Son muchas las razones por las que vamos postergando el visionado de un film. En este caso había algo de prejuicio en mí, pensaba que al ser una película que trata sobre dos grandes figuras de la Iglesia Católica de nuestro tiempo tendría cierto tono apologético, así que le fui dando largas… Pero hace pocos días al fin me decidí a verla y en verdad que me gustó mucho…

The Two Papas (2019) es una película dirigida por el brasileño Fernando Meirelles, sobre una adaptación del libro “The Pope”. La trama se ubica en los últimos tiempos del papado de “Benedicto XVI” (Anthony Hopkins) y su relación con el entonces Cardenal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce), actual “Papa Francisco”.

Las primeras secuencias se remontan al momento en que Joseph Ratzinger, es elegido como el Papa “Benedicto 16”, en el año 2005. Esas imágenes ponen énfasis en todo el ritual seguido para la elección de un nuevo Pontífice, pero al mismo tiempo nos van introduciendo en el ambiente de rivalidad existente entre el nuevo Papa y el Cardenal argentino. Cada uno representa una tendencia dentro del seno de la dirigencia Católica: Ratzinger, la más conservadora, apegada férreamente a los dogmas tradicionales, y Bergoglio, una más liberal, en la que cabe la posibilidad de renovar algunos conceptos que acerquen más la Iglesia a la gente de este tiempo…

Las diferencias entre las concepciones de estos dos hombres son irreconciliables. Esto lo entiende Bergoglio y por eso decide quedarse en su país dedicado a su trabajo apostólico. Llega un momento en que se cansa de que las cosas no mejoren al interior de la Iglesia y decide retirarse de su condición de Cardenal para quedarse como un sencillo Cura de parroquia, que es la situación donde se siente más útil.

Pero para Bergoglio darse de baja necesita la aprobación de Ratzinger, quien es su superior. Así que solicita una audiencia con el fin de hacer conocer su opinión y dejar en manos del Papa la formal carta de renuncia. No se esperaba Bergoglio que en ese mismo momento le llegaría una invitación para que compareciese ante el Papa.

Es en este encuentro de los dos hombres donde la película cobra toda su intensidad. Desde el principio es notorio el ambiente de incomodidad, se esquivan las miradas, se dejan caer disimuladamente unos cuantos desplantes… Pero estas diferencias no evitaran que ambos puedan actuar con sinceridad, manteniéndose siempre dentro de los límites del respeto. Al final ambos lograran decirse las verdades que cada uno guarda en su corazón…

Varias cosas me gustaron de la película. Una es el énfasis que hace en humanizar a estas dos figuras relevantes. Durante todo el metraje se nos recuerda que más allá del papel que tienen estos dos como máximos representantes de una de las religiones más influyentes del mundo, ambos son personas como cualquiera, con las mismas dudas e inquietudes que puede tener cualquier hijo de vecino, y que a veces la condición de máximos dirigentes mundiales puede representar una carga difícil de llevar.

Otro asunto que me llamó la atención es cómo la vida que hemos vivido nos puede acercar o alejar de los demás. Una de las cosas que impresionó a Bergoglio cuando es llevado a la residencia veraniega del Papa en Castel Gandolfo, donde sería recibido por su superior, es enterarse que Benedicto es un hombre que come solo, un dato que destaca su naturaleza solitaria. Para un Argentino, y diría que para casi cualquier latinoamericano, esto es casi inimaginable. En esta parte del mundo se prefiere comer rodeado de familiares, amigos y conocidos, porque el momento de la comida es un importante lugar de encuentro.

También se destacan las contradicciones humanas. Para muchos sectores de la dirigencia Católica, Bergoglio es un hombre radical, que tiene ideas que rozan el límite de lo intolerable, de lo sacrílego. Sin embargo, cuando Benedicto le confiesa que lo ha llamado porque tiene la intención de retirarse, de renunciar a su condición de Papa, Bergoglio no se lo puede creer. Le dice que eso va en contra de la tradición, de los principios, que el Papa no es un empleado cualquiera que pueda retirarse cuando lo desea. En ese momento Bergoglio deja aflorar la mentalidad más conservadora que también habita en él.

La película tiene momentos memorables como cuando los dos hombres se confiesan las cosas que los afligen. Bergoglio siempre ha dudado si actuó correctamente como superior de los Jesuitas en el tiempo de la dictadura militar en Argentina. Ratzinger se arrepiente de haberse entregado por completo a los libros, lo que le alejó de vivir la vida real. Es en la vejez que entiende que esa “falta de mundo” se ha convertido en un muro infranqueable para entender los cambios que la Iglesia necesita. Es tanta su claridad que decide que lo mejor es retirarse y por eso renuncia.

Destacan por mucho las actuaciones de los dos protagonistas. Anthony Hopkins deja una caracterización realmente conmovedora de un anciano que al final de sus años decide ajustar cuentas con sus dudas. Es impresionante el repertorio de matices que tiene este actor, la forma de tomar las manos del otro, la mirada vaga, el andar dubitativo, la risa contenida, son pequeños trucos que nos ponen en la piel del personaje. Una interpretación fuera de serie.

Jonathan Pryce también se luce en su papel. Su mirada, los gestos y la expresión corporal se corresponden perfectamente con el personaje real. Este actor ha debido pasar muchas horas viendo videos del Papa Francisco, para dar con las claves que le permitieran una caracterización muy creíble. Por esta interpretación estuvo nominado a los premios de la academia.

Como señalé al principio, la película me gustó mucho. Creo que tiene méritos suficientes como para darle un visionado. Se las recomiendo. Actualmente está disponible en Netflix.

But for Bergoglio to step down he needs the approval of Ratzinger, who is his superior. So he requests an audience in order to make his opinion known and leave the formal letter of resignation in the hands of the Pope. Bergoglio did not expect that at that very moment he would receive an invitation to appear before the Pope.

It is in this meeting of the two men that the film takes on its full intensity. From the beginning, the atmosphere of discomfort is notorious, glances are dodged, and a few rudenesses are slyly dropped... But these differences will not prevent the two men from acting sincerely, always keeping within the limits of respect. In the end, both will manage to tell each other the truths that each one keeps in his heart...

I liked several things about the film. One is the emphasis on humanizing these two relevant figures. Throughout the film we are reminded that beyond the role of these two as top representatives of one of the most influential religions in the world, both are people like anyone else, with the same doubts and concerns that any neighbor's son can have, and that sometimes the status of top world leaders can be a difficult burden to bear.

Another issue that struck me is how the life we have lived can bring us closer to or distance us from others. One of the things that struck Bergoglio when he is taken to the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, where he would be received by his superior, is to learn that Benedict is a man who eats alone, a fact that highlights his solitary nature. For an Argentine, and I would say for almost any Latin American, this is almost unimaginable. In this part of the world, people prefer to eat surrounded by family, friends and acquaintances, because the moment of the meal is an important meeting place.

Human contradictions also stand out. For many sectors of the Catholic leadership, Bergoglio is a radical man, who has ideas that border on the intolerable, on the sacrilegious. However, when Benedict confesses to him that he has called him because he intends to retire, to resign as Pope, Bergoglio cannot believe it. He tells him that this goes against tradition, against principles, that the Pope is not just any employee who can retire whenever he wishes. At that moment Bergoglio lets the more conservative mentality that also dwells in him come to the surface.

The film has memorable moments such as when the two men confess to each other the things that afflict them. Bergoglio has always doubted whether he acted correctly as superior of the Jesuits during the time of the military dictatorship in Argentina. Ratzinger regrets having given himself completely to books, which took him away from living real life. It is in his old age that he understands that this "lack of the world" has become an insurmountable wall to understand the changes that the Church needs. The performances of the two protagonists are outstanding. Anthony Hopkins gives a truly moving characterization of an old man who at the end of his years decides to settle accounts with his doubts. It is impressive the repertoire of nuances that this actor has, the way of taking the hands of the other, the vague look, the hesitant walk, the restrained laughter, are little tricks that put us in the skin of the character. An outstanding performance.

Jonathan Pryce also shines in his role. His look, gestures and body expression correspond perfectly to the real character. This actor must have spent many hours watching videos of Pope Francis, to find the keys that allowed him a very credible characterization. For this interpretation he was nominated for an Academy Award.

As I said at the beginning, I liked the film very much. I think it has enough merits to give it a viewing. I recommend it to you. It is currently available on Netflix.
