Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

Hello friends, good vibes to all.

I think we are all familiar with this famous nun that for about ten years has been appearing on people's screens ever since the Conjuring saga aired. The Warren movies were the ones that first introduced us to this demon, one that was or is a floating irony because it has the guts to take the form of a nun, an image that associated with the purest and most Catholic things there can be. It was such a success that in 2018 a film dedicated to her came out, about her beginnings, her origins and not satisfied with that, which for me had been more than enough, this year the second part or continuation of that story came out.

Nun II follows the path of Valak, this demon who is said to be one of the leaders of hell. The bet from what I saw is to follow the pattern of what had been the first installment, how this "nun" continued to terrorize half of Europe back in the 50's. As a horror film I think it fulfills its mission, it has a lot of filler for me, but the main mission which is merely to entertain the board without problems, in fact, I would say it's a little better than the first. It has its flaws, mostly at the level of story structure and one or another visual effect out there but in the end you can see it. But then, is this nun still scary? - Let's go and talk a little bit about this new film.

First of all I recommend that if you have not seen the first one, go and see it, it is not strictly necessary but it will put your feet on the ground and you will understand everything a little better. As I already told you this is the continuation of the events of that film, we are set in France in 1956, four years after Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) has given battle and met Valak for the first time in Romania. The thing is that it seems that this demon has not been completely defeated since in a French town it was learned of the death of a priest in strange circumstances. This caused them to call Sister Irene back to investigate what is going on since everything is very similar to what happened in the Romanian abbey.

In parallel, in a boarding school in the same France, strange things seem to be happening, that place keeps a secret that will soon be discovered. So it is here that Irene travels with an assistant to try to solve everything while Valak continues to do his thing. Once she arrives in France, the second encounter will take place and once again good versus evil will face each other to see who has the final word. As you can see the plot is what it is, a little more of the same as in the first one, the detail is that in this one there is a stronger purpose on the part of this demon. We will continue to see the typical scares, weird situations, strange sounds, visions and the famous jumpscare, which there are, but I don't know if they are as effective at this point.

I want to start with the question in the title, is this pale nun still scary to look at? - It depends on how scary you are as a person, but personally my answer is no. We have seen so much of her, the way she scares, the way she appears, the way she acts, that there is no room for her anymore. We have seen so much of her, the way she scares, the way she appears, the way she acts, that there is no room for surprise anymore, everything around her ends up being incredibly predictable. It's scary because the truth is that the makeup and CGI behind it makes her look extremely ugly to the point of discomfort. I'm not calling Bonnie Aarons ugly but you get my point. This character has been so much juiced to the point that they "burned" it, it went from being something that really imparted terror to being a product that tires because it always "scares" in the same way: it seems at the end of a room, photo or wall and jumps on you, that's it, that's it, no more.

Talking now about the film as such and despite all that has been said, I must say that it is not as bad as I thought. Everything related to photography, lighting, setting, etc, is very well done, even the performances. The jump scare is present, there are several of them, the suspenseful moments are also worth it, that tension in the atmosphere by the feeling that something is going to happen, however predictable it is, are things that are grateful to be there. The horror is there, all the cliché elements that surround it make the film come out slightly unscathed from that criticism, it is not a 10 but I think it can be classified as a horror film. But not everything is good, in fact there are a couple of things that for me left much to be desired.

One of them has to do with the CGI I talked about before, although it is true that with the Nun it doesn't look so bad, in this film another creature appears which is quite pitiful, to the point that beyond being scary what it gives is laughter. It's a pity because it takes away from the intensity of the experience and makes it impossible to take seriously the scenes where this thing appears on the screen. I don't understand how they include something like this but well. And the second thing is that the story is flat to the max, personally I would have liked to know more about Valak, his true origins, who he really is, this would have been brutal but they decided not to do it. We don't see a direct relationship with the Warrens either, nothing to make us think that this is what is coming, knowing that these films are sequels. Many missed opportunities to have done something really better than what was shown. With this it lost a lot of points for me.

Here Sister Irene is amazing, Taissa's performance is spectacular throughout the film but this stands out when she directly confronts Valak, the intensity she inflicts on the performance is crazy stuff. It had already happened in the first film and it happened again, she is one of the best in this pair of movies. Not much else to say, Debra (Storm Redi) is the nun who accompanies Irene and who for me was a totally lost character, for her to have a little more weight would have been great but in the end she was just there as an appendage to Irene. And well Bonnie Aarons seems to have mimicked the nun, she's becoming more and more natural.

This one gets a 6.5/10. It delivers but that's as far as it goes. Those things I mentioned that were missing made the film lose depth and seriousness. But in the end if you want to see something to take advantage of the spooky season this film is fine, without being a big deal it entertains which is the important thing. I leave the trailer below.

Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.

This nun character was a good one back when there was still the mystery of what or who she was in the conjuring. Back then, the thought of her was very scary especially considering the blasphemy attribute and how serious of a sin that is in catholicism. Now, that mystery is gone and we've basically seen enough of her. It just goes to show that the more you get to know something the less scary it becomes.

I saw the first movie and I did not not like it. On that note, I am not sure I will see this one. I know that a couple of people are excited about it but I don't share in that. I'm glad that you enjoyed it a little bit.

This movie, for me, is a little better than the first one, but only a little. Despite that it is nothing more than a somewhat meaningless continuation of what was seen in the first installment. And yes, this character is becoming more and more predictable and known so his movements and actions are the least scary. It's not a terrible film, but it's a pretty weak one.

avatar

o saw it and i could not say it is a bad movie and i do like the story conclusion about the french and all that but i was really hoping it to be a lot more scary, i think not knowing the danger was more thrilling...

Exactly, the movie is not all bad but it lacked context. In particular I would have liked to know more about the demon as such but they didn't, unless there is a third part and we don't know it. It's not scary, but the suspense and everything surrounding the scenes is well done.
