Paradise City surprised me with its gritty portrayal of crime and corruption in the music industry.

Director Sage Stallone created a neo-noir journey full of ruthless characters.

Bruce Willis is at his best as Pudge, a burned-out rocker who is dragged back into the Los Angeles underworld when his brother turns up dead.

He comes face to face with slick record executive Conrad, played to perfection by a scene-stealing John Travolta, whose mannerisms exude venom.

The women have their moment too: Ashley Greene shines as a femme fatale caught up in her war, while Pamela Anderson deepens her role as a rock matriarch.

The soundtrack is also riveting: Guns N' Roses guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal captures the grit and glamour of the Sunset Strip.

Stallone is at ease in a riveting noir plot, drawing the audience into the murky world of the music industry's excesses.

On the edge of your seat until the shocking finale. Even the greats like Willis are willing to take risks with the right material. With Stallone comes a major new directing voice.

Paradise City is destined to become a cult classic for genre fans. One of the biggest surprises of recent years.

I found Willis and Travolta's performances to be award-worthy in their tough roles, but unfortunately they were not celebrated.

Paradise City is one of the last films starring Willis, who retired from acting because he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
