The Punisher es de esos personajes que creo que Marvel no ha logrado darle la continuidad que merece. Hace como 7 años sacaron una serie en Netflix hecha casi en su totalidad por Jon Bernthal la cual para mi fue increíble pero que decidieron cancelar. Con el estreno de Daredevil introdujeron al personaje un poco en la trama pero sin mucho peso y ahora la gente de Disney y de la mano del mismo Bernthal nos traen este especial de menos de una hora en donde convivimos con un Frank Castle abatido mentalmente por la conocida perdida de su familia y por la duda que crece en él de si vale la pena seguir con lo que ha estado haciendo, su rol de vigilante vengador.

The Punisher is one of those characters that I think Marvel hasn't given the continuity he deserves. About seven years ago, they released a Netflix series, almost entirely created by Jon Bernthal, which I thought was incredible, but they decided to cancel it. With the premiere of Daredevil, they introduced the character a little into the plot, but without much impact. Now, Disney, along with Bernthal himself, brings us this special of less than an hour, where we see a Frank Castle mentally broken by the well-known loss of his family and by the growing doubt within him about whether it's worth continuing what he's been doing, his role as a vengeful vigilante.

Creo, solo es una suposición, que este especial se ubica con el final de aquella serie del 2019 y la epoca cuando aparece en Daredevil (aún no se sabe si saldrá en Doomsday). Como les decía en este especial tenemos a Frank teniendo una crisis existencial después de haber eliminado a toda una familia perteneciente a la mafia italiana en Nueva York y relacionada con la muerte de su propia familia. Se sabe que Castle siempre ha sido un hombre atormentado por la muerte de su esposa e hijos, él nunca fue el mismo y es raíz de eso que nace "The Punisher". Con su vida sin un rumbo aparente y Nueva York hundida en la miseria en manos de criminales de todo tipo por la cabeza de Frank pasa la idea de no vivir más y es que la venganza parece no satisfacerle.

As I was saying, in this special, we see Frank having an existential crisis after eliminating an entire Italian mafia family in New York, a family connected to the death of his own. It's known that Castle has always been tormented by the death of his wife and children; he was never the same, and it's from this that "The Punisher" is born. With his life seemingly aimless and New York mired in misery at the hands of all kinds of criminals, the idea of ​​ending his life crosses Frank's mind, as revenge no longer seems to satisfy him.

Todo cambia cuando de la nada aparece Ma Gnucci, una de las archienemigas de The Punisher, simplemente a informarle que todos los criminales estarán detrás de él en retaliación por la muerte de su familia en manos de Castle. Obviamente el factor supervivencia se activa en él y veremos como uno a uno va aniquilando a los que se le crucen en su camino. Basicamente esto es el especial, una pequeña muestra violenta y sangrienta de lo que puede hacer The Punisher. La verdad es que para los que somos fanáticos del personaje que le dedicaran algo ya son buenas noticias, es verdad que si hubiese sido más tiempo hubiera sido una película prácticamente, la idea de hacerlo tipo "especial" no es para nada mala. Como comentaba esto no llega a los 50 minutos pero la intensidad está garantizada.

Everything changes when Ma Gnucci, one of The Punisher's arch-enemies, appears out of nowhere to inform him that all criminals will be after him in retaliation for the death of her family at Castle's hands. Obviously, his survival instinct kicks in, and we see him annihilate anyone who crosses his path, one by one. Basically, this is the special, a small, violent, and bloody sample of what The Punisher is capable of. The truth is, for those of us who are fans of the character, the fact that they dedicated something to him is already good news. It's true that if it had been longer, it would have been practically a movie, but the idea of ​​doing it as a "special" isn't bad at all. As I mentioned, it doesn't even reach 50 minutes, but the intensity is guaranteed.

La naturaleza de Frank es violenta por lo que todo lo que veremos serán golpes, disparos, huesos rotos, sangre, caídas y claro está, esa sensación de venganza que viene dada por un par de cosas que pasan en la corta trama. Bernthal como actor de acción es top, no creo que haya alguien más al que le quede este personaje como a él, se mimetiza mucho haciéndolo ver muy real (también porque es un buen actor). La mayoría de las escenas son hechas por él pero hay otra que no y es acá en donde la mayor critica a este especial y sobretodo a Marvel que ya es conocido por hacer estas burradas. El CGI. Hay una escena en donde Castle cae y se le ve cayendo obviamente y aterrizar, pues el CGI que usaron es tan malo para tapar la cara del doble que terminó pareciendo una caricatura de mal gusto.

Frank's nature is violent, so all we'll see are punches, gunshots, broken bones, blood, falls, and of course, that sense of revenge stemming from a couple of things that happen in the short plot. Bernthal is a top-notch action actor; I don't think anyone else could pull off this character as well as he does. He blends in so well, making it look incredibly real (also because he's a good actor). He does most of the stunts himself, but there's one he doesn't, and this is where the biggest criticism of this special, and especially of Marvel, which is already known for making these kinds of blunders, comes in. The CGI. There's a scene where Castle falls, and you can obviously see him falling and landing, but the CGI they used to cover the stunt double's face is so bad that it ended up looking like a tasteless caricature.

Que a ver, eres Marvel, no puedes hacer ese desastre de animación. Lamentablemente estamos acostumbrado a que esta gente haga estas cosas por lo que sorpresivo no fue. Esto no opaca lo entretenido y vistoso que termina siendo todo, los casi 50 minutos se pasan muy rápido. Le doy un 8/10, vale la pena verlo tanto por la actuación de Bernthal como por la increíble acción que hay. Está disponible en Disney+. Si son fanáticos de Marvel, de MCU y del personaje, se los recomiendo mucho. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

Look, you're Marvel, you can't make such a mess of the animation. Unfortunately, we're used to this kind of thing from them, so it wasn't exactly a surprise. That said, it doesn't detract from how entertaining and visually stunning the whole thing is; the almost 50 minutes fly by. I give it an 8/10.
