab a popcorn. While you are at it, consider some noise-cancelling headphones and keep a Tylenol or a Saridon ready to pop.

I was expecting something like Bheemla Nayak, where the hero and villain are at each other's throats, and although many didn't like the ending, it was full-on entertainment. But this movie turned out to be a crazy fan edit of Pawan Kalyan showcasing mass entry and powerful screen presence. And that's the entire movie, one has to sit through the mass entry, re-entry, someone explaining their close encounter years back, people giving warning not to mess with the OG.. I mean, what the hell, man!! They made the character so Kickass that they had to introduce new threats every 15-20 minutes, as there are no asses left to be kicked.

I hope you have the Tylenol ready, because there are so many flashbacks that at one point it felt like a time-travel movie, and someone is trying to change something in the past. Probably stopping the funding of this film. I mean, the flashbacks were so confusing as no visual cues were there, and the entire movie had the same gangster, gritty, dark tone. I mean, the one time you expect someone to use the sepia filter to highlight the flashback, and they didn't. Because while the movie was running, I was busy calculating how much time had passed and which era we are in.

And if that's not enough, we have the “villain buffet”, there's the Villain Intern - Jimmy, the Villain Manager - Omi and the Villain Boss - David, who was working from Home half the movie. (Dubai), I dont understand what this obsession with using multiple villains. Is it to boost the Hero’s aura? And every 5 minutes, someone will spew some nonsense about “He is death”, “He is storm”, “We need an army.”, “You dont know anything. I have seen death up close.” or something random about the main character. And here I was thinking, how are you with your semiautomatic guns and bullets, are getting defeated by a guy with a katana, who is walking in SloMo most of the time.

I dont want to get into everything that irked me, because this review is going to be long, possibly longer than the first draft of the movie script. So let me focus on the positive aspect of the movie. It looks great, I am not lying, the shots were super cool. Like a graphic novel. It was giving me the Watchmen by Zack Snyder vibes at times. And the BGM was kinda loud, and when you have so much hyping and flashbacks of the main character, the BGM also feels repetitive. The background of OG being raised in Japan was nice, I think, but what threw me into fits was PSPK singing the “Washi Yo Washi” Japanese to the Villains. The English Translation had something about an Eagle. I mean, I was laughing too hard to catch the real transaction. Why would you give a warning or threaten someone in a tongue they dont understand, especially when the person has never spoken to you in that tongue?

Sorry, I went back to the nitpick mode, hey! If you are a PSPK fan, I know you have already seen it. But if you are looking for a stylised action movie, and the story doesn't matter, go for it. And if you're looking for a story, I recommend that the Washi should fly away from this one.

Hi

And let me tell you again, my views here are on the final product, the movie itself and not on the people. I am a PSPK fan too, but I am a fan of cinema first. That's all I have to share.
See you all soon, also like I mentioned in my previous blog. I am working on the financial blog and will soon publish it. I am putting in my real trading experience there so that is why it's taking time. So stay tuned.
As always, a big thank you to IndiaUnited and the BeAwesome community for the love and support.

Late 90s/early 2000s gangster movie... promising! Hope it's a wild ride despite the fan service vibe. 🍿 🤔
Well, the Fan Service kinda ruined it for me.
But you know what they teased part 2 at the end.
