Actors like Eddie Murphy are those who seem like they'll never go out of style, or at least their comedy. The famous detective Foley returns to the big screen, this time on Prime Video, starring in a film known as "just another one of the bunch." I've always wondered why certain actors, who were once icons in certain genres, now make completely irrelevant films. Some say it's for the money, while others claim it's to stay relevant, or perhaps both. The Pickup is a parody of Ocean's Eleven, only with fewer people and a much simpler plot.

Actores como Eddie Murphy son esos que pareciera que nunca van a pasar de moda o por lo menos su comedia. El famoso detective Foley vuelve a la gran pantalla, esta vez en Prime Video, protagonizando una película de las que se conoce como "una más del montón". Siempre me he preguntado porque ciertos actores los cuales alguna vez fueron referentes en determinados géneros hoy en día hacen films totalmente irrelevantes, unos dicen que es por el dinero mientras otros aseguran que es para mantenerse vigentes o quizás por las dos cosas. The Pickup es una versión parodia de Ocean's Eleven solo que con menos gente y con un plan bastante más simple.

This is about two guys who work driving an armored truck that transports money and all sorts of valuables. Russell (Eddie Murphy) and Travis (Pete Davidson) are like water and oil; the generational difference is noticeable, but they still have to do the impossible to work together. Once en route in the middle of the highway, they are attacked by a group whose main objective is to take over the truck, but not precisely for what it contains. Zoe (Keke Palmer) is the leader of this group, whose motivation transcends everything since it goes beyond getting hold of the money they have their eye on.

Esto va de dos tipos que trabajan manejando un camión blindado el cual transporta dinero y todo tipo de cosas de valor. Russell (Eddie Murphy) y Travis (Pete Davidson) son como el agua y el aceite, la diferencia generacional se nota pero aún así tienen que hacer lo imposible para trabajar juntos. Una vez en ruta en medio de una carretera son asaltados por un grupo cuyo objetivo principal es apoderarse del camión pero no precisamente por lo que llevaba dentro. Zoe (Keke Palmer) es la líder de este grupo la cual tiene una motivación que trasciende todo ya que va más allá de lograr conseguir el dinero que tienen en la mira.

As you can imagine, you should already know where this is going. The plot of this film revolves around the two protagonists' life together, which gets worse and more chaotic by the minute, while at the same time they try to cooperate as best they can with the mugger to make the plan work. This is a comedy with action overtones; obviously, having someone like Murphy on screen is a guarantee that something will be funny, but it might not be enough. I've never found Pete Davidson to be solid as an actor; he's more of a comedian than anything else, so the "strong" comments and punchlines he can make in his interactions with Eddie are certainly funny. There are things that are funny, though, and we're not going to lie, but we're not talking about peak comedy, far from it.

Como imaginarán ya deben de saber por dónde va la cosa y es que la trama de esta película es la convivencia de los dos protagonistas la cual cada minuto que pasa es peor y más caótica mientras que en paralelo tratan de cooperar lo mejor posible con la asaltadora para que el plan termine de salir bien. Esto es una comedia con tintes de acción, obviamente tener a alguien como Murphy en pantalla es garantía de que algo dará risa pero puede que no sea suficiente. A Pete Davidson como actor nunca lo he visto solido, él es más un comediante que otra cosa por lo que "fuerte" son los comentarios y ganchos que puede decir en las interacciones con Eddie. Hay cosas que si dan risa, tampoco vamos a mentir pero no estamos hablando del peak de la comedia ni mucho menos.

The action is driven by a chase down an empty highway, which I found incredible. We didn't see a single car on that vast freeway, which, considering the United States, is hard to believe. The way it all unfolds is worthy of a comedy; the way they take out each member of this group of assailants is almost absurd, but it ends up being effective. Ultimately, in this type of film, that's an unwritten rule: even the most pure and hard-hitting action has to seem as "comic" as possible. Despite all this, the film isn't boring. It's not the best I've seen, but it's decent enough to pass the time after a day's work.

La acción viene dada gracias a una persecución en medio de carretera vacía, eso me pareció increíble, ni un solo carro vimos en aquella gran autopista cosa que para ser Estados Unidos es difícil de creer. El cómo se va desarrollando todo es digno de una comedia, la forma en como se van deshaciendo de cada miembro de este grupo de asaltantes cae casi en lo absurdo pero termina siendo efectivo. Al final en este tipo de película esa es una regla no escrita, hasta la acción más pura y dura tiene que parecer lo más "cómica" posible. A pesar de todo esto el film no aburre, no es lo mejor que he visto pero para pasar el rato después de un día de trabajo está decente.

Eva Longoria, Joe Anoa'i aka Roman Reings, and Marshawn Lynch are some of the personalities who appear in this film. A WWE wrestler and a former football player, that's the cast. Longoria makes a brief but stellar appearance, nothing relevant enough to measure his performance. In the end, we have a very average and forgettable film, but it's useful when you have nothing else to watch; it's the kind of movie to kill time. I give it 5/10. It lasts an hour and a half, and as I said, you can find it on Prime Video. I'll leave the trailer here.

Eva Longoria, Joe Anoa'i aka Roman Reings y Marshawn Lynch son algunas de las personalidades que aparecen en esta película. Un luchador de la WWE y un ex jugador de fútbol americano, ese es el cast. Longoria hace una aparición breve pero estelar, nada relevante como para medir su actuación. Al final tenemos un film muy promedio y super olvidable pero que sirve para cuando no tengas nada que ver, es el tipo de película para quemar el tiempo. Le doy 5/10. Dura una hora y media y como ya dije la pueden encontrar en Prime Video. Les dejo el trailer por acá.
