The Blood franchise is one of the best-known in vampire anime. Before Blood+ and Blood-C, a film came out back in the 2000s that was supposed to start it all, which is what we're going to talk about today. Personally, I'm a huge fan of everything related to vampires; if the plot and the way they're presented are appropriate and accurate in terms of their nature, then I'll enjoy it even more. Blood: The Last Vampire is a film that doesn't even last an hour, but I feel like it decently fulfills the premise of a horror and suspense story that focuses on vampires mixed into society.

La franquicia de Blood es de las más conocidas dentro del anime vampiresco. Antes de Blood+ y Blood-C salió por allá en los 2000 una película que en teoría sería lo que comenzaría todo que es de la que vamos a hablar el día de hoy. Personalmente soy muy fanático de todo lo que tiene que ver con los vampiros, si su trama y la forma en la que los presentan son las adecuadas y las más acertadas en lo que a su naturaleza se refiere pues más lo voy a disfrutar. Blood: The Last Vampire es un film que no llega ni a una hora pero que siento que cumple decentemente con la premisa de lo que es una historia de terror y suspenso que se enfoca en vampiros mezclados entre la sociedad.

We have Saya, a half-human, half-vampire woman who is working hand in hand with the United States government to eliminate all vampires who may be mingling with humans. This is set in Tokyo in the 1960s and takes place on a U.S. military base on Japanese soil, more specifically within the school on said base. She will have to infiltrate the base to kill some "chiroptera," or bats, that are apparently living around the student body.

Tenemos a Saya, una mujer mitad humana, mitad vampira que está trabajando de la mano con el gobierno de los Estados Unidos para buscar eliminar a todos los vampiros que puedan estar mezclados entre las personas. Esto está ambientado en Tokio en la década de los 60 y esta trama se lleva a cabo en una base militar del país americano en suelo japonés, más específicamente dentro del colegio de dicha base. A ella le tocará infiltrarse para dar de bajas a unos "quirópteros" o murciélagos los cuales aparentemente están haciendo vida alrededor del estudiantado.

The plot is super basic and elemental: Saya is searching for vampires to kill them all. In this type of film, you don't have to ask for much because I feel that's enough to make it work. Plus, the fact that it's so short makes it clearer and more direct to the point. I think what truly stands out is the character design. It's very interesting to see how some can generate "fear" or discomfort when watching them, and a clear example is the GIF above where we see a person transforming into one of these vampires. Both the human and the final form of this creature are disturbing, and that catches my attention because it adds an extra layer of terror to the film.

La trama es super básica y elemental, es Saya buscando vampiros para matarlos a todos. En este tipo de películas no hay que pedir mucho porque siento que eso es lo suficiente para que funcione además de que al ser tan corta creo que la hace que sea más clara y directa al grano. Creo que lo que verdaderamente destaca es el diseño de los personajes, es muy interesante ver cómo algunos pueden generar "miedo" o incomodidad al verlos y el ejemplo claro es el GIF de acá arriba en donde vemos a una persona transformándose en uno de estos vampiros, tanto el humano como la forma final de esta criatura es perturbadora y eso me llama la atención porque le añade un extra al terror que envuelve al film.

I'd like to call the animation "rough" because in terms of detail, it might feel a bit lacking in polish, but at the same time, it combines 2D and 3D in a very dark and sinister atmosphere, not to mention the inherent violence. Despite this, the film is visually perfectly understandable; the action and fight scenes are pretty good; and this is complemented by the constant nods to things very typical of horror films, such as the facial expressions of some characters, heart-rending screams, and the anxiety and suspense in the atmosphere. I didn't say it, but this takes place in the middle of Halloween, which reinforces everything I've said.

La animación me gustaría llamarla "tosca" porque a nivel de detalles puede que sintamos que no está del todo pulida pero al mismo tiempo combina cosa del 2D con el 3D en medio de un ambiente y atmósfera muy oscura y siniestra, esto sin hablar de la violencia innata que hay. A pesar de esto la película visualmente se entiende perfectamente, las escenas de acción y de pelea no se van mal; y a esto se le complemente los guiños que siempre vemos de cosas muy típicas de films de terror como las expresiones faciales de algunos personajes, gritos desgarradores y la zozobra y el suspenso en el ambiente. No lo dije pero esto se da en medio del Halloween, cosa que alimenta todo lo dicho.

At the character level, Saya is unusual. She's extremely quiet; her voice is rarely heard. She's very violent, even when helping others. When she feels threatened, she's very reactive and doesn't beat around the bush. We even see this in her relationship with the American agents; they are terrified of her and always try not to upset her. I think the innate nature of vampires consumes her, although it would be interesting to know her background and past. I haven't seen the two animes, so I don't know if they explain her origins. It's a very decent movie to watch; it's short, which helps. It has a bit of everything: violence, mystery, suspense, horror, and a very easy-to-understand plot. For those days when there's nothing else to watch, it's perfect. I'll leave the trailer below.

A nivel de personaje Saya es particular. Ella es extremadamente callada, muy rara vez se le escucha la voz, es muy violenta incluso al momento de ayudar a otro y cuando se siente bajo amenaza es muy reactiva, no se anda con cuentos. Incluso lo vemos en la relación que tiene con los agentes americanos, ellos le tienen un miedo muy grande por lo que siempre tratan de no hacerla molestar. Creo que la naturaleza innata de los vampiros la consume aunque sería interesante saber su contexto y pasado, no he visto los dos anime por lo que no se si en ellos explican un poco el origen de ella. Es una película muy decente para verla, es corta cosa que ayuda, tiene de todo un poco, violencia, misterio, suspenso, terror y es una trama muy sencilla de entender. Para esos días cuando no hay nada que ver está perfecta. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

Esta película la vi hace un tiempo y concuerdo contigo en que la trama es básica. Algo que la distingue es esa animación tosca, pero que deja ver o en momentos resalta ciertos aspectos.

I saw this movie a while ago and I agree with you that the plot is basic. Something that sets it apart is the rough animation, but it allows you to see or at times highlights certain aspects.

Yes, it's quite rudimentary, but I think that gives it an extra essence that makes it interesting. At least the rawness is noticeable, and that's what's most striking.

Pretty cool. Saya is a half crazy vampire. The movie is short but it has a good horror, violence and suspense vibe to it. The rough animation helps to create a dark and sinister atmosphere. Saya is a very intense character, to say just one word.
