The peculiar film "Secretariat" directed by Randall Wallace in 2010, and starring the always efficient Diane Lane and the endearing John Malkovich, bases its premise on the true story of the famous thoroughbred winner of the North American Triple Crown in 1973.

Through flashbacks, the film chronicles the foal's upbringing and subsequent career under the care of his trainer Penny Chenery, who captivated America in the 1970s.

While it initially struck me as just another run-of-the-mill "racehorse" based on true events, I soon came to appreciate its narrative strength and eloquent performances.

Lane conveys her character's feminine grit and determination well as she takes over the family's Virginia stables, standing out among the equestrian testosterone, despite her ignorance of anything to do with the world of horse racing.

Malkovich, as usual, brings charisma to his supporting role. A simple but well-told story, which is moving beyond its predictable final triumph.

It garnered 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, with Diane Thompson winning for Best Editing.

It also grossed over $111 million at the box office.
