A businessman returns to his hometown to attend his father's funeral.

His mother's meticulous obsession with funeral rituals escapes him, but he eventually learns that respecting ancient traditions is crucial.

If you've never seen a Zhang Yimou film, this may be the first of several you'll want to see.

This film tells the story of innocence and love. There is not too much sentimentality and the performances are honest and sincere.

The colour change is very symbolic, as happy memories are presented in plush colours.

Zhang Ziyi is really great as Zhao Di, and her determination, will and generous nature make her even more sympathetic.

I was touched when she accidentally fell and lost her purse while running. Very touching scene.

Director Zhang Yimou deserves praise for telling this story brilliantly.

Simple things (the colours that change the seasons from spring to winter) create breathtaking images, such as wheat fields flowing in the breeze and forests full of bright leaves. Together with the tranquil soundtrack, this is a film worth watching.
