(ESP-ENG) Detained | A thriller full of intrigue - Movie Review!

As it is obvious there are films that are super unknown to everyone, films that only by searching and searching you can get them. Yesterday while deciding what to watch I stumbled upon this, a very intriguing story starring Abbie Cornish and Laz Alonso (the same from The Boys). I was looking forward to seeing something relatively short and that had some action and the answer to those requirements was Detained. I have to confess that I expected absolutely nothing from this movie, I had that feeling that what I was going to see would be terrible but no, in the end it turned out to be something more entertaining than I thought despite being a plot with very obvious errors.

Como es obvio hay películas super desconocidas por todos, films que solo buscando y buscando las puedes conseguir. Ayer mientras decidía que ver me topé con esto, una historia muy intrigante protagonizada por Abbie Cornish y Laz Alonso (el mismo de The Boys). Tenía ganas de ver algo relativamente corto y que tuviera algo de acción y la respuesta a esos requerimientos fue Detained. Tengo que confesar que no esperaba absolutamente nada de esta película, tenía esa sensación de que lo que iba a ver sería terrible pero no, al final resultó ser algo más entretenido de lo que pensaba a pesar de ser una trama con errores muy evidentes.

The story introduces us to Rebecca Kamen (Abbie Cornish), a woman who wakes up one morning in the interrogation room of a police station without being able to remember anything she did the night before. Evidently there is something strange, something that does not fit and that she will gradually begin to notice, the police station is not a conventional thing that Rebecca draws her attention. Once there and they begin to question her, the plot opens up, the curious thing is that the film does not take long to show us what is really happening but leaving much intrigue in the air, we are given only 10% of the real information.

La historia nos presenta a Rebecca Kamen (Abbie Cornish), una mujer que en una madrugada despierta en la sala de interrogación de una estación de policía sin poder recordar nada de lo que hizo la noche anterior. Evidentemente hay algo raro, algo que no cuadra y eso ella poco a poco lo comenzará a notar, la comisaría no es una convencional cosa que a Rebecca le llama la atención. Una vez allí y que la empiezan a interrogar se va abriendo el abanico de la trama, lo curioso es que el film no tarda mucho en mostrarnos lo que realmente está pasando pero dejando mucha intriga en el aire, nos dan apenas un 10% de la información real.

As time goes by, everything becomes clearer, which ends up being a bit of a surprise, there are things that I did not expect, a couple of interesting plot twists that made the film, within its simplicity and that it is no gem of cinema, at least entertaining to watch. Of course, the script is often naive or weak, there are decisions that are made throughout the plot that are not understood, which clearly do it to make the film long but are not coherent at all. What makes the film a total disaster? - no, I think that as I said the plot twists save the plot a little bit. The genre of this is undoubtedly a thriller, I wouldn't say psychological or suspenseful but full of intrigue from beginning to end.

Con el pasar del tiempo se va aclarando todo lo que termina resultando un poco sorpresivo la verdad, hay cosas que no las esperaba, un par de plot twist interesantes que hicieron que la película, dentro de su simpleza y que no es ninguna joya del cine, por lo menos resultara entretenida de ver. Eso si, el guión muchas veces peca de ingenuo o débil, hay decisiones que se toman a lo largo de la trama que no se entienden, que claramente lo hacen para darle largas al film pero no son nada coherentes. Esto que hace que la película sea un desastre total? - no, creo que como dije los plot twist salvan un poco los papeles. El género de esto es sin dudas un thriller no diría psicológico ni de suspenso pero si lleno de intriga de principio a fin.

And I emphasize the intrigue because from the first 5 minutes you start to question things and what you want are answers from there to keep watching the movie. This fact must be emphasized, the script has its weaknesses, yes, but it also manages to keep the viewer sitting there waiting for what is going to happen next because there comes a time when everything starts to get out of control and things become very inevitable and randoms. Have you played CLUE? - that game where you have to guess who is who? - Well, this film has a touch of that and it won't be until the end that you find out who is really who.

Y recalco la intriga porque desde los primeros 5 minutos ya te comienzas a cuestionar cosas y lo que quieres son respuestas de ahí a que sigas viendo la película. Este hecho hay que resaltarlo, el guión tiene sus debilidades, si, pero también consigue que el espectador se quede sentado esperando que es lo próximo que va a pasar porque llega un momento en el que todo se comienza a salir de control y las cosas se vuelven muy inevitables y randoms. Ustedes han jugado CLUE? - ese juego en donde hay que adivinar quien es quien? - pues bueno, este film tiene un toque de eso y no será hasta el final que se sepa quien es verdaderamente quien.

In terms of performances, everything was very average. I think the best were both leads, both Abbie and Laz. The others I noticed a bit overacted at times and that made me not click with any of them. But Abbie I did notice her serene and sober in her character and Laz is given to tough guy characters so his performance was good. Anyway, I give this film a 6.5/10. It's not a masterpiece, nor is it going to win any awards but it serves perfectly well to pass the time with a story full of suspicions, doubts and manipulations. It lasts a little over an hour and a half. I leave the trailer here.

En cuanto a actuaciones pues decir que muy promedio todo. Creo que los mejores fueron ambos protagonistas, tanto Abbie como Laz. A los demás los noté un poco sobreactuados a veces y eso hizo que no hiciera clic con ninguno de ellos. Pero a Abbie si la noté serena y sobria en su personaje y a Laz se le dan los personajes del tipo duro por lo que la interpretación de él estuvo buena. En fin, a este film le doy un 6.5/10. No es una obra maestra, ni se va a ganar ningún premio pero sirve perfectamente para pasar el rato con una historia llena de sospechas, dudas y manipulaciones. Dura poco más de hora y media.
