Strange World | Am I offending you? I can't tell

I had forgotten I had seen this movie until I read a news item yesterday that left me in shock and decided to write about it just to vent a little about everything that is going on in the world. This is just another generic Disney movie, a somewhat predictable story with some plot twists that make it a bit interesting, but not enough to make the movie memorable, it does have amazing animation and many landscapes that can amaze us and leave us breathless. I remember I found out about the movie before it came out because it went viral that it was going to be the first Disney movie that was going to show an openly gay male character, and already half the world was saying that just because of that the movie was going to be a failure, when they don't even have two neurons functional enough to understand that this gay character was going to be the last reason why the movie would fail, are they really so homophobic that they think that every movie that fails and has lgbtqia+ characters, fails because of that? Yes, they are, it's a pointless question, but I wanted to ask it anyway.

Strange World has several plots, but they all follow the Clade family, in the beginning they are going to show us an expedition that is looking for something that can help the city where they live, that expedition ends with the discovery of a plant, the separation of the Clade family and it is right there when they begin to show us the family traumas, although not for long because they make a breakthrough in time and then we see the Clade family again, now the son has become a father, he stopped being an adventurer and became a farmer, his true passion, but things start to go wrong again for everyone in town and the president asks Searcher for help to go on a new expedition to find out what is wrong so they can look for the necessary solution no matter how difficult the challenge in front of them is.

Había olvidado que había visto esta película hasta que leí una noticia ayer que me dejó en shock y decidí escribir sobre ella solo para desahogarme un poco de todo lo que está pasando en el mundo. Esta es una película génerica más de Disney, una historia un tanto predecible con ciertos giros en la trama que la hacen un poco interesante, pero no lo suficiente cómo para hacer memorable la película, eso sí, tiene una animación increíble y muchos paisajes que pueden llegar a maravillarnos y dejarnos sin aliento. Recuerdo que me enteré de la existencia de la película antes de que saliera porque se hizo viral que iba a ser la primera película de Disney que iba a mostrar a un personaje masculino abiertamente gay, y ya medio mundo estaba diciendo que solo por eso iba a ser un fracaso la película, cuando ni siquiera tienen dos neuronas lo suficientemente funcionales como para entender que ese personaje gay iba a ser la última razón por la que la película llegaría a fracasar, ¿de verdad son tan homófóbicos que creen que toda película que fracase y que tenga personanes lgbtqia+, fracasa es por eso? Sí, lo son, es una pregunta inútil, pero igual quería hacerla.

Strange World tiene varias tramas, pero todas siguen a la familia Clade, en un principio nos van a mostrar una expedición que está en busca de algo que pueda ayudar a la ciudad donde viven, esa expedición termina con el descubrimiento de una planta, la separación de la familia Clade y es justo ahì cuando comienzan a mostrarnos los traumas familiares, aunque no por mucho porque hacen un avance en el tiempo y luego vemos de nuevo a la familia Clade, ahora el hijo se convirtió en padre, dejó de ser un aventurero y se convirtió en granjero, su verdadera pasión, pero las cosas comienzan a ir mal de nuevo para todos en la ciudad y la presidenta le pide ayuda a Searcher para ir a una nueva expedición para descubrir qué es lo que está mal y así poder buscar la solución necesaria sin importar qué tan difícil sea el reto que tengan frente a si.

The movie is thoroughly entertaining, it's not the best in the world, but it's not the worst in the world either, it's a decent movie, it's enjoyable, it has an excellent ecological message and an amazing animation, but again, the problem with the movie is how generic the generational trauma of the family becomes with the people in power in the family trying to impose lifestyles that don't suit the tastes of their children, and this has nothing to do with the sexuality of the characters, although it can easily be taken as an analogy to that fact; for we have Jaeger, the grandfather, who wanted to force his son, Searcher, to be an adventurer like himself, then we have Searcher, who didn't follow that route and became a farmer, the best in the world, and wants his son, Ethan, to follow in his footsteps, but Ethan doesn't want to do it, he doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, much less what profession to pursue, so that trauma is so well represented that it desensitizes us in a way, and no matter how much we sympathize with Searcher and Ethan, we can't put ourselves in their shoes, because it's something that doesn't quite fit with the film. I mean, they can make a perfect comedy adventure movie with the first half of the plot, because it's too interesting and we have to accept that, but the moment they add the family drama to the equation the movie gets overloaded and it's too much for even the quality to keep up.

La película es completamente entretenida, no es la mejor del mundo, pero tampoco es la peor del mundo, es una película decente, se puede disfrutar, tiene un excelente mensaje ecológico y una increíble animación, pero de nuevo, el problema de la película es lo génerico que llega a ser el trauma generacional que tiene la familia con las personas de poder en la familia tratando de imponer estilos de vida que no van acorde a los gustos de sus hijos, y esto no tiene nada que ver con la sexualidad de los personajes, aunque puede tomarse facilmente como una analogia a ese hecho; pues tenemos a Jaeger, el abuelo, que quería obligar a su hijo, Searcher, a ser un aventurero como él mismo, después tenemos a Searcher, que no siguió esa ruta y se convirtió en granjero, el mejor del mundo, y quiere que su hijo, Ethan, siga sus pasos, pero Ethan no quiere hacerlo, no sabe lo que quiere hacer con su vida y mucho menos qué profesión ejercer, entonces ese trauma llega a ser tan bien representado que nos insensibiliza en cierta formay por más que simpaticemos con Searcher y con Ethan, no logramos ponernos en sus zapatos, pues es algo que no termina encajar del todo con la película. O sea, pueden hacer una película de aventura y comedia perfecta con la primera mitad de la trama, pues es demasiado interesante y eso hay que aceptarlo, pero en el momento en el que añaden el drama familiar a la ecuación se sobrecarga la película y es demasiado como para que siquiera la calidad se mantenga.

The news I read that shocked me and that was related to this movie was that a teacher in the state of Florida in the United States was under police investigation because she had shown her students a movie with a lgbtqia+ character. Over the past few months the amount of political content I have consumed has been gigantic, I think more than I have ever consumed in my entire life, and all of that content has revolved around the rights of lgbtqia+ people, specifically transgender people, non-binary, and drag queens, because in the united states there are already many states where it is practically illegal to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, where it is illegal to do drag shows, and I don't remember which state, but it is literally forbidden to say the word gay; they have used children as an excuse to ban drag shows, well, the readings that drag queens do to children in libraries and public places, because people think that is inappropriate and that children should not be exposed to drag queens, nor to any person from the lgbtqia+ community; furthermore, they are using transgender childhoods so that every transgender person, over or under age, is prohibited from accessing gender affirming care and attention, this being anything from respect for your name and gender you identify with, hormone treatments, and sex reassignment and gender affirming surgeries.

I know none of that matters to you and you've probably stopped reading up to this point, but how much damage have we in the lgbtqia+ community done to the world that our mere public existence is a crime and that we must hide like rats and cockroaches so we don't get killed, or humiliated? I mean, that elementary school teacher may go to jail for showing this movie to her students, and no one in the world is going to do anything to stop it. They are no longer hunting witches, now they are hunting people of sexual diversity and gender diversity.

La noticia que leí que me dejó en shock y que tenía relación con esta película fue que una profesora en el estado de Florida en Estados Unidos estaba bajo una investigación policial porque le había mostrado a sus alumnos una película con un personaje lgbtqia+. Durante los últimos meses la cantidad de contenido político que he consumido ha sigo gigante, creo que más de lo que había llegado a consumir en toda mi vida, y todo ese contenido a girado en torno a los derechos de las personas lgbtqia+, en espécificos de las personas transgénero, no binarias, y las drag queens, pues en estados unidos ya hay muchos estados donde es prácticamente ilegal ser gay, lesbiana, bisexual, transgénero, donde es ilegal hacer shows de drag queens, y no recuerdo cuál es el estado, pero literal está prohibido decir la palabra gay; han usado a los niños como excusa para prohibir los shows de drag queens, bueno, las lecturas que las drag queens le hacen a los niños en bibliotecas y lugares públicos, pues a la gente le parece que eso es inadecuado y que los niños no deberían ser expuestos a drag queens, ni a ninguna persona de la comunidad lgbtqia+; además, están usando a las infancias transgénero para que toda persona transgénero, mayor o menor de edad, tenga prohibido el acceso a los cuidados y la atención de afirmación de género, siendo esto desde el respeto a tu nombre y género con el que te idenfiques, tratamientos hormonales, y operaciones de reasignación de sexo y de afirmación de género.

Sé que nada de eso les importa y que probablemente hayan dejado de leer hasta este punto, pero, ¿qué tanto daño las personas de la comunidad lgbtqia+ le hemos hecho al mundo para que nuestra mera existencia pública sea un crimen y que debamos escondernos como ratas y cucarachas para que no nos maten, ni nos humillen? o sea, es posible que esa profesora de primaria vaya a la cárcel por haberles mostrado esta película a sus estudiantes, y nadie en el mundo va a hacer algo para evitarlo. Ya no cazan brujas, ahora cazan personas de diversidad sexual y diversidad de género.

Strange World is very good, but it has too many elements that don't fit together, it would have been better if they made it as a limited series, dealing with both the adventure and the family drama, but without mixing them so much that we couldn't enjoy each one separately, and finally I will say that for the first time I agree with the so much talked about forced inclusion, of course it is a forced inclusion, if they don't even let us live and exist with the same freedoms that cishetero people have, that is, we have to force our place in the world and our visibility in all possible media.

Ya me desahogué, no tenga nada más que decir, Strange World es muy buena, pero tiene demasiados elementos que no terminan encajar entre sí, hubiera sido mejor que la hicieran tipo serie limitada, abordando tanto la aventura como el drama familiar, pero sin mezclarlos tantos que no pudiéramos llegar a sabrear o disfrutar cada uno por separado, y por último diré que primera vez estoy de acuerdo con la tan hablada inclusión forzada, claro que es una inclusión forzada, si ni siquiera nos dejan vivir y existir con las mismas libertades que tienen las personas cishetero, o sea, tenemos que forzar nuestro lugar en el mundo y nuestra visibilidad en todos los medios posibles.
