(ESP-ENG) Obsession | Be careful what you wish for - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.

For a long time, anyone making YouTube videos was the target of criticism and derogatory comments, accused of wasting their time, being told to get a real job, and so on. This still happens today, but there are fewer and fewer close-minded people. Why do I say this? Because Curry Barker, the director of this wonderful film, is a YouTuber. What impresses me most is the ability this 26-year-old had to put most established directors of the genre to shame with an original, clever film, unpretentious and made without big-budget special effects (less than $1 million), which ultimately perfectly captures the essence of true horror.
Obsession tells us that sometimes wanting something so intensely can be very dangerous. Bear, an ordinary guy, shy and incredibly unwilling to speak his mind, is in love with his friend Nikki. They're very close friends, but he sees her as something more, while she doesn't feel the same way. Lacking the courage to tell her how he feels, he decides to use a kind of esoteric object/game to try and make things easier. In his desperation to have his feelings reciprocated, Bear wishes, through this object, that Nikki would love him unconditionally and more than anything in the world. Big mistake. Soon our protagonist will realize that Nikki is no longer the sweet, cool girl everyone knew; something has happened, and things are about to get truly terrifying.

Almost instantly, Nikki's change is radical and profound; her behavior is highly erratic and unsettling to watch, to the point that we're dealing with a full-blown stalker, driven by a macabre obsession, as the film's title suggests. The film essentially shows us Bear's life, but with the added element of having Nikki in it—not just any Nikki, but a truly "damaged" one. I have to say right now that this film is one of the best I've seen this year, and probably in the last few years; it's truly excellent. It's not paranormal horror, but rather horror born from human behavior, a kind of psychological thriller where, yes, terror is present, represented through various techniques that Barker uses to perfection.
One of the techniques is using Nikki's silhouette, but in shadow. This is meant to suggest that there's something dark about her, implying that this isn't the real Nikki. This makes the scenes unsettling and even disturbing. The film uses this technique in several scenes, and it works perfectly because the context is just right. The light in her dark eyes is another element; obviously, there's no hint of anything demonic, but it does add to the suspense. And of course, if it's a horror film, there has to be something else to support it, and yes, there's blood, there's gore, there are scenes that are truly difficult to watch, but I think in the end, it all comes down to Nikki's behavior and how well the acting is. Inde Navarrete is everything in this film; it's because of her that Obsession became the movie it is.
At first glance, it seems simple, but her performance is top-notch. The dialogue, and especially the drastic shifts in personality and mood throughout the scenes, are incredible. This role will undoubtedly catapult her to stardom. While she has appeared in some smaller projects, nothing compares to this film, and especially not with this performance. For me, this movie is a 9.5/10, if not a 10. It has everything to be considered an excellent horror film. Highly recommended to everyone. I've included the trailer below.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well folks, that's all for today. I hope you enjoyed it.
