I feel like anime in cinema is still somewhat underrated, despite the fact that some great films have managed to gross the most money ever. I bring this up because the latest Kimetsu no Yaiba film, Infinity Castle, recently became the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing over $600 million. This isn't a conservative figure, considering we're talking about an anime, and I'm also sure this represents a huge blow for directors and film personalities in Hollywood, seeing how some "cartoons" can compete perfectly with a traditional film. But what other films have been talked about in cinema?

El anime en el cine siento que aún está siendo un poco subestimado a pesar de que han sido grandes películas las que ha logrado recaudar las mayores ganancias nunca vistas. Traigo esta conversación a la mesa porque recientemente el último film de Kimetsu no Yaiba, el Castillo Infinito se acaba de convertir en la película con mayor ingresos de toda la historia, logrando recaudar más de 600 millones de dólares. Esta no es una cifra nada conservadora teniendo en cuenta que estamos hablando de un anime y que también estoy seguro que para los directores y personalidades del cine en Hollywood esto representa un duro golpe al ver como unos "dibujitos" pueden pelear perfectamente con un film tradicional. Pero, cuáles han sido las otras películas que han dado de qué hablar en el cine?

The great director Makoto Shinkai has at least a couple of films at the top of his game, and I'd say his ability to tell stories and bring them to life is unique in this world. Suzume was released back in 2022, and the truth is, it was a resounding success because it connects with some of the things Japan has come to live with. Briefly, this plot features a young woman named Suzume who meets a young man, and together they begin to close supernatural doors that threaten to cause natural disasters throughout the country. On that journey, she also has to overcome many things in her life and heal many emotional wounds. It's a film with a very emotional touch. Always combining romance with fantasy, Shimkai's formula never fails, and it touches on sensitive topics such as the earthquake tragedies that have occurred in Japan.

El gran director Makoto Shinkai tiene por lo menos un par de películas en lo más alto y es que su capacidad para contar historias y animarlas diría yo que es única en este mundo. Suzume vio la luz por allá en el 2022 y la verdad es que fue éxito rotundo porque logra conectar con algunas cosas con las que Japón ha llegado a vivir. Brevemente les comento que esta trama cuenta con una joven llamada Suzume que conoce a un joven y que juntos comienzan a cerrar puertas sobrenaturales ya que estas amenazan con ocasionar desastres naturales en todo el país. En ese viaje a ella también le toca como que ir superando muchas cosas en su vida e ir sanando muchas heridas emocionales, es una película con un toque bien emotivo. Siempre combinando el romance con la fantasía, la fórmula de Shimkai no falla además de que toca temas sensibles como las tragedias con terremotos ocurridos en Japón.

What can be said about Spirited Away that isn't already known? Two things happen with this film. First, it won an Oscar, and second, it was Miyazaki's first major success; it was the film that catapulted him. That a Studio Ghibli story managed to gross almost $400 million back in 2001 is an impressive feat. As you well know, the plot revolves around Chihiro, this girl/teenager who must live with supernatural entities in order to save her parents, who have been turned into pigs. Here begins a truly magical journey for her. This is easily Studio Ghibli's best film; the magic and sensitivity with which it addresses themes like maturity and the weight of bearing a great responsibility is very special. This film must be seen from time to time; it's well worth it.

Que decir del Viaje de Chihiro y que no se sepa. Pasa dos cosas con este film. Lo primero es que ganó un Oscar y lo segundo es que fue el primer gran éxito de Miyazaki, fue la película que lo catapultó. Que una historia del Studio Ghibli haya sido capaz de recaudar casi 400 millones por allá en el 2001 es una hazaña impresionante. Como bien saben la trama habla de Chihiro, esta niña/adolescente que le toca vivir con entidades sobrenaturales para poder salvar a sus padres que se convirtieron en cerdos. Acá comienza para ella un viaje verdaderamente mágico. Fácilmente esta película es la mejor del Studio Ghibli, la magia y la sensibilidad con la que aborda temas como la madurez y el peso de tener una gran responsabilidad es muy especial. Este film hay que verlo de vez en cuando, merece mucho la pena.

Before Suzume, Shinkai had already done something unthinkable: surpass $400 million, and he did it with a film that is visually one of the most incredible you'll ever see. This film was released in 2016 and was truly a worldwide sensation. It tells the story of Mitsuha and Taki, a pair of young people who, out of nowhere and in a very mysterious way, begin to swap bodies. This strange phenomenon makes them connect in a very deep way even though they don't know each other. Emotionally speaking, they reach very deep levels, to the point that little by little they discover what's happening until they reach the absolute truth. This director's formula remains unchanged, always combining romance with some other element of fantasy or fiction, in this case, time travel. The film is certainly impressive. I would highly recommend Shinkai's films to anyone who wants to watch some anime and understand why this world is so top-notch.

Previo a Suzume ya Shinkai había hecho algo impensable, sobrepasar los 400 millones y lo hizo con una película que visualmente es de las más increíbles que alguien puede ver. Esto se estrenó en el 2016 y la verdad es que fue toda una sensación a nivel mundial. Nos habla de Mitsuha y Taki, par de jóvenes que de la nada y de forma muy misteriosa empiezan a intercambiar cuerpos. Este fenómeno extraño los hace conectar de una manera muy profunda a pesar de que no se conocen. Emocionalmente hablando llegan a niveles muy profundos al punto que poco a poco van descubriendo lo que va pasando hasta que llegan a la verdad absoluta. La fórmula de este director no cambia ya que siempre va de la mano con el romance y algún otro elemento de fantasía o ficción, en este caso los viajes en el tiempo. Ciertamente la película es impresionante, a todo aquel que quiera ver algo de anime y entender porque este mundo es tan top pues los films de Shinkai estaría bien recomendarlos.

- Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train (507MM)

The great Kyōjurō Rengoku arc held the title of the highest-grossing film until recently, until Infinity Castle, from the same family, came along to dethrone it. For those who don't understand the resentment people can have towards Akaza or the empathy he earned with the last film despite everything he did here, they should sit down and watch this masterpiece. I think it's not necessary to explain what this film means; I can personally say that I cried watching this; it's one of the most emotional and sad endings anyone can see, and as always, Ufotable's animation is at levels that very few can reach. It was unthinkable that a film would surpass 500 million but this one did it without breaking a sweat, as did the Infinity Castle reaching more than 600. The conclusion of this is that Kimetsu no Yaiba is in another galaxy, currently not even 5 years ago (2020) when this one came out it has no competition, we will have to see how much Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc collects, which by the way is having brutal numbers. These were the 5 highest grossing anime movies in history!

El arco del gran Kyōjurō Rengoku ostentaba hasta hace nada el título de la película con mayores y mejores ingresos hasta que llegó el Castillo Infinito, de la misma familia, a destronarla. Para aquellos que no entienden el rencor que la gente le puede tener a Akaza o la empatía que se ganó con la última película a pesar de todo lo que hizo acá pues deberían de sentarse a ver esta obra maestra. Creo que no hace falta explicar lo que esta película significa, personalmente puede decir que lloré viendo esto, es de los finales más emocionales y tristes que alguien puede ver además de que como siempre la animación de Ufotable está en niveles que muy pocos pueden llegar. Era impensable que una película sobrepasara los 500 millones pero esta lo hizo sin despeinarse, como lo hizo la del Castillo Infinito llegando a los más de 600. La conclusión de esto es que Kimetsu no Yaiba está en otra galaxia, actualmente ni hace 5 años (2020) cuando salió esta no tiene competencia, habrá que ver cuánto recauda Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc que por cierto está teniendo unos números brutales. Estas fueron las 5 películas más taquilleras de anime de la historia!

De todas de esta lista, la que más me encantó ver fue sin duda alguna Spirited Away. Fue literalmente un BOOM en aquel entonces, no teníamos nada con ese nivel de calidad audiovisual, fluidez y estilo tan vivo y surrealista que es normal que hasta se llevaran un Oscar en aquel entonces. Creo que, al igual que hizo Akira en su momento en los 80s, esta película de Studios Ghibli consiguió otra gran ola de crecimiento en la industria del anime fuera de asia y oriente.
