H Haggis adapted his solid direction to grand vistas with The Mountain Between Us, squeezing a lush emotional melodrama out of dire circumstances in majestic locations.

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet impressed as strangers forced to rely on each other for survival after their plane crashes in an unforgiving desert: a budding respect that becomes an attraction that defies all preconceptions.

Veteran and distinguished cinematographer Eduard Grau immersed the audience in Haggis‘ vision, deploying breathtakingly expansive photography to complement the characters’ growing vulnerability and resilience in the face of breathtaking panoramas.

Despite its imperfections, The Mountain Between Us became a gripping and thought-provoking experience, addressing the ephemeral nature of life through the cruelty of circumstance in contrast to humanity's brilliant ability to come together in the face of any hardship, finding purpose through compassion.

Though perhaps too sincerely sentimental for some, Haggis' film stimulates a visceral reaction and a deeper reflection on resilience, redemption and why some souls were meant to find each other across any mountain, or divided planet.
