As Bestas - We all have a beast inside | Film Review [En-Es]
The team formed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Isabel Peña once again demonstrate that they are a reference of the best of Spanish cinema in recent years. There is no need to repeat Sorogoyen's filmography, in previous reviews of several of his works I have written about the filmmaker's progression and consolidation.
El equipo formado por Rodrigo Sorogoyen e Isabel Peña vuelven a demostrar que son un referente de lo mejor del cine español de los últimos años. No es necesario repetir la filmografía de Sorogoyen, en anteriores reseñas de varios de sus trabajos he escrito sobre la progresión y consolidación del cineasta.
His latest productions, both films and miniseries, constituted what some called the Sorogoyenverse. With As bestas he goes up a step in his creative level, moving away from urban stories that spread their conflicts in various elements of society, to focus now on a more intimate story, shot with sobriety and in a rougher environment, addressing the complex human behavior from a rural microcosm.
What separates us from the beasts? We could conclude that it is the ability to reason that separates us from our animal side. Is it true? Perhaps those who study science and human behavior have the answer to the questions I pose. But if it is only the ability to reason, why do we continue to make the same mistakes for centuries? Why is violence so pervasive in our society? Why do we seem destined to destroy each other?
Perhaps the power to reason, to think, to analyze, at the same time that distinguishes us from other species that inhabit our world, makes us the worst predators. A wild animal, for example a lion, attacks other species out of instinct of protection and need to feed, but human beings can attack and kill others only out of resentment, revenge or ambition. So, who is the beast?
We are often surprised when we hear tragic stories, we live so engrossed in our world that we forget that someday we may be the protagonists of that which amazes us, either as victim or victimizer. As much as we believe that we are incapable of doing certain things, in reality we all have a beast inside, it only takes a trigger to make us lose that power of reason and push us to do things that we can't even imagine at the moment.
Don't you think it's possible? Watch the news, enter social networks, observe how hatred and the imposition of ideas, to control a territory, has the world immersed in an eternal confrontation, wars that cause irreparable losses. Wild animals live in conflict, but they do it by instinct. We, the thinking beings who dominate the planet, live in conflict, but by choice.
In the end the most innocent end up with the wounds, bearing the burden of pain and this film reflects it impeccably.
Sus últimas producciones, tanto películas como miniseries, constituyeron lo que algunos llamaron el Sorogoyenverso. Con As bestas sube un peldaño más en su nivel creativo, alejándose de las historias urbanas que reparten sus conflictos en diversos elementos de la sociedad, para centrarse ahora en un relato más íntimo, rodado con sobriedad y en un entorno más áspero, abordando el complejo comportamiento humano desde un microcosmos rural.
¿Qué nos separa de las bestias? Podríamos concluir que es la capacidad de razonar es lo que nos separa de nuestro lado animal. ¿Es cierto? Tal vez los que estudian la ciencia y el comportamiento humano tengan la respuesta a las preguntas que planteo. Pero si es sólo la capacidad de razonar, ¿por qué seguimos cometiendo los mismos errores desde hace siglos? ¿Por qué la violencia está tan presente en nuestra sociedad? ¿Por qué parecemos destinados a destruirnos unos a otros?
Quizá el poder de razonar, de pensar, de analizar, al mismo tiempo que nos distingue de otras especies que habitan nuestro mundo, nos convierte en los peores depredadores. Un animal salvaje, por ejemplo un león, ataca a otras especies por instinto de protección y necesidad de alimentarse, pero el ser humano puede atacar y matar a otros sólo por resentimiento, venganza o ambición. Entonces, ¿quién es la bestia?
Nos sorprendemos en muchas ocasiones cuando escuchamos historias trágicas, vivimos tan ensimismados en nuestro mundo que olvidamos que algún día podemos ser los protagonistas de aquello que nos asombra, ya sea como víctima o victimario. Por mucho que creamos que somos incapaces de hacer ciertas cosas, en realidad todos tenemos una bestia dentro, sólo hace falta un detonante para que perdamos ese poder de raciocinio y nos impulse a hacer cosas que en este momento no podemos ni imaginar.
¿No crees que es posible? Mira las noticias, entra en las redes sociales, observa como el odio, y la imposición de ideas, para controlar un territorio, tiene al mundo sumido en un eterno enfrentamiento, guerras que causan pérdidas irreparables. Los animales salvajes viven en conflicto, pero lo hacen por instinto. Nosotros, los seres pensantes que dominamos el planeta, vivimos en conflicto, pero por elección.
Al final los más inocentes acaban con las heridas, soportando el peso del dolor y esta película lo refleja de forma impecable.
Tighten the rope
Tighten the rope, what happens is that the agent likes to tighten the rope, tighten, tighten, tighten! So exclaimed one of the characters in the miniseries Antidisturbios created by Sorogoyen and that is something that the filmmaker knows how to do masterfully in each of his productions. He introduces us to each story and with the precision of a surgeon of cinematographic art, he raises the tension by pulling the rope slowly, but forcefully, until it bursts subtly but devastatingly.
In As Bestas Sorogoyen takes his time to show us the origin of the whole conflict, which is already present at the beginning of the film. The tension is palpable from the first minutes, in a simple conversation in a bar in a village, where the voice of one of them stands out, a strong and imposing voice that everyone seems to respect or fear.
The magnificent thing about this scene is the way it is constructed and that serves as a basis to introduce the two antagonistic characters, to show us the character of each one and that rarefied and thick atmosphere in which this town seems to be lost, we do not know the causes, we know nothing of the past, but using cinematic language, the first duel between the two men who star in much of this story takes place.
Those who are lovers of old western movies, will be able to compare this great scene of presentation and duel, like many of those we have seen in this genre that take place in a saloon, where everyone present is expectant, waiting to see the reaction of these two men facing each other, with the difference that for the moment there are no weapons, only words.
Sorogoyen is tightening the rope and it breaks much sooner than we imagine, the filmmaker will keep us for more than half of the footage in a state of constant tension, each act of the story is raising it to higher levels, taking control of what we feel producing in us states of anguish, while we expect that at any moment everything ends up going to hell.
When you watch the film, that moment will be suffocating, all the tension that the story has made you accumulate, you are going to feel that it is released, giving you relief, yes, a sense of relief because that distressing atmosphere seems to end, but it is also accompanied by pain, tragedy and the consequences of those acts.
Deep Spain
As I said at the beginning, we leave the universe that Sorogoyen has built in his urban stories, to enter the deep Spain. A town in Galicia, northeastern Spain, inhabited by people who, like their ancestors, were born, lived and will die there. The tragedy narrated in the film could well be part of a story of the black legend of Spain.
A town where everyone knows everyone else, from which some long to escape because they can't stand the life they have been given, and anyone who is not from there is an outsider to be mistrusted. Small town, big hell. But the outsider also decides to stay, even if everything is against him.
In the opening credits we are warned that it is inspired by a true story, I did not want to look for information about that particular fact. How much truth is there in the story? What is fiction? I leave that task to you.
A detail that I loved is the use of the languages of the region, there are many scenes spoken in Galician, bringing a lot of realism to the story, there are also many scenes spoken in French, because some characters are from that country and in certain occasions Spanish as a common language between locals and foreigners.
Apretar la cuerda
Tensar la cuerda, lo que pasa es que al agente le gusta tensar la cuerda, ¡tensar, tensar, tensar! Así exclamaba uno de los personajes de la miniserie Antidisturbios creada por Sorogoyen y eso es algo que el cineasta sabe hacer con maestría en cada una de sus producciones. Nos introduce en cada historia y con la precisión de un cirujano del arte cinematográfico, eleva la tensión tirando de la cuerda lentamente, pero con fuerza, hasta que revienta sutilmente pero de forma devastadora.
En As Bestas Sorogoyen se toma su tiempo para mostrarnos el origen de todo el conflicto, que ya está presente al principio de la película. La tensión se palpa desde los primeros minutos, en una simple conversación en un bar de un pueblo, donde destaca la voz de uno de ellos, una voz fuerte e imponente que todos parecen respetar o temer.
Lo magnífico de esta escena es la forma en que está construida y que sirve de base para presentar a los dos personajes antagónicos, para mostrarnos el carácter de cada uno y esa atmósfera enrarecida y espesa en la que parece perderse este pueblo, no sabemos las causas, no sabemos nada del pasado, pero utilizando el lenguaje cinematográfico, se produce el primer duelo entre los dos hombres que protagonizan gran parte de esta historia.
Los que sean amantes de las viejas películas del oeste, podrán comparar esta gran escena de presentación y duelo, como muchas de las que hemos visto en este género que se desarrollan en una cantina, donde todos los presentes están expectantes, esperando ver la reacción de estos dos hombres enfrentados, con la diferencia de que por el momento no hay armas, sólo palabras.
Sorogoyen va tensando la cuerda y ésta rompe mucho antes de lo que imaginamos, el cineasta nos mantendrá durante más de la mitad del metraje en un estado de tensión constante, cada acto de la historia lo va elevando a niveles superiores, tomando el control de lo que sentimos produciendo en nosotros estados de angustia, mientras esperamos que en cualquier momento todo se acabe yendo al carajo.
Cuando veas la película, ese momento será asfixiante, toda la tensión que la historia te ha hecho acumular, vas a sentir que se libera, dándote alivio, sí, una sensación de alivio porque esa atmósfera angustiosa parece terminar, pero también va acompañada del dolor, la tragedia y las consecuencias de esos actos.
La España profunda
Como decía al principio, salimos del universo que Sorogoyen ha construido en sus historias urbanas, para adentrarnos en la España profunda. Un pueblo de Galicia, al noreste de España, habitado por personas que, como sus antepasados, nacieron, vivieron y morirán allí. La tragedia narrada en la película bien podría formar parte de una historia de la leyenda negra de España.
Un pueblo en el que todos se conocen, del que algunos anhelan escapar porque no soportan la vida que les ha tocado y que cualquiera que no sea de allí es un forastero del que hay que desconfiar. Pueblo pequeño, infierno grande. Pero también el forastero decide quedarse, aunque todo esté en su contra.
En los créditos iniciales se nos advierte que está inspirada en una historia real, no quise buscar información sobre ese hecho concreto. ¿Cuánto hay de verdad en la historia? ¿Qué hay de ficción? Les dejo esa tarea a ustedes.
Un detalle que me encantó es el uso de las lenguas de la región, hay muchas escenas habladas en gallego, aportando bastante realismo a la historia, también hay muchas escenas habladas en francés, porque algunos personajes son de ese país y en ciertas ocasiones el español como lengua común entre locales y foráneos.
An acting beast
Luis Zahera's work is monumental, he is an acting beast, bringing to his character Xan an overwhelming force capable of causing fear and repulsion just with his presence. There is a part of the film in which his character appears little and that is where some may feel that the story loses some strength, but everything is justified, certainly I wanted to see more of him in the last third of the film, but it was time for the calm after the storm.
I predict that Zahera will be nominated for the Goya awards next year and he is my favorite to win it. He already won one as supporting actor, precisely in another film directed by Sorogoyen, a filmmaker who knows how to exploit the talent of his cast to the fullest.
Not only do I expect Zahera to win awards, the rest of the cast also deserves to be nominated. Frenchman Denis Ménochet also plays his character impeccably, he also has a powerful physical presence and his character Antoine will have to endure the scorn and insults of the people who hate him, until he brings out the beast in all of us. By the way, I hope some moviegoers recognize him. He is an actor who worked in one of Tarantino's movies with a memorable scene, if you recognize him and remember the movie, let me know in the comments.
French actress Marina Foïs is another one I hope gets a nomination, an important part of the story is taken on by her and she has a very significant scene. She is a well-known actress in her country, but I only remember seeing her in a film called Polisse.
I've come this far and I still haven't told you the story of the film. Don't worry, when I explain what a movie is about I don't say anything that might spoil the viewing.
What is the plot?
A ruined village located in Galicia, is the place chosen by the French professor Antoine and his wife Olga to live in tranquility, they have enough land to harvest and live from it, in addition to other projects they have in mind to attract tourists. For the locals they are strangers, outsiders, especially for Xan and Lorenzo, two brothers who are neighbors of the Frenchman and seem to hate Antoine. The conflicts with the neighbors of their land are more and more frequent and will disturb the peace that Antoine and his wife wish to have in this place that for them is a paradise. Why is Xan so resentful of the Frenchman? What has happened to make the majority look askance at Antoine? What will the Frenchman do to stop the sabotage of his neighbors? Will he be able to protect his land, his life project, his family? What will happen when the beasts confront each other?
As bestas is a hard, cruel, painful and beautiful film. With a suffocating atmosphere and whose narrative thread will take us to the darkest side of the human being. There is no point in living in paradise if you are surrounded by wild beasts that will end up devouring you. It is for me, one of the best Spanish films of the year and I hope to see it triumph next year at the Goya awards.

Una bestia actoral
El trabajo de Luis Zahera es monumental, es una bestia actoral, aportando a su personaje Xan una fuerza arrolladora capaz de causar miedo y repulsión sólo con su presencia. Hay una parte de la película en la que su personaje aparece poco y es ahí donde a algunos les puede hacer sentir que la historia pierde algo de fuerza, pero todo está justificado, ciertamente yo quería ver más de él en el último tercio de la película, pero ya era hora de la calma después de la tormenta.
Auguro que Zahera será nominado a los premios Goya el próximo año y es mi favorito para ganarlo. Ya ganó uno como actor de reparto, precisamente en otra película dirigida por Sorogoyen, un cineasta que sabe explotar al máximo el talento de su reparto.
No sólo espero que Zahera gane premios, el resto del reparto también merece ser nominado. El francés Denis Ménochet también interpreta su personaje de forma impecable, además tiene una poderosa presencia física y su personaje Antoine tendrá que soportar los desprecios e insultos de la gente que le odia, hasta sacar la bestia que todos llevamos dentro. Por cierto, espero que algunos cinéfilos le reconozcan. Es un actor que trabajó en una de las películas de Tarantino con una escena memorable, si lo reconoces y recuerdas la película, házmelo saber en los comentarios.

He llegado hasta aquí y todavía no te he contado la historia de la película. No te preocupes, cuando explico de qué va una película no digo nada que pueda estropear el visionado.
¿Cuál es el argumento?
Una aldea en ruinas situada en Galicia, es el lugar elegido por el profesor francés Antoine y su mujer Olga para vivir con tranquilidad, tienen tierras suficientes para cosechar y vivir de ello, además de otros proyectos que tienen en mente para atraer a los turistas. Para los lugareños son unos extraños, unos forasteros, sobre todo para Xan y Lorenzo, dos hermanos vecinos del francés que parecen tenerle odio a Antoine. Los conflictos con los vecinos de su tierra son cada vez más frecuentes y alterarán la paz que Antoine y su mujer desean tener en este lugar que para ellos es un paraíso. ¿Por qué Xan está tan resentido con el francés? ¿Qué ha pasado para que la mayoría mire con recelo a Antoine? ¿Qué hará el francés para detener el sabotaje de sus vecinos? ¿Será capaz de proteger su tierra, su proyecto de vida, su familia? ¿Qué ocurrirá cuando las bestias se enfrenten?
As bestas es una película dura, cruel, dolorosa y hermosa. Con una atmósfera asfixiante y cuyo hilo narrativo nos llevará al lado más oscuro del ser humano. De nada sirve vivir en el paraíso si estás rodeado de bestias salvajes que acabarán devorándote. Es para mí, una de las mejores películas españolas del año y espero verla triunfar el próximo año en los premios Goya.

I will watch this movie soon. I have seen your posts before, but this is the first one I have read in detail since I started following you. You described the movie perfectly and even if it was a bad movie, I would be curious to watch it after reading this post. It is a movie with a slow pace, but with a tension that grows by the minute. To me it seems one of the best Spanish films of the year, but I must admit that I am a big fan of the director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, I am fascinated by all his previous productions, both films and series, I recommend you all his filmography, at the moment it is short.

Sorogoyen me parece uno de los mejores cineastas actuales de España, me han gustado todas sus producciones y aquí vuelve a traernos un historia llena de intriga con una tensión que crece durante todo el metraje. Fue proyectada en Cannes y estaba esperando verla, compartí un teaser hace tiempo en discord. Te la recomiendo, hay muchas películas españolas buenas, esta es una de ellas y cuando anuncien los Goya, estoy seguro que recibirá varias nominaciones.

Esto me llamó la atención, la cadena alimenticia es tan rara cuando es aplicable para la ciencia, nosotros somos parte de esa cadena, ¿entonces somos la cúspide animal? Irónico, pero ser depredador sólo por satisfacción es precario y malvado.
Esto es algo que se matiza hoy día, la guerra en este momento es algo que refleja la realidad de lo que precisabas anteriormente. Eso deja muy claro las ambiciones, hay un libro que sostiene que el arte de la guerra es evitarla, evitarla por medio de la confluencia económica. ¿Qué piensas de ello?
El film me parece interesante, se matiza con un conflicto interno, me está llamando la atención el hecho de tensar, tensar y tensar. Este tipo de película se parece a las preferencias de mi abuelo. Al parecer todo se matiza, de una manera atrayente, por lo que veo, por esta cuestión, bueno, yo estoy viendo actualmente 1899. 🙊🙈

Me gusta esa mezcla diversa en la jerga que existe en la mezcla cultural del espacio, ¡Frances y Gallego! Eso debe dar un buen punto en las escenas.
Me está llamando la atención, reproduje el tráiler y se ve ese toque oscuro, llamativo e intrigante. 👀 Aún tengo planteado ver la Novia Gitana, pero también pondré esta en la mira.
Somos malvados, todos tenemos una bestia dormida dentro de nosotros. hasta el mas dócil y bueno, puede transformarse en alguien malvado.
El arte dela guerra es evitarla, eso me parece algo difícil de cumplir, aunque evites cualquier tipo de confrontación, puede que las circunstancias te empujen a la guerra, al conflicto. A veces es inevitable, si eres atacado, debes defenderte. Aunque soy pacifico y estoy en contra de la violencia, hay momentos de la vida y de la historia en que la violencia es una solución.
Me gusto el detalle de usar actores de la región y que hablaran en su idioma, e aporta realismo. Por cierto, si ya comenzaste a ver 1899 allí también cada grupo habla en su idioma.
Espero que el film reciba muchas nominaciones al Goya el próximo año. Zahera ya gano como actor de reparto pro El Reino, otra película de Sorogoyen, en esa le basto una sola escena para ganar ese premio, creo que lo volverá ganar porque aquí la peta durísimo.
Te recomienda la filmografía de Sorogoyen: puedes comenzar con Estocolmo, fue la primera que vi del director, una historia muy intimista con solo dos personajes. Luego vienen las que llaman el Sorogoyenverso con las películas Que Dios nos Perdone, El Reino y la mini serie Antidisturbios. También tiene otro drama potente titulado Madre. Todo su cine vale la pena verlo

Esto en definitiva me recordó a Maquiavelo, aunque Rousseau se contrapone a esto y Weber da un matiz un poco profundo sobre ello. Recordé por un momento también a la escuela de Chicago .
Claro, la cuestión es como la evitas de una manera que no exista un enfrentamiento directo, la modalidad, debe estar en las formas estratégicas. Claro, esta es una apreciación posicional en un enfrentamiento, aunque los seres humanos son beligerantes.
Con respecto a 1899 me he dado cuenta de ello, pero aún no quiero dar un criterio profundo, debo verla todas, indiscutiblemente la voy a ver completa. jajajajaja Me tiene emocionado XD.
Esta me ha llamado la atención por un tema personal, y es interesante para poder conjugarla o conjugarlo con ello. Veo cosas muy visuales dentro de la misma.
Anotadas en la agenda la filmografía de Sorogoyen, con respecto a Novia Gitana la voy a ver, pero al salir del proyecto final o de los proyectos. Toda una cosa eso.
Quiero verla, consumo muy poco contenido en español, y sé que hay mucho bueno, pero simplemente mi cerebro no lo procesa, me cuesta ver algo en español, ya me acostumbré a escuchar todo en otro idioma, pero esta película me provoca verla, se ve intensa y eso llama mucho la atención. Decime por privado dónde la viste.
Hay mucho dialogo en gallego puro y en francés, porque esta ambientada en Galicia y usaron actores de esa región española, dándole mayor realismo y cuando interactúan los personajes franceses entre ellos, pues hablan en francés. A mi me gusto bastante. La veo con muchas nominaciones a los Goya.

La proyección que comparte, posee carga social violenta, de resentimiento y de competitividad, todo tiene un porqué y debo descubrirlo. El comportamiento racional se desvanece y el control visceral es comandado por el cerebro primitivo y emocional, parece que el pensamiento de los hemisferios son subordinados; entonces, supongo que ahí está la estrategia del director, tensar y soltar la cuerda, cuando el cerebro se desborda, no hay equilibrio.
Otra peli que sumar.
Cuando es aparte primitiva y emociona toma le control , todo se desborda y se comenten hechos horribles, pero al mismo tiempo son hechos premeditados, planificados por lo que también hay una parte racional consiente de lo que se va a hace.
Te la recomiendo, el cineasta siempre hace una excelente construcción de personajes.

Sí, claro por eso la parte frontal es subordinada, hay planificación consciente pero llevada de instito de supervivencia, territorial y emotiva. Claro que la voy a ver.

I really liked your review of this movie my friend, I'm going to put it on my list to see what it's like.
I hope you can see it, it is a very good Spanish film. I also recommend the filmmaker's previous films, all of them are excellent.
