The Italian comedy "Mafia Mamma" directed by Alessandro Pondi, presents the story of Marta, a woman who discovers that her late husband was hiding a past as a mobster.

Played by the diva Laura Chiatti, she infuses great nuance into this out-of-the-ordinary female role as she assumes control of the criminal gang.

From its impeccable production design rife with Sicilian detail to its cast full of charismatic supporting characters, Pondi transports the viewer into the entertaining underworld of black comedy.

Chiatti shines at the helm of a dedicated cast that celebrates Mediterranean mischief, especially alongside an inspired Memo Remigi in a small role.

Beyond the action and laughs, I highlight its fresh feminist approach to celebrating a strong, independent woman.

A pleasant surprise that reclaims the wacky humour of Italian cinema for its narrative freshness and hilarious plot twists.
