One of the movies I'd been meaning to watch was this one, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. Having secrets, and them being a part of who we are, is something I think is normal. Sharing them with the person you plan to spend the rest of your life with has to be a well-thought-out decision based on the trust you have in them. But what happens when this "story" that decides to come to light ends up being more complex than expected, and then processing it becomes extremely difficult? - well, that's what today's film is about. Everyone has secrets; do you think they should be shared with your future life partner?
Una de las películas que se me había quedado rezagada había sido esta, la protagonizada por Zendaya y Robert Pattinson. Tener secretos y que estos sean parte de cada quien es algo que yo creo es normal. Contarlos a la persona con la que planeas pasar el resto de tu vida tiene que ser una decisión bien pensada fundada en la confianza que le tengas al otro. Pero que pasa cuando esta "anécdota" que decide salir a la luz termina siendo más densa de lo esperado y entonces digerirla se hace sumamente complicado? - pues de eso se trata el film de hoy. Todo el mundo tiene secretos, creen ustedes que deberían de contarse a la futura compañera o compañero de vida?
Emma and Charlie are getting married. They're the perfect couple. They met in a funny, awkward way, and it was then that they realized there was something between them. They spent two years together, and everything seemed perfect until they decided to take the plunge and get married. Wedding planning begins, guided by their best man and maid of honor, who are close friends. They're so excited about everything: the dancing, the flowers, the photos, the food, the vows; everything was ideal until it simply wasn't. One night, while deciding on the menu, the four of them, over drinks, decide to answer this question: What's the worst thing you've ever done? The revelations were definitely not what they expected.
Emma y Charlie se van a casar. Son la pareja perfecta, ellos se conocieron de una forma graciosa y tosca y fue en ese momento cuando se dieron cuenta que había algo entre los dos. Tuvieron dos años juntos en donde todo funcionaba hasta que decidieron dar el paso y casarse. Comienza la planeación de la boda de la mano de los padrinos, grandes amigos de ellos; mucha ilusión por todo aquello: el baile, las flores, las fotos, la comida, la lectura de votos; todo era ideal hasta que simplemente dejó de serlo. Una noche, justamente decidiendo cual sería el menú, los cuatro, entre copas, deciden responder a esto: ¿qué es lo peor que has hecho en tu vida? - las revelaciones definitivamente no fueron las esperadas.
I'm not going to reveal what everyone said, but you should know that it was things that profoundly affected their relationship. From that night on, nothing was the same. The image they had of each other vanished, and a crisis of trust engulfed their relationship to the point where they began to suffer greatly. Things also suffered with the godparents, and we see cracks in their relationship as well. Basically, the plot revolves around how, despite everything, they try to move on because they understand that it happened a long time ago and people can change. The thing is, this process is extremely difficult for one of them, so the breakup is imminent. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this film so much because behind all the drama—and I mean that literally—there's a really cool and interesting dark comedy that makes everything that happens feel surreal.
Desde acá no voy a revelar que dijo cada quien pero si tienen que saber que fueron cosas que trastocaron profundamente la relación. A partir de esa noche nada fue igual, aquella imagen que se tenían uno del otro desapareció, una crisis de confianza inunda la relación al punto de que comienzan a pasarla realmente mal. Con los padrinos la cosa también sufre consecuencias y por eso lado igualmente vemos grietas. Basicamente la trama es ver como a pesar de todo ellos tratan de seguir adelante porque entienden que aquello pasó hace mucho tiempo y la gente puede cambiar; la cosa es que ese ejercicio es sumamente complicado para uno de ellos por lo que el quiebre es inminente. La verdad no esperaba disfrutar tanto este film porque detrás de todo el drama, nunca mejor dicho, hay una comedia negra bien cool e interesante que hace que todo lo que pase termine siendo surrealista.
This film shows us that idealizing people is never the solution to anything. It's one thing to feel admiration and love for someone, but quite another when those feelings blind you to the other layers that might be hidden beneath the surface. It also shows us that one should be with a person despite their flaws; nobody is perfect, especially if those behaviors have been left behind to become a better person. Forgiveness and acceptance are vital. Charlie and Emma will learn all this the hard way. The comedy makes you laugh, but watching this relationship slowly spiral out of control, and seeing how each attempt to fix things only makes things worse, is the film's true hook.
Esta película nos muestra que idealizar a las personas nunca es la solución a nada. Una cosa es sentir admiración y amor por una persona pero otra es cuando esos sentimientos no dejan ver las otras capas que puedan haber por allí escondidas. Nos muestra también a que uno debería de estar con una persona a pesar de sus defectos, nadie es perfecto y más si esas conductas fueron dejadas atrás para convertirse en una mejor persona. El perdón y la aceptación son vitales. Todo esto Charlie y Emma lo van a entender por las malas. La comedia hace que uno se ría pero ver como está relación poco a poco va cayendo por un precipicio y que por cada intento de enmendar las cosas todo termine más hundido es el verdadero gancho del film.
Both Zendaya and Pattinson are incredibly talented actors; they're a joy to watch because, besides being good, they have amazing chemistry. I think Robert's performance is slightly better; he's the most broken, affected, and lost character here, and he conveys all of that perfectly. It's a very well-made film. I liked the flashbacks they used to complement the story and help us understand Emma's personality. That technique is really cool because it adds depth and necessary context. There are laughs, tension, fights, surrealism, and love; this movie has it all, and it's produced by the geniuses at A24. Highly recommended. I didn't have high hopes for it, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise. I've included the trailer below.
Tanto Zendaya como Pattinson son actores de altísima calidad, se disfruta mucho verlos actuar porque además de que son buenos tienen mucha química entre ellos. Creo que lo de Robert es ligeramente mejor, él es el más roto, afectado y perdido acá y todo eso lo logra transmitir a la perfección. Es un film muy bien hecho, me gustaron los flashbacks que usaron para complementar la historia y así entender la personalidad en este caso de Emma. Ese recurso es muy cool porque da profundidad y contexto necesario. Hay risas, tensión, hay peleas, hay surrealismo, amor; lo tiene todo está película además de que es algo producido por la gente de A24, unos genios. Super recomendada. No le tenía mucha fe y terminó siendo una grata sorpresa. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

Está es una película que nunca pensé que me gustaría porque los actores no son mis favoritos y juntos no me parecía. Pero, me dió una bofetada, tiene una historia diferente que te hace pensar en la doble moral de las personas. Me gustó que fue algo nuevo que en este momento no puedo comparar con nada más.
