What am I doing watching a movie about teenagers obsessed with who they’re kissing and the Valentine’s Day dance? Honestly, I have no idea. The thing is, while looking for something to watch, I stumbled upon this recent film that listed "slasher" among its genres—and whenever I see a movie described that way, it’s hard for me not to sit down and watch it. The slasher genre can be associated with many things: horror, suspense, violence, gore, spectacular kills, and so on. So, does this story deliver on all those fronts? Yes, but not quite in the way I imagined. It’s not that it’s a bad movie; I just feel it isn't for me—it seems aimed at a different audience, probably a different generation. Still, I watched it, and I don't feel like I wasted my time, since I knew exactly where it was heading from the very first few minutes.

Que hago yo viendo una película de unos adolescentes pendientes de a quien besan y del baile del día de San Valentín? - pues no lo se la verdad. La cosa es que en esa busqueda de películas para ver me encontré con este film reciente el cual tenía dentro de sus géneros la increíble palabra "slasher" y es que cuando leo que una película va por ese camino es difícil que no me siente a verla. El Slasher puede estar asociado a muchas cosas, el terror, el suspenso, la violencia, sangre, muertes llamativas, etc. Ahora, todo se cumple en esta historia? - si pero no de la forma en la que me lo imaginaba. No es una película, solo siento que no es para mi, creo que va dirigida a otra audiencia, probablemente a otra generación. Igual la vi y tampoco es que perdí mi tiempo porque desde los primeros minutos ya uno sabía el camino que iba a tomar.

We find ourselves in an average American town, home to a typical high school populated by the same variety of students found in countless similar stories. Among them is Laurel (Mckenna Grace), who—along with her friend Poppy—is trying to decide how and when she should have her first kiss. While this is on their minds, the class goes on a field trip to a nearby forest, an outing that does not end well. An accident occurs, and what was supposed to be a cool, relaxed day turns into a fatal tragedy. Lives are lost and others are left injured—both physically and mentally—including Laurel, who is never the same again. The psychological trauma inflicted by the experience is so profound that, without seeking or even realizing it, she acquires a rather strange and sinister "ability."

Estamos en el pueblo promedio de los Estados Unidos en donde está el colegio/preparatoria promedio con toda la variedad de estudiantes conocidos en todas las historias similares. Entre ellos está Laurel (Mckenna Grace) quien junto a su amiga Poppy están decidiendo como y cuando debería ser el primer beso de Laurel. Mientras tienen eso en mente la clase va a una excursión en un bosque cercano la cual no termina del todo bien. Ocurre un accidente y lo que se suponía iba a ser un día cool y tranquilo termina convirtiéndose en una tragedia fatal. Mueren personas y otros quedan heridos, tanto física como mentalmente siendo una de ellas Laurel, quien después de aquello no vuelve a ser la misma. Es tal el trauma psicológico que le generó aquella experiencia que sin saberlo y pedirlo termina adquiriendo una "habilidad" bastante extraña y perversa.

She became a very fatalistic person; add to that her obsession with her first kiss, and the "curse" she acquired was seeing people die the moment she kissed them. This began to cause Laurel great distress, as her visions clearly showed her friends dying at the hands of a mysterious killer. Knowing this—and unable to confide in anyone without being dismissed as crazy—she embarks on a race against time to discover the person behind the mask. As I mentioned, this movie is essentially a slasher, so I expected a bloodbath and a constant stream of deaths; that wasn't the case. There are deaths, certainly, but not enough to truly classify the film within that horror subgenre. In fact, I wouldn't even call it "horror"; it is more of a suspense story—a rather naive teen thriller.

Ella se convirtió en una persona muy fatalista, si a eso le sumamos su obsesión por el primer beso pues la "maldición" que adquirió fue ver como moría la gente con solo besarlas. Eso a Laurel le comenzó a generar mucha angustia porque en esas visiones claramente veía que sus amigos iban a morir en manos de un asesino misterioso. Sabiendo aquello y sin poder hablar y compartirlo con nadie porque la toman de loca decide emprender una carrera casi que contrarreloj para descubrir quien es la persona que está detrás de aquella máscara. Como había dicho esta película en esencia es un slasher por lo que esperaba un festival de muertes y sangre por doquier; no fue así. Si hay muertes pero con el nivel como para catalogar a este film con este subgénero del terror. Es más, creería que tampoco se le pudiera llamar "terror", es más bien como una historia de suspenso, un thriller muy ingenuo de adolescentes.

I knew what I was getting into just by watching the first few minutes: best friends talking about the boys they like, the field trip where the whole class cracks the usual jokes (one of which leads to the accident), and then piecing the puzzle together to unmask the killer. I liked that they made it interesting by framing the plot like a police investigation—even though there aren't actually any cops involved. Laurel builds the case by hunting for clues and ruling people out; naturally, to figure out what’s going on, she has to kiss almost everyone along the way. That specific detail struck me as silly, though perhaps a younger viewer would find it fun. It’s almost like a punishment for her: she wanted her first kiss so badly that she ended up kissing half the class. The plot is incredibly basic, but I have to admit there’s an interesting twist—it caught me off guard, at least, and that counts for something.

Sabía en lo que me metía con tan solo ver los primeros minutos, las mejores amigas hablando del muchacho que les gusta; la expedición y todos los de la clases haciendo las típicas bromas (por una de ellas es que ocurre el accidente) y después el armado del rompecabezas para descifrar al asesino. Me gustó que por lo menos lo hicieron interesante en el sentido de que llevaron la trama como una investigación policial, aunque de policía no tiene nada. Laurel armó el caso y fue buscando pistas, descartando personas, porque claro, para saber que iba a pasar tuvo que besar a casi todo el mundo para así ir avanzando. Este detalle es que lo que me pareció tonto, a lo mejor para alguien más joven si es algo divertido. Es como una especie de castigo para ella, tanto quería dar su primer beso que terminó besando a media clase. La trama es increíblemente básica pero confieso que tiene un plot twist interesante, por lo menos me sorprendió y eso ya es algo.

The scenes meant to deliver suspense and "horror" are very superficial; there is no sense of urgency, suffering, or fear. I am referring specifically to the moments when the killer starts striking—they lack impact, there is no blood, and nothing is graphic. It is hard to understand why this is labeled a slasher film—presumably just to boost sales. The plot has its merits, but nothing more. As for the acting, the focus is really on Mckenna Grace; as the lead, she carries the weight of the entire film, and her performance is solid enough given the movie's standards. It is a plot that doesn't demand much, though it could have been made more interesting—especially regarding the horror elements. If you enjoy romance stories with touches of suspense, murder, and death, then this is undoubtedly for you. That is the specific audience I would recommend it to. It runs for an hour and a half. Las escenas de más suspenso y "terror" son muy superficiales, no hay urgencia, sufrimiento ni miedo. Con esto me refiero a las que involucra al asesino cuando comienza a matar, no tienen impacto, no hay sangre, no es explicita; no se entiende como llaman a esto un slasher, para vender más supongo. La trama tiene sus cosas buenas pero sin más. La actuaciones para mi solo se entran en lo que hace Mckenna Grace ya que ella es la protagonista principal y sobre ella está el peso de todo el film: aceptable para los estándares de la película. Es una trama a la que no hay que pedirle mucho pero que si pudieron haberla hecho más interesante, sobretodo con el tema del terror. Si eres una persona que le gusta este tipo de historias de amor/romance con sus toques de suspenso, asesinatos y muertes pues sin dudas será para ti. Solo a esas personas se las recomiendo.
