If Curry Barker garnered attention for Obsession, Kane Parsons' work with this film is truly remarkable. Like Barker, Kane is also a 21-year-old YouTuber who rose to fame on the platform by creating horror shorts, which inspired this film. I find it fascinating that two of the biggest box office hits of the year so far are in the hands of emerging young talents and not the genre's established directors. Because that's another thing—we're talking about horror, probably the most difficult genre to pull off well. And so, Backrooms has positioned itself as one of the most incredible films, especially visually, that you'll see this year.

Si Curry Barker llamaba la atención por Obsession, lo de Kane Parsons con este film hay que sentarse a pensarlo. Y es que al igual que Barker, el bueno de Kane también es un youtuber de apenas 21 años de edad que se dio a conocer en dicha plataforma haciendo cortos de terror los cuales inspiraron esta película. Me parece fascinante que dos de los grandes éxitos de taquilla de lo que va del año estén en manos de jóvenes emergentes y no de los clásicos directores del genero. Porque esa es la otra, estamos hablando del terror, probablemente el género más complicado para hacerlo bien. Así es entonces como Backrooms se ha posicionado como uno de los films más increíbles, sobretodo en lo visual, que verás este año.

We have Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a man who works in a struggling furniture store. Things aren't going well for him personally either; he's a lonely guy whose wife left him, basically because of his personality, which has led him to see a psychologist to try and get his life back on track. I mention this because it's important to the plot. One day, while he's at the store, he discovers something on one of the walls—a kind of door/portal to an extradimensional space. To help you understand, it's like those glitches or errors in video games where you can sometimes pass through walls and reach a place outside of reality. Well, that's exactly what Clark experiences: he arrives at a place where nothing is what it seems, but at the same time, everything is.

Tenemos Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), un hombre que trabaja en una tienda de muebles a la que no le va nada bien. A él a nivel personal tampoco le va de maravilla, es un tipo solitario al que lo deja su mujer básicamente por su forma de ser lo que lo ha llevado a verse con una psicólogo para así tratar de enderezar un poco su vida. Digo esto porque es importante para la trama. Un día mientras estaba en la tienda descubre algo en una de las paredes, una especie de puerta/portal a una dimensión extra dimensional. Esto y para que lo entiendan es como esos glitch o errores en los videojuegos en los que a veces puedes traspasar paredes y llegas a un sitio fuera de la realidad. Pues eso es exactamente lo que Clark experimenta, llega a un sitio en donde nada es lo que parece pero al mismo tiempo lo es todo en uno.

Once Clark goes inside and disappears, Mary (Renate Reinsve), the therapist I mentioned, decides to go looking for him, partly out of guilt, which you'll discover when you see the film. She, too, will experience the reality of this space and realize that these corridors are not uninhabited and that the life within is among the most disturbing imaginable. The feeling while watching this film is one of utter bewilderment and oppression; this stems from the nature of the space itself. Those corridors, with their yellow tones and fluorescent lights, create a sense of confinement, of infinity, of being lost. But what's most terrifying is the palpable threat. The atmosphere is so strange and unsettling that discomfort arises the moment you step inside. Obviously, all of this contributes to the terror, as the fear of the unknown is what ultimately drives the plot.

Una vez Clark se adentra y desaparece, Mary (Renate Reinsve), la terapeuta de la que les hablé, decide irlo a buscar en parte por un sentimiento de culpa del que se enterarán cuando vean el film. Ella también vivirá la realidad de este espacio y de que esos pasillos no están deshabitados y que la vida que hay allí adentro es de lo más perturbador que puede existir. A ver, la sensación de ver esta película es de absoluto desconcierto y agobio; esto pasa por la naturaleza de dicho espacio, esos pasillos con sus tonos de amarillo y luces fluorescentes generan una percepción de encierro, de infinidad, de estar perdido pero lo más aterrador es la amenaza que se percibe y es que es tan rara y extraña la atmosfera que la incomodidad llega apenas se pone un pie en este lugar. Obviamente todo esto ayuda al terror y es que el temor a lo desconocido es lo que termina moviendo a la trama.

As I said, I think the visuals are the best thing about this film. Parsons managed to capture a truly unsettling atmosphere, which is ultimately what really matters. The Backrooms are exactly that: environments outside of reality, like a bizarre world, so the better they're done, the better the experience. The film—and I think it goes without saying, but it doesn't disappoint at any point—its first part provides context to get to know the protagonists and their traumas, because yes, this film is very much about that. The second part is the clash with the Backrooms and how they reflect a bit of the outside world. And something you need to know is that this place has a memory; it remembers EVERYTHING that happens and is experienced there, hence the absurd things you end up seeing.

Como dije creo que lo visual es lo más top de este film. Parsons logró captar un ambiente realmente inquietante que al final es lo que realmente importa y es que los Backromms son exactamente eso, ambientes fuera de la realidad, es como un mundo bizarro por lo que mientras mejor estén realizados, mejor será la experiencia. La película y creo que no hace falta decirlo pero en ningún momento decepciona, su primera parte es de contexto para conocer a los protagonistas y sus traumas, porque si, este film va mucho de eso, y la segunda es el choque con los Backrooms y como estos reflejan un poco lo que es el mundo exterior. Y es que algo que tienen que saber es que este lugar tiene memoria, recuerda TODO lo que pasa y los pasan por él, de ahí las cosas absurdas que uno termina viendo.

The acting is top-notch. Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance is excellent; he portrays a man deeply broken mentally, which translates into some truly unsettling and high-quality scenes. Renate Reinswe is also good because, despite being a mental health professional, she still has her own inner demons that haunt her every day. So, when you add up all the trauma, the unsettling nature of the Backrooms, and the horror that unfolds for no apparent reason—there's blood, death, suspense, and plenty of intrigue—you get a truly spectacular film. My conclusion is that you either love it or hate it 100%; there's no middle ground. Highly recommended; it is and will be one of the best of the year. Horror is back with a vengeance. El nivel actoral es top. Lo que hace Chiwetel Ejiofor es muy bueno, le toca interpretar a un hombre profundamente hecho polvo mentalmente lo que al final se traduce en escenas bien incomodas y de mucha calidad. Lo de Renate Reinsve también es bueno porque a pesar de ser la profesional de la salud mental igualmente tiene sus monstruos internos que la persiguen cada día de su vida. Entonces si sumamos todo el tema de traumas, el desconcierto que representan los Backrooms y el horror que termina sucediendo porque si, hay sangre, muertes, hay suspenso y mucha intriga pues no queda un espectáculo de film. Mi conclusión es que lo odias o te gusta al 100%, no hay tintes medios. Hiper recomendada, es y será de lo mejor del año. El terror volvió con fuerza. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.
