Flatliners took the psychological thriller into bold new territory with its exploration of the afterlife.

Director Joel Schumacher created an unforgettable work that has only grown in esteem.

The cast is superb, led by Kiefer Sutherland in one of his most compelling roles as medical student Nelson Wright, obsessed with beating death itself.

Along with other students played with vulnerability by Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt, his secret experiments raise chilling questions.

Schumacher films the induction of near-death states in a fast-paced style, pushing the boundaries ever further to glimpse what lies beyond.

The hallucinatory visions they experience are brought to life by masterful cinematography and surreal visual effects that are still ahead of their time.

As the darkness of their past surfaces and the threat of permanent death looms, the mounting suspense kept me on edge throughout.

Flatliners, a horror film for thinkers that got under my skin for weeks, is nothing short of visionary in what it has achieved for the genre.

I'm convinced it will stand the test of time for exploring existential questions in such a fascinating and thought-provoking way.
