Love and Friendship is the title given to the film adaptation of one of Austen's most unknown novels, Lady Susan.

On paper, it breaks with several consolidated aspects of her style: it moves from narrative to letter structure and, in addition, it flees from the idyllic romantic story as the main driving force of the story.

However, her ability to create ironic, hilarious and critical dialogues and narratives, as well as to break the feminine and masculine clichés installed in Victorian social life, shines more brightly than ever in the irony of the story.

A self-interested young widow, an abused daughter, an American woman who married for convenience and a handsome young man make up part of the cast of characters who lie, criticize and tangle in this comedy.

Director Whit Stillman directs Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny in another sardonic, funny and somewhat cynical adaptation of one of Jane Austen's short works; rarely remembered or adapted to the screen.

The film depicts scenes from this epistolary novel, and adds new ones in which it replicates the delightfully mischievous tone of the original.
