It was a boring night after school and I had the perfect time to watch a movie, I remembered a movie that a friend had told me about and that I had already seen references of it on social networks several times. Without much background, today I want to talk about Drive.
The nighttime streets of Los Angeles are often the domain of criminals, but before a major criminal, a getaway driver. The best driver in town is the protagonist of a story of action and romance that says a lot with little to say.
A great shot of the city of Los Angeles with moments of the protagonist driving through the lonely streets along with the great Nightcall theme in the background would be what would open the story of this movie, I consider this one of the best opening scenes I've seen of all movies. The story is about a guy who works as a stuntman and helps Shannon (Bryan Cranston) in a garage, this guy is very good at driving and therefore takes advantage of doing business with criminals to be the escape of his crimes which in fact, is the first scene we see in the movie and we are introduced to this first facet of the protagonist before his personal life.
It is clear that the premise of the film is very interesting, even more so when the problem arises. His neighbor whose name is Irene comes into his life unexpectedly, between them there is chemistry and the boy gets along very well with Irene's son, Benicio. The truth is that the first part of the film, it could be said that it is about the presentation of the protagonists and the formation of what becomes the denouement, which actually enters in part along with the presentation of one of Shannon's partners, some gangsters who make deals with him.
Irene actually has a husband, he was in jail and some time after meeting the boy she is informed that he will be released shortly, so it is news that impacts both characters. Of course, the husband being in jail tells us a lot about his past life and even more when he gets out, we are told that he is still in business with criminals. That's just the first half of the movie, a simple and elegant half that is presented in the best of ways to make this movie special and not look like another generic action movie. What does this movie use to do that?
Let's go straight to the acting, Ryan Gosling is one with the role and fits perfectly with the mysteriousness of the main character whose name we don't even know, in the whole movie we know him as "boy" and I'll be honest, I saw the movie twice and the first time I saw it I didn't notice that he is never actually named. The mysticism of this character is stronger when we look at his scenes, he is of few words and I mean VERY few words to the point that there are scenes of a few seconds of silence in which it seems that nothing is really happening. This adds something more to the film, not only to the character, but to the environment itself that actually, at least in my case at the time I saw the film, made me assimilate certain things of the scenario with the characters, making the story of the film immersed with very few words. An example of this which I think it is not even necessary to talk about would be the moments of chemistry between the boy and Irene, which are not few and which in fact gradually assemble the first side of the film: the purity of our protagonist.
The guy is very quiet, when we are out of the criminal moments he comes across as someone very passive and kind in fact, we are made to know that even in the moments with Shannon and his associates which talk a lot more of course, and are bridge to the other side of the movie: The violence. I quote the words of the guy every time he makes deals (within those 5 minutes I'm all yours) to define this facet, and it is basically that the protagonist of this movie changes completely in the moments of business, when he is out of them we are shown as that calm guy and then inside the business he is a criminal of great ability. Once again I refer to the moments with Irene and her family, which is the most romantic part of the film and everything that has to do with the problem is pure action, in fact without one facet can not exist the other in this film because both are action and cause within the same.
Something that I really liked about the film and that describes it very well, leaving aside the acting, is the scenery in general. The camera movements of the film are mostly smooth and static, in the moments of action there are quick cuts but there is not much of those resources that make the camera move as if it were an earthquake or anything, the scenarios are equal to the protagonist and make us see that we are watching the film from his eyes and not those of Irene, or Shannon or anyone else. I love the photography of this film, there are moments of strong violence that give adrenaline after so much calm, there are moments that perfectly describe how the boy's calm is unleashed in the most necessary moments. However, I had forgotten to talk about something that also helped a lot to understand what happens with the protagonist, the soundtrack that accompanies the film is phenomenal, it has two songs that stand out a lot to define the two moments of the protagonist which are Nightcall and A Real Hero, We had already been introduced to the protagonist at first with Nightcall in the moving and epic opening scene of the film but then in the romance of the boy and Irene we are presented with A Real Hero, which is the main theme of both and clearly describes well this facet of the protagonist, that at the end of the day despite the things that happened within the film, it is this last facet that ends up highlighting along with this song at the end of the film.
Finally, the boy would go back to the way he was before he met Irene. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen because of its particular style, the acting, the cinematography, everything portrays the movie very well and it is now a modern classic that shows a short and good story. Era una noche aburrida luego de clases a la cual tenia el momento perfecto para ver una pelicula, recorde en ese entonces una pelicula que un amigo me habia comentado y que ya en varias ocasiones llegue a ver referencias de la misma en redes sociales. Sin mucho trasfondo, el dia de hoy quiero hablarles de Drive: El escape.
Las calles nocturnas de Los Angeles son de dominio de criminales muchas veces pero antes que un gran criminal, un chofer que de escape. El mejor conductor de la ciudad es protagonista de una historia de acción y romance que dice mucho con poco hablar.
Un gran plano de la ciudad de Los Angeles con momentos del protagonista conduciendo por las calles solitarias junto con el gran tema Nightcall de fondo serian lo que abrirían la historia de esta película, considero esta una de las mejores escenas de apertura que he visto de todas las películas. La historia es acerca de un chico que trabaja como doble de riesgo y ayuda en un taller a Shannon (Bryan Cranston), este chico es muy bueno manejando y por ende aprovecha de hacer negocios con criminales para ser el escape de sus crímenes que de hecho, es la primera escena que vemos en la película y se nos introduce esta primera faceta del protagonista antes que su vida personal.
Esta claro que la premisa de la película es muy interesante, mas aun cuando surge la problemática. Su vecina cuyo nombre es Irene llega a su vida de forma inesperada, entre ambos hay química y el chico se lleva muy bien con el hijo de Irene, Benicio. La verdad la primera parte de la película, se podría decir que se trata de la presentación de los protagonistas y la formación de lo que viene a ser el desenlace, que en realidad entra en parte junto con la presentación de uno de los socios de Shannon, unos mafiosos que hacen tratos con el.
Irene en realidad tiene un esposo, estaba en la cárcel y un tiempo después de haber conocido a el chico se le informa que saldrá en poco tiempo, por tanto es una noticia que impacta a ambos personajes. Por supuesto, el esposo al estar en la cárcel nos dice mucho de lo que era su vida pasada y mas aun cuando sale, que se nos hace saber que aun esta en negocios con criminales. Nada mas esto es la primera mitad de la película, una mitad sencilla y elegante que se presenta de la mejor de las maneras para hacer de esta película especial y que no se parezca a otra película de acción genérica ¿Que es lo que utiliza esta película para lograr eso?
Vamos directamente con la actuación, que Ryan Gosling es uno con el papel y encaja perfectamente con lo misterioso que es el personaje principal al cual ni siquiera sabemos el nombre, en toda la película lo conocemos como "chico" y les seré sincero, vi la película dos veces y la primera vez que la vi no note que en realidad nunca se le nombra. El misticismo de este personaje es mas fuerte cuando nos fijamos en sus escenas, es de pocas palabras y lo digo, MUY pocas palabras al punto que existen escenas de algunos segundos de silencio en los cuales parece que en realidad no esta pasando nada. Esto agrega algo mas a la película, no solo al personaje, sino al entorno en si que en realidad que al menos en mi caso al momento que vi la película hizo que asimilara ciertas cosas del escenario con los personajes, volviendo inmersa la historia de la película con muy pocas palabras. Un ejemplo de ello del cual creo que hasta no hace falta hablar serian los momentos de química entre el chico e Irene, que no son pocos y que de hecho arman poco a poco la primera cara de la película: La pureza de nuestro protagonista.
El chico es muy tranquilo, cuando estamos fuera de los momentos criminales el se ve como alguien muy pasivo y amable de hecho, se nos hace saber eso incluso en los momentos con Shannon y sus socios los cuales hablan mucho mas por supuesto, y son puente a la otra cara de la película: La violencia. Cito las palabras del chico cada que hace tratos (dentro de esos 5 minutos soy todo tuyo) para definir esta faceta, y es básicamente que el protagonista de esta película cambia por completo en los momentos de negocios, cuando esta fuera de ellos se nos muestra como ese chico calmado y ya luego dentro de los negocios es todo un criminal de gran habilidad. Una vez mas hago referencia a los momentos con Irene y su familia, que es la parte mas romántica de la película y todo lo que tiene que ver con la problemática es acción pura, que de hecho sin una faceta no puede existir la otra en esta película porque ambas son accion y causa dentro de la misma.
Algo que me gusto mucho de la película y que describe muy bien a la misma dejando de lado la actuación, se trata de los escenarios en general. Los movimientos de cámara de la película son en la mayoría suaves y estáticos, en los momentos de acción se muestran cortes rápidos pero no hay mucho de esos recursos que hacen que la cámara se mueva como si fuera un terremoto ni nada, los escenarios son iguales al protagonistas y hacen ver que estamos viendo la película desde sus ojos y no de los de Irene, ni Shannon ni nadie mas. Me encanta la fotografía de esta película, existen momentos de fuerte violencia que dan adrenalina luego de tanta calma, hay momentos que describen perfectamente como se desata la calma del chico en los momentos mas necesarios. Sin embargo, había olvidado hablar de algo que también ayudo mucho a entender que es lo que pasa con el protagonista, el soundtrack que acompaña a la película es fenomenal, tiene dos canciones que destacan mucho por definir los dos momentos del protagonista los cuales son Nightcall y A Real Hero, ya se nos había presentado al protagonista en un principio con Nightcall en la movida y épica escena inicial de la película pero luego en el romance del chico e Irene se nos presenta A Real Hero, la cual es el tema principal de ambos y claramente describe bien esta faceta del protagonista, que al final del día a pesar de las cosas que sucedieron dentro de la película, es esta ultima faceta la que termina destacando junto con esta canción al final del film.
Finalmente, el chico volvería a como estaba antes de conocer a Irene. Esta es de las mejores películas que he visto por su estilo particular, la actuación, la fotografía, todo retrata muy bien a la película y se trata ahora de un clásico moderno que muestra una corta y buena historia. Mira se ve interesante, cuando comentaste lo del taxi se me vino a la mente la canción de Ricardo Arjona. Negocios criminales, un chico común, simplón y un escenario que cambia por la criminalidad. Algo anómalo en la trama, interesante. :p

Admito que la primera vez que la Vi no me atrapó por concreto, pero tuvo que ver por haberla visto con las expectativas incorrectas.

Lo primero que me atrajo a esta película fue el Soundtrack. Escuché Nightcall y vi que formaba parte de una película, así que le di una oportunidad.
Excelente filme, mucho estilo y da un contraste a la vida cotidiana y los "negocios" de un criminal. Similar a lo que se puede ver en otros medios como los videojuegos con Hotline Miami.
