Yes, I'm not hiding and I'll show it once and for all, I hope Look Back is the winner in this category. For those who don't know, next May 25th will be The Anime Awards of Crunchyroll from Japan where the best of the best anime of the past year will be recognized. In a previous post I told you about the best openings that were nominated; this time we will do the same but with the movies. There are 6 nominees: Look Back, Mononoke The Movie, HAIKYU!!! The Dumpster Battle, The Colors Within, SPY x FAMILY CODE: White and My Hero Academia: You're Next. Watching the films right off the bat, we know that the fight will be extremely close.

Si, yo no me escondo y lo muestro de una vez, espero que sea Look Back la ganadora en esta categoría. Para los que no lo saben el 25 de mayo próximo serán The Anime Awards de Crunchyroll desde Japón en donde será reconocido lo mejor de lo mejor del anime del año pasado. En una publicación anterior les hable de los mejores opening que estaban nominados; en esta oportunidad haremos lo mismo pero con las películas. Hay 6 nominadas: Look Back, Mononoke The Movie, HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle, The Colors Within, SPY x FAMILY CODE: White y My Hero Academia: You're Next. Viendo los films de buenas a primeras sabremos que la pelea será sumamente reñida.

The impact that anime like Haikyu and My Hero Academy have is massive, they are stories that have many fans behind them, so it is possible that one of these two could win the award. The issue is that their movies are a bit monotonous in the sense that they could be just another extended chapter of the anime, there is no noticeable difference in terms of plot or backstory. Haikyu I saw recently and the truth is that it is a very good film, the animation is especially good but I repeat, nothing remarkable. My Hero Academy has brutal animation as well but the latter is far from being better than the best films in the franchise.

El impacto que tienen animes como Haikyu y My Hero Academy es masivo, son historias que tienen muchos fanáticos detrás por lo que es posible que alguna de estas dos se lleve ese galardón. El tema es que sus películas son un poco monótonas en el sentido de que pudieran ser un capítulo extendido más del anime, no hay una diferencia notable en lo que a trama o trasfondo se refiere. Haikyu la vi recientemente y la verdad es que es un muy buen film, la animación es especialmente buena pero repito, nada destacable. My Hero Academy tiene una animación brutal también pero esta última está lejos de ser mejor de las mejores películas de la franquicia.

The Colors Within is a very introspective film that touches on very personal issues such as acceptance, we talk about one of the protagonists having mild autism, self-improvement and freedom from the social pressure that most young people can have. It is one of those films that leave a mark on you, that tend to be very sensitive. The plot is very simple, the animation is fine but that's as far as it goes. The soundtrack falls short. It's not a bad film but it's not up to the level of its contenders. SPY x FAMILY CODE: White is a very cool movie because it's full of comedy and action, I've always said that anime that go in this vein are the best. This one in particular respects the essence of its characters, maybe it gives the impression that it moves away from the main plot of the anime but that's just a perception.

The Colors Within es una película muy introspectiva que toca temas muy personales como la aceptación, hablamos de que una de las protagonistas tiene un leve autismo, la superación personal y la liberación de la presión social que pueden tener la mayoría de los jóvenes. Es de esos films que te marcan, te dejan una huella, que tienden a ser muy sensibles. La trama es muy simple, la animación está bien pero hasta ahí. La banda sonora se queda corta. No es una mala película pero no está al nivel de sus contendientes. SPY x FAMILY CODE: White es una película muy cool porque está llena de comedia y acción, siempre he dicho que los anime que van en esta onda son los mejores. Esta en particular respeta mucho la esencia de sus personajes, quizás de la impresión de que se aleja de la trama principal del anime pero es eso, una percepción nada mas.

Mononoke is one of the best I've seen visually, the art in its animation with the use of Japanese folklore is impressive, it's something very out of the ordinary. Besides the plot is very engaging, they are horror stories but I repeat, with undertones of Japanese culture. Both the anime and the movie are of high quality. It is true that we could also say that this film could be just another chapter of the anime, but I think that the particularity and improvement in the animation is what is really valuable here.

Mononoke es de lo mejor que he visto a nivel visual, el arte que hay en su animación con el uso de lo folclórico japonés es impresionante, es algo muy fuera de lo común. Además de que la trama engancha mucho, son historias de terror pero repito, con trasfondos de la cultura nipona. Tanto el anime como la película son de alta calidad. Es verdad que también pudiéramos decir que este film podría ser un capítulo más del anime, pero creo que la particularidad y mejora en la animación es lo realmente valioso acá.

Now my favorite and as I said at the beginning is Look Back. A very touching story, with a very special animation and above all it is unprecedented. I compare it a lot with Mononoke because there is a lot of art in it, it is not the typical movie with extravagant visuals and use of 3D or CGI, here the strokes and the design of the characters are very cool and particular. But I think the real value is the plot and its message, the depth that is in that story marks you a lot. That's why for me this film should win this category, I hope it does even though it is competing with much more important and popular titles.

Ahora mi favorita y como dije al principio es Look Back. Una historia muy conmovedora, con una animación muy especial y que sobre todo es inédita. La comparo mucho con Mononoke porque hay mucho arte en ella, no es la típica película con unas visuales extravagantes y uso del 3D o CGI, acá los trazos y el diseño de los personajes son bien cool y particulares. Pero creo que el verdadero valor es la trama y su mensaje, la profundidad que hay en esa historia te marca mucho. Por eso para mi este film debería de ganar esta categoría, espero que lo haga aunque esté compitiendo con títulos mucho más importantes y populares.

Last year Suzume won which is one of the best films that has been released lately and I think it is in the same line as Look Back in the sense that it was a totally new story and not derived from an already known anime. I already said it in my review of this film but honestly I highly recommend this movie, it is very special, delicate and touching.

El año pasado ganó Suzume la cual es una de las mejores películas que se han estrenado últimamente y creo yo va en la misma línea que Look Back en el sentido de que fue una historia totalmente nueva y que no derivaba de un anime ya conocido. Ya lo dije en mi reseña de este film pero honestamente les recomiendo mucho esta película, es muy especial, delicada y conmovedora.

I don't know which might be the best of 2024, but the one you comment on closing caught my attention for two aspects, one the art and two the connection it causes when you see it. Mononoke, without a doubt, is one of the best Japanese productions.

Both the anime and this movie are incredible. The way they combine both art, folklore and horror is very cool and original. I agree, it's one of the best of the list!
