Curry Barker's name is everywhere these days, given the impressive success of "Obsession." People are wondering how a YouTuber could have made such a film, and the truth is, everything has one or more origins; things don't just appear out of thin air. First, he studied film, which explains his knowledge and ability to achieve what he has. Second, for the past couple of years, he's been showcasing his own creations on his YouTube channel, which are truly incredible and undoubtedly sparked everything. Today, I'm going to talk about "Milk & Serial," a short film just over an hour long that's definitely worth watching.

El nombre de Curry Barker está en todos lados actualmente dado el impresionante éxito que está teniendo "Obsession". La gente se pregunta como es posible que un youtuber haya podido hacer semejante película y la verdad es que todo tiene un o varios orígenes, las cosas no nacen de la nada y porque si. Primero que es alguien que estudió cine, de ahí los conocimientos que pueda tener para lograr lo que ha conseguido y lo segundo es porque desde hace un par de años desde su canal de YouTube él ha empezado a mostrar cosas hechas por él mismo que la verdad son increíbles y que sin dudas fuera la chispa que empezó todo. Hoy les vengo a hablar de "Milk & Serial", un cortometraje de un poco más de una hora que no puede pasar desapercibido.

We have Milk (Barker) and Seven (Cooper Tomlinson), who run the YouTube channel "that's a bad idea." Here we see them planning Milk's birthday party, but in the midst of it all, they're also trying to play pranks on each other. Basically, things get so out of control that the situation becomes incredibly macabre, and things go terribly wrong. The pranks become somewhat vengeful, but of course, everything starts to escalate, and out of nowhere, pure terror is unleashed. But this doesn't happen by chance. As the film progresses, we realize that things aren't what they seem at first glance, that these content creators have dark secrets, including the fact that one of them might be a serial killer and plans to make one of his friends his next victim.

Tenemos a Milk (Barker) y a Seven (Cooper Tomlinson) quienes son los que llevan el canal de YouTube "that's a bad idea". Acá los vemos planeando el cumpleaños de Milk pero en medio de eso también se están buscando hacer bromas entre ellos. Basicamente llega un punto en donde todo se descontrola de tal manera que la situación se vuelve super macabra y las situaciones salen terriblemente mal. Las bromas se vuelven un tanto vengativas pero claro, todo comienza a escalar y de la nada se desata el terror puro. Pero esto no pasa porque si, a medida que avanza el film nos vamos dando cuenta de que las cosas no son como se ven a simple vista, que estos creadores de contenido tienen secretos turbios incluyendo que uno de ellos puede ser un asesino serial y planea convertir a uno de sus amigos en la próxima victima.

In the end, it's the pure degradation of a simple joke. It's like a snowball that keeps getting bigger and bigger, in that something so "harmless" ends up becoming a bloodbath with truly uncomfortable and disturbing situations. One thing this film does well is use paranoia in the viewer, playing with the doubt about what might be real and what might not; the intrigue of what each protagonist's next move will be, and, of course, the surprise generated every time something happens. Barker spent a mere $800 on this, so everything is filmed in the most "rudimentary" way possible, typical of these amateur films. This doesn't mean it looks bad; on the contrary, it generally makes the atmosphere and the experience more "real" and immersive.

Al final es la degradación pura de una simple broma. Es como una bola nieve que cada vez se va haciendo más grande en términos de que algo tan "inofensivo" se va a terminar convirtiendo en un baño de sangre con situaciones realmente incomodas y perturbadoras. Hay algo que tiene este film y es que usa muy bien la paranoia en el espectador, juega con esa duda sobre que pueda ser real y que no; la intriga de cual va a ser el próximo movimiento de cada protagonistas y obviamente con la sorpresa que genera cada vez que sucede algo. Barker se gastó en esto apenas $800 por lo que todo está grabado de la manera más "rudimentaria" posible, algo típico de estos metrajes amateurs. Esto no quiere decir que se vea mal, por el contrario, general que el ambiente y la experiencia sea más "real" e inmersiva.

Little is said but Curry Barker's quality of acting is quite good, he has some scenes that are very disturbing and uncomfortable to watch, just like Cooper Tomlinson, who ends up acting in Obsession. I say this because Milk is clearly not well mentally and that instability is played perfectly by Barker. What more can you tell them? - it doesn't bore, it keeps you hooked precisely because of how unexpected the plot ends up being, there is terror, suspense and why not, it could also be classified as a psychological thriller. I want to take advantage of this so that, in addition to this, they can see another short film called "The Chair", something that even won some awards, on the same channel and product of Curry Barker's mind (he always puts this in his films).

Se habla poco pero la calidad de actuación de Curry Barker es bastante buena, tiene unas escenas que son bien perturbadoras e incomodas de ver al igual que Cooper Tomlinson, que al final termina actuando en Obsession. Lo digo porque Milk claramente no está bien mentalmente y esa inestabilidad la interpreta a la perfección Barker. Que mas se les puede decir? - no aburre, te mantiene enganchado precisamente por lo inesperada que termina siendo la trama, hay terror, suspenso y porque no, se le pudiese catalogar también como un thriller psicológico. Quiero aprovechar para que además de esto vean en el mismo canal y producto de la mente de Curry Barker (esto siempre lo pone en sus metrajes), otro cortometraje llamado "The Chair", algo que incluso ganó algunos premios.

"The Chair" is shorter but incredibly intense. It's a horror film with paranormal undertones, which also incorporates elements from Obsession. It's worth noting that they aren't the main characters here; Barker's role is purely that of director. So, to understand the success Barker is having with Obsession, it's necessary to look back and see, for example, these two. He has more in this style on his channel, but I think these two are the most powerful and striking. I've included the corresponding videos below for you to check out; they're 100% worth it.

"The Chair" es más corto pero con una intensidad pasmosa. Es un terror con tintes paranormal el cual también tiene cosas que vemos en Obsession. Decir que acá ellos no son protagonista, el rol de Barker es netamente de director. Entonces para entender el éxito que está teniendo Barker con Obsession es necesario mirar hacia atrás y ver, por ejemplo, estas dos cosas. Tiene más de este estilo en su canal pero creo que este par son los más potentes y llamativos. Por acá abajo les dejo el video correspondientes para que le echen un ojo, vale 100% la pena.
