Perder a un ser querido es probablemente la cosa más difícil y complicada de llevar sea quien seas, si a esa situación le sumas que eres una persona joven, saliendo de la adolescencia, y estás rodeado de eso, de jóvenes tomando decisiones muy cuestionables por no decir estúpidas es muy posible que lo que termines o terminen haciendo sea una metida de pana monumental. Pero también cabría hacer la pregunta, hasta donde serías capaz de llegar para poder hablar con esa persona que se fue? - eso dependerá de como lleves el duelo y de que tan maduro seas. Y no amigos, no estoy desvariando ni nada por el estilo, esto lo digo con la intención de que tengan un poco de contexto ya que esta película va de eso, de decisiones tontas acompañadas de personas jóvenes muy influenciables.

Losing a loved one is probably the most difficult and complicated thing to deal with whoever you are, if you add to that situation that you are a young person, coming out of adolescence, and you are surrounded by that, young people making very questionable if not stupid decisions, it is very possible that what you end up or they end up doing is a monumental mess. And no friends, I'm not ranting or anything like that, I say this with the intention that you have a little context because this movie is about that, of foolish decisions accompanied by young people very influential.

La cantidad de criticas positivas que he visto de este film es sorprendente y es que si a eso le sumamos que es una creación de A24 pues el resultado tendría que ser espectacular. Pero hay un detalle, soy muy cínico y estoy casi seguro que esa característica hizo que viera el film muy predispuesto porque al fin y al cabo es terror, vuelvo a repetir, mi genero favorito y como tal se que es complicado que quede complacido. Sabiendo esto igual la vi, la disfruté pero no vi esa gran película de la que todos hablan, es novedosa, está bien hecha para ser un film casi que independiente pero hasta ahí. Así que bueno, vayamos entonces y hablemos un poco de lo que es esta historia que involucra una mano que conecta el mundo de los vivos con el de los muertos.

The amount of positive reviews I have seen of this film is surprising and if we add to that the fact that it is a creation of A24, the result should be spectacular. But there is a detail, I am very cynical and I am almost sure that this characteristic made me see the film very predisposed because at the end of the day it is horror, I repeat, my favorite genre and as such I know that it is difficult to be pleased. Knowing this I still saw it, I enjoyed it but I did not see that great film that everyone talks about, it is novel, it is well made to be an almost independent film but that's as far as it goes. So, let's go ahead and talk a little bit about this story that involves a hand that connects the world of the living with the world of the dead.

Comenzamos con Mia (Sophie Wilde), una muchacha la cual no lo está pasando del todo bien en su vida debido a que el trauma por la trágica muerte de su madre lo lleva en su espalda a pesar de que han pasado varios años. La relación con su papa tampoco es la mejor por lo que siempre busca refugio en sus amigos, mientras más tiempo esté fuera de su casa, mejor será para ella. Como típicos adolescentes siempre están haciendo fiestas y reuniones para pasar el tiempo, el detalle es que estos no se divierten con alcohol o con alguna otra sustancia de dudosa procedencia, lo hacen con una mano embalsamada que irónicamente si es de dudosa procedencia ya que unos dicen que perteneció a un vidente, a un espiritista, etc.

We start with Mia (Sophie Wilde), a girl who is not having a good time in her life because the trauma of her mother's tragic death is still on her back even though several years have passed. Her relationship with her father is not the best either, so she always seeks refuge in her friends, the more time she is away from home, the better it is for her. As typical teenagers they are always having parties and meetings to pass the time, the detail is that they do not have fun with alcohol or any other substance of dubious origin, they do it with an embalmed hand that ironically is of dubious origin since some say that it belonged to a seer, a spiritualist, etc.

Pero esta mano no es cualquier cosa, es una que funciona como un puente para invocar y comunicarse con los muertos. Como casi siempre pasa en este tipo de historias una vez que se abre una puerta pasan dos cosas: o entran cualquier cantidad de espíritus a este plano o dicha puerta es casi imposible de cerrar nuevamente; acá pasan las dos. De aquí en adelante este grupo de jóvenes, en especial Mia ya que en algún momento de logra comunicar con su madre muerta, tendrán que buscar la manera de deshacer todas esas invocaciones que hicieron sin tener idea del peligro que ese iba a traer más adelante. Y es que al final en la vida todo se paga. Una película que es un hibrido entre un thriller psicológico y un terror lleno de sangre e imágenes poco amigables.

But this hand is not just anything, it is one that works as a bridge to invoke and communicate with the dead. As it almost always happens in this kind of stories, once a door is opened, two things happen: either any number of spirits enter this plane or the door is almost impossible to close again; here both happen. From here on this group of young people, especially Mia since at some point she manages to communicate with her dead mother, will have to find a way to undo all those invocations they made without having any idea of the danger that this would bring later. And in the end, in life everything is paid for. A film that is a hybrid between a psychological thriller and a horror full of blood and unfriendly images.

Cuando buscaron armar y darle forma a la historia no se comieron mucho la cabeza, nada más genérico que un montón de chamos sin tener nada que hacer que se ponen a jugar a ser Dios sin medir consecuencia alguna, más o menos lo que fue la adolescencia de muchos de nosotros la verdad. Lo que digo es que la trama me pareció super lineal y sin especio a algo que pueda sorprender o ser inesperado, hasta me atrevería a decir que me falto mucho contexto con varias cosas. La protagonista no es Mia, es la mano y por tanto hubiese estado mejor una ligera historia de su origen, no me sirve un chisme que va de boca en boca, quiero algo que lleve a la gente a temerle realmente y eso no existe. Ya se sabe que va a haber una secuela por lo que a lo mejor tocarán este aspecto allí pero de igual forma, mucha profundidad no hay en este film.

When they tried to put together and shape the story, they didn't really think much of it, nothing more generic than a bunch of kids with nothing to do who start playing God without measuring any consequences, more or less what was the adolescence of many of us, really. What I'm saying is that the plot seemed to me super linear and with no room for anything that could surprise or be unexpected, I would even dare to say that it lacked a lot of context with several things. The protagonist is not Mia, she is the hand and therefore it would have been better to have a light story of her origin, I don't need a gossip that goes from mouth to mouth, I want something that leads people to really fear her and that doesn't exist. It is already known that there is going to be a sequel so maybe they will touch this aspect there but anyway, there is not much depth in this film.

Unos dirán que eso no hace falta porque el fin máximo de este tipo de películas es entretener a punta de sustos y bueno tienen un punto pero siempre va a ser necesario más contexto, así un mínimo. Hablando de sustos, definitivamente este no es un film en donde los "jump scare" se hacen presente, no los hay; todo va más en la dirección del suspenso, en eso que se esconde en las sombras, esa mano que te toca el hombro, el espectro que aparece en un espejo o en tus sueños o la voz que te susurra al oído. Ese es el terror que vivirán. En lo personal a mi me parece muy predecible eso, supongo que llega un punto en que casi nada ya me sorprende. Pero ojo, esto no es un problema de la película, soy yo; el film lo hace todo para que vivas una buena experiencia de terror.

Some will say that this is not necessary because the ultimate goal of this type of film is to entertain with scares, and well, they have a point, but more context will always be necessary, so a minimum. Speaking of scares, this is definitely not a film where "jump scares" are present, there are none; everything goes more in the direction of suspense, in that thing that hides in the shadows, that hand that touches your shoulder, the specter that appears in a mirror or in your dreams or the voice that whispers in your ear. That is the terror you will experience. Personally I find it very predictable, I guess there comes a point where almost nothing surprises me anymore. But be careful, this is not a problem of the film, it's me; the film does everything to make you live a good horror experience.

Hay sangre? - si hay. Hay unas escenas que estuvieron muy bien hechas, en especial las que protagoniza el niño que ven arriba, creo que es lo mejor de la película sinceramente. Recuerdo verlas y llegar a sentir algo a lo interno raro, es decir "ok, eso estuvo fuerte" pero no a nivel de susto sino por lo gráfico y explicito. Muy probablemente tu que me lees si eres una persona sensible a estas escenas te llegues a retorcer un poco en la silla o cama, eso es sinónimo de que el film hizo bien el trabajo. Como ya dije, es una producción de A24, quienes son unos maestros del genero, films como Hereditary, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, son algunos de sus creaciones. Al saber esto honestamente esperaba un poco más, no es en ningún momento una película mala pero para mi no llega a ser extraordinaria ni espeluznante como he leído por ahí.

Is there blood? - Yes there is. There are some scenes that were very well done, especially those starring the boy you see above, I think it's the best of the movie honestly. I remember watching them and feeling something weird inside, I mean "ok, that was strong" but not at a scary level but because of the graphic and explicitness. Most probably you who read me, if you are a sensitive person to these scenes, you might squirm a little in your chair or bed, that's a synonym that the film did the job well. As I said, it is an A24 production, who are masters of the genre, films like Hereditary, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, are some of their creations. Knowing this I honestly expected a bit more, it's not at any point a bad movie but for me it doesn't get to be extraordinary or creepy as I've read out there.

Mia, en este caso Sophie Wilde creo que hizo una actuación decente, todo lo que se le exigió lo entregó bien. Cuando tuvo que transmitir terror, miedo, estar poseída, siempre se le vio cómoda, es muy fácil que todo se vea forzado pero afortunadamente no fue el caso. Todos los demás son meros personajes secundarios que no me aportaron nada interesante más allá de ser los amigos de Mia con los que se aventuraba a llamar a los espíritus. No se porque pero es una película rara, siento que tenía que conectar más con algunos de ellos pero no lo hice, el film no me llevó a ese lugar. Aún así tampoco hay nada de que quejarse, todo es líneas generales es promedio.

Mia, in this case Sophie Wilde I think she gave a decent performance, everything that was required of her she delivered well. When she had to convey terror, fear, being possessed, she always looked comfortable, it is very easy for everything to look forced but fortunately this was not the case. All the others are mere supporting characters who didn't add anything interesting to me beyond being Mia's friends with whom she ventured out to call the spirits. I don't know why but it's a weird movie, I feel like I needed to connect more with some of them but I didn't, the film didn't take me to that place. Still there's nothing to complain about either, everything is average overall.

7/10, soy muy critico con el terror y en esta oportunidad aspiraba a algo más. La película no es un fiasco, lejos de serlo, pero no me cautivó, he visto mejores este año. Es novedosa, eso si, hacer de una mano lo mismo que hace una ouija no lo había visto nunca por lo que creo que si merece una oportunidad de que la vean, se que van a pasar un buen rato. Dura hora y media, tiempo perfecto para un film. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

7/10, I'm very critical with horror and this time I was looking for something more. The film is not a fiasco, far from it, but it didn't captivate me, I've seen better this year. It is novel, yes, to do with one hand the same thing that a Ouija board does, I had never seen it before, so I think it deserves a chance to be seen, I know you will have a good time.
