Proximity, a masterpiece of modern science fiction.

Written and directed by Eric Demeusy, Proximity 2020 is a chilling and introspective sci-fi thriller that stuck with me long after the end credits.

Isaac joins the Proximity programme to test advanced technologies that allow for a deep emotional connection with other test subjects. But his growing closeness to Dr. Ava may hide ulterior motives.

Cinematographer Zach Kuperstein creates an unsettling tone as Isaac's reality becomes ambiguous - is there a real connection or has it been created for unknown purposes?

Ryan Masson is superb in the role of Isaac, sensitive but stubborn, making us trust his judgement despite plausible deniability in an environment that manipulates human contact.

Like Ex Machina before it, Proximity questions what is real in virtual bonds, how little we know the ‘partners’ who consent, and whether isolation ends up being humanity's only refuge. Demeusy's thoughtful script leaves plenty of room for interpretation.

The serene but conflicted Ava, played by Zara Ferra, moves masterfully between compassion and complicity in ambiguous designs. Her cat-and-mouse game is propulsive and unsettling.

Proximity, a haunting and haunting slow-action story, rewards those who enter its nebulous virtual future by questioning the cost of closeness in a world where nothing is safe and no one is what they seem.
