(ESP-ENG) The Pale Blue Eye, one crime and many mysteries!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
We keep coming out of those "straggler" films that I have yet to see and this time it was the turn of Christian Bale's latest, one of the most versatile and committed actors in the industry. I say this because if you are a fan of his, you know the radical physical changes that Bale is exposed to just to make the film have much more quality than it would have if it had him acting. The Pale Blue Eye is a story where the physical doesn't matter so much but the acting does, I tell you it's not the best I've seen Bale do but it's not something that goes unnoticed, I feel that we are facing a pretty average film if I'm honest.
This is a story full of mysteries, as I say in the title, but it is also one where suspense, the effect of a psychological thriller and the grace of a plot where the detective and intrigue are the flag of entertainment and what anchors the viewers to not want to pass by or just hit the pause button and not watch it anymore. I have to say that this kind of plots are good and even more when they are set in past times where everything was darker and there was a more disturbing aura; although it may seem a lie a room lit with candles will never be the same as one with neon lights so yes, this kind of stories to me personally call my attention. Let's not waste any more time and let's talk a little bit about what is going on with this mysterious crime.
We begin with Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) who is or was a renowned police detective and now enjoys his retirement away from it all in his small house. Landor has a reputation, his name is respected and that is why the highest authorities of the military academy of West Point in New York decide to contact him to solve an event that is making the cadets and others nervous, a possible suicide/murder occurred in the vicinity of the academy. But then what is the mystery behind it all? - Well, they not only found the body but also very clear evidence that the corpse was desecrated.
It is from this moment when the plot begins to move, is when we see Landor doing what he does best, looking for answers and all thanks to his great intelligence, wit and the help of another cadet very interested in the case, a certain Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling). The roads from here on will be full of intrigue and many questions and few answers that will demand a little patience as it is possible that in several passages of the film this one falls into a rut not necessarily boring but thick. This happens because the context demands it, this is a story taken from a work by Louis Bayard that touches on the beginnings of the famous poet so that dramatic essence when it comes to expressing himself and building relationships is something that is very present.
We fall back into the usual mistake, the one that insists on cataloging a film as a horror film just because it has a couple of violent deaths and because in the air there is an uncertainty that revolves around the mystery of the murderer who is on the loose and that threatens the tranquility of all and even us viewers. What this does is to damage the image of a genre that in itself is already quite touched by the failed attempts of wanting to make a good production and not getting it, if we add to that these intentions of wanting to deceive people with something that is not logical that people increasingly feel more aversion and predisposition towards horror, they want to see it as something very cliché when it should not be, for me it should be the most exclusive genre of all because of how complicated it is to make something of quality.
And no, this is not a horror movie. It is a decent suspense that goes hand in hand with a thriller where mystery is king. The plot is one that invites us to solve that mystery, that puzzle made crime and that as the minutes go by seems to be closer to being solved. That expectation makes you never get bored, at least in my case it was like that, you are always trying to put the pieces together and tie the ends to reach the end of the maze even though in several occasions that missing piece is quite obvious. Because yes, many times you will believe that you have it all figured out, that all roads finally reach the destination and it is at that moment when the film surprises you and you realize that no, nothing is what it seems.
Two things I really liked about this film: the good plot twist it has in its development and the setting/photography it has. The first thing you don't expect, the truth is that you don't, if you are very perspicacious you might, but even so I doubt it very much. It was something that took me by surprise and when these are good and add something to the film it is worth praising them, I think that if that had not happened this film would have been one of the most regrettable I've seen. And the second thing is something positive to look at, a very simple but well cared production, lights, shadows, shots, tension scenes, all very basic but still does the job, the photography is very nice.
The characters. There are two, Bale in my opinion was good, I repeat again that it is not the role of his life but in the moments where the level of demand increased he looked calm and comfortable. I feel that he is a very serious actor and that these characters fit him like a glove, he is one who has a very strong emotional charge but seeks to hide in a shell to try to minimize what happens to him. The thing is that he uses that emptiness as an engine, hence his impetus. And Harry Melling as Poe is impressive, the casting here was very successful because the resemblance is incredible, another very good character, I feel that for many moments he was the main axis of this story. A smart guy, shrewd, meticulous but above all a better person. I really enjoyed this role, one of the best of the movie.
7.5/10. I liked the film, I think it has more good things than bad, but I didn't find it extraordinary or out of this world, it's one that will be forgotten sooner rather than later, it's not transcendent. Do I recommend it? - Yes, without a doubt, it is very good to watch it at night and this sounds super cliché but it is so, the whole movie is made to be enjoyed in absolute darkness. It is available on Netflix and has a duration of approximately two hours. I leave the trailer for you to take a look.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!

I just saw it last weekend, it really is very well developing the mystery of the death of the soldiers but I would have liked that especially the ending was a little shorter. excellent recommendation
Indeed, mystery is everything in this film.
Beware of spoilers because there may be people who haven't seen it yet.
Thanks for the visit, greetings!

Many thanks to you for stopping by to comment.
And yes, the movie is very good, do not misunderstand what I say, Bale's performance is very top, as always and what really engages is the fact that it is a good thriller to pass the time, you will not get bored or regret.
