As a critic specialising in technical innovation in film, I found the controversial adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical "Cats" most fascinating.

Despite the divided reception, there is no denying Tom Hooper's daring to render the Broadway theatrical aesthetic with virtual realism.

The plot revolves around a tribe of cats - the Jellicles - on the night of the year when they make their most momentous choice: to decide which of them will be reborn into a new existence.

Every hair, texture and detail was painstakingly crafted, opening the door to new hybrid narratives.

And while the story could be improved, the stellar cast saves the day with hilarious, fully committed performances.

Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson and Rebel Wilson gave their all, bringing charisma to unique characters.

Undoubtedly, an ambitious step that sets precedents beyond its own quality. At the very least, a declaration of intent.

Other directors will learn from Hooper's rights and wrongs in this daring reimagining of theatre for the screen.

A pity that such daring visions were not more widely applauded around the world.
