(ESP-ENG) Sisu - When death is not an option!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Are you a fan of Quentin Tarantino? or more specifically of films like Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill? - If the answer is yes, then let me introduce you to this film, Sisu, which I would categorize as a close relative of the two examples I just mentioned. I had heard of this film as a paradise of violence and revenge but until I saw it I could not believe that; now that I enjoyed it I can say that there is no mistake in that description, it is everything I imagined and even more. I know I set the bar pretty high by comparing it to those two Tarantino monsters but in form, substance and essence it is very similar, in fact even in how the story is told there are similarities.
Sisu is one of those movies that you have to watch without thinking too much, just letting yourself go and enjoying the road full of revenge and survival. Who doesn't like to see a bunch of Nazi bodies flying through the air and being killed in cold blood? - I think it's one of the pleasures, as strange as it may sound, that I can have and I'm sure many are in the same tune as me. The thing is that we are facing a film quite explicit and full of violence and blood everywhere that leaves no room for imagination and if we think about it, these stories always work and an example of that is this one in question. But well, without further ado, let's talk about this man who does the impossible to defend his own.
This story begins with Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) an old miner who is looking for gold in a Finnish desert to improve his life and start from scratch. We are set in 1944, a time when the Nazis already knew what their destiny was going to be, so this squadron in question was retreating to Norway when they find this lone wolf, because yes, there is no better nickname for him than that. Everything starts to get complicated when they realize that this man had large amounts of gold in his possession and as good Nazi cowards and opportunists decided to steal it or try to do so without knowing the big mistake they were about to make. And I speak of a mistake since they will soon discover who this "miner" really is.
Sisu, in the Finnish dialect, does not have a clear and concrete meaning but it is more like determination, courage, desire, overcoming really adverse situations and where the chances of success are very few and scarce. All that feeling behind that word we will see it reflected in this man as he will do the impossible to recover his gold and if that means taking a few Nazis to the other world, he will do it. The truth is a film that has hardly any dialogue, I think they do not need given the nature of it and is pure action and persecution in much of the time.
The film has several aspects that always manage to connect with the viewer and that are very used throughout the story: the use of an animal figure as a faithful companion, something very classic John Wick style, in this case there is a horse and a dog, which seeks to create an emotional attachment so that the story comes more effectively and secondly we have the feeling of resentment towards the image of a Nazi along with the pleasure, as I said earlier, to see an entire SS squadron to be exterminated at the root. These are very basic elements but they work perfectly; what is Inglourious Basterds in the end? - Well, it's a revenge-based Nazi killing spree. Sisu doesn't stray far from that reality.
The structure of the film that we are shown is also quite curious because it is divided into chapters, all in a very direct and to the point, there are no jumps in the story, nor much depth in the plot, you know how it starts and you also know how it will end, there are no surprises. There is nothing wrong with this because the purpose of the film is very clear: to entertain with a film that is half war western riddling some beings that nobody will miss. And all this through the infinite desire of not wanting to die of a man who will not rest until his goal is achieved and is that in parts of the story they call him "the immortal" but nothing further from reality, is a man who simply refuses to die.
The primary engine of the film is revenge and we see it not only from this man towards the Nazis but also through a group of women who, tired of so many vexations, take justice into their own hands. I am not going to say that it was not satisfying because I would be lying; and I say again, it is a film that seeks to please visually and emotionally. Visual because I will tell you and warn you, it is quite raw and gory. You will see bodies exploding, being mutilated, run over, hanged, shot and a long etc. This will always be a very good extra because when used in the right way it will always catch your attention, it will always make you stay enraptured in front of the screen.
I don't talk much about the characters because, as I already mentioned, this is a film where the lines and the script are not worthless, but rather they take a back seat, since the director's intention, I infer, is different. It is a basic and rudimentary film but it fully complies with what it wants to propose. But if we want to talk a little about Tommila, the truth is that he is a real master, the character of invincible and foolproof does it perfectly, a person with an insurmountable determination that I think is the important thing, he is not immortal as already said, he is flesh and blood and look that you will realize that but it is the great perseverance that makes this man get up from the ground with more and more strength.
Anyway, a great movie which I enjoyed from minute one to the end. It's one to watch without thinking about logic or that this or that doesn't make sense, just play it and watch the journey of this "miner" as he takes revenge by killing people mercilessly. I give it an 8/10, no more. I recommend it to all fans of this type of cinema and to those who don't as well, I assure you that you will end up liking it. It has a duration of an hour and a half. I leave here the trailer so you can see what it's about and how it looks like.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
