(ESP-ENG) F1: The Movie | 2 hours of pure speed - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Films based on a particular sport can be a bit tricky to watch if you're a fan of that sport. Formula 1 is very unique because it has very specific ways of handling things, which is why, to watch this film, I took off my fanboy costume and put on that of a film buff. Otherwise, I could have succumbed to cynicism to the point of not being able to properly enjoy this film. I firmly believe this is one of the best films of the year, and the result was a spectacle, especially visually and at the camera level, which, in my opinion, was the most difficult aspect to achieve.
Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) is a highly experienced driver who once had a golden opportunity in F1, but due to life circumstances, he was unable to continue. Dedicated to other pursuits within the same world of motorsports, one day he receives a visit from a friend and former racing teammate, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who is now the owner of one of the F1 teams on the season's grid. This team is a disaster, starting with the car they have and the fact that there is no true leading driver to take the reins; Ruben's idea is for Sonny to be that driver.
On the team, there's a driver named Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), who's supposed to be the sport's newest prospect, but he's incredibly arrogant and conceited. The plot basically revolves around how Sonny adapts to a new F1, to this young driver, and, above all, how the competition adapts to the unconventional ways and style of this veteran. Let's first talk about the story, or the plot itself. I think it's typical of any sports film, where there's rivalry between teammates. At first, they don't get along, things don't go as expected, but then a canonical event occurs that unites everyone to help the team move forward.
In that sense, the plot doesn't have much to offer; for the film it is, it's perfect. The truly strong point is everything related to the visuals, the cameras, and the way this was filmed. Obviously, they worked closely with F1; one of the producers is none other than Lewis Hamilton, and that's something that shows. Filming this film took two years, and it's something we can see in every shot. The on-board images are insane; the scenes in the middle of the Grand Prix, during the races, the appearance of the drivers, the atmosphere in the paddock—everything is a carbon copy of what you actually experience at a race. They managed to capture the atmosphere perfectly.
Being a film, it's obviously fictional, and some of the things that happen during the races don't happen in real life. There are rules that apply to these things. But there's nothing wrong with that because it only makes the film more entertaining. Racing can be very boring at times, and these dramas are more than necessary. Personally, I was never bored; I think that, whether you're a sports fan or not, it's a very enjoyable film. The acting was decent; I feel like it's not a job that requires great or Oscar-worthy performances; Brad Bitt always delivers. The rest weren't bad either, but it's not something that needs to be covered in detail.
This is one of the best films of the year, a resounding box office success, grossing over $600 million. I give it a 9.5/10. It's flawless, technically very well done, visually spectacular, and in the end, it was a risk to make something like this and have it turn out so well. It's over two hours long, but it's completely worth it. I'll leave the trailer below.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well, that's all for today, everyone. I hope you enjoyed it.
