What would you do if a stranger offered you a million dollars for a night of passion while you were married?
This was the idea behind Indecent Proposal, the drama starring Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson and Robert Redford that aroused so much curiosity that it was one of the ten highest grossing films in the world in 1993.
Yet the film was slaughtered by critics. But... what if I told you that Robert Redford might have been partly to blame?

In the ending, Redford lets Moore go to her husband by presuming that she was still in love with the man who "sold her out" and was remorseful.
However, according to the film's screenwriter none of this would have happened if the studio and Robert Redford had approved her original vision. Because Amy Holden Jones had come up with a different version.
For example, in the first sketch it was all about trust and Diana not sleeping with Redford's character, despite having paid the million dollars.But [the executives] came to me and said, 'No, she has to sleep with him.'"
He even proposed that Moore leave the two men. That she not go back to either one. Which probably would have created a more ideal message of personal empowerment, not accepting her husband's distrust or the billionaire's desire to possess her.

But no one at the studio considered her idea. What's more, Jones had designed the ending of the film so that it was Moore who took the reins of her life and left the millionaire, but Redford refused. "The men in charge, and particularly Redford, decided to make the millionaire very sympathetic.
In the original script, it was a clear journey where she realized she had been his next acquisition.
In my draft, what she was telling him was that love can't be bought, and then she was leaving him. [Redford] changed it, because you couldn't leave Robert Redford." Because if Diana had been the one to take the initiative to break up with the millionaire, we would have been given an ending in keeping with the feminine vision proposed at the beginning.
A woman who made decisions, breaking the puritanical molds.
