Another biopic made to be acclaimed at film festivals and award ceremonies, but one that seems to have slipped through the cracks. This film was also promoted by emphasizing the performance of its lead actress, in this case Sydney Sweeney, American's current girlfriend and considered by many to be one of the sexiest women around at the moment. She is attractive and in this film she undergoes a physical transformation, aided by makeup, of course. Having a beautiful actress play someone who is not so beautiful has always been very popular with audiences and award voters.

She's not the only one who shows a big physical change; her co-star, Ben Foster, is unrecognizable. I swear, I didn't think it was him until I checked the movie credits. And that's despite the fact that I recently saw another movie starring him, but here he's brutal as Christy's coach and husband, a man who took advantage of her, exploited her, and abused her to the point of almost killing her.

I don't think the film was the box office success its producers had hoped for. Here I have to make a comparison with the Dwayne Johnson film I reviewed a few days ago. Both are set in the violent world of contact sports. Both also feature fabulous performances, with the lead actors giving themselves completely to their characters, but the final product has not been as successful as they had hoped. What the hell is going on? These kinds of stories almost always work well. In The Rock, I already mentioned its flaws and that I found it boring, that it had no soul. Now, I liked Christy better.

One of the problems I noticed in Christy is that in the first half of the film, the characters are quite passionate, Christy's beginnings, the nightmare of having a very conservative family and having to repress her sexual orientation, all of which builds up and then fades away when she steps into the ring and leaves her opponent on the ground. I thought all of that was perfect. The problem is when they try to delve into the toxic relationship with her coach and husband. Mind you, this is based on real events, so yes, this woman, who is capable of hitting even a man, allowed herself to be abused by her husband. It seems illogical, but it's real.

I agree that domestic violence should be shown and denounced, but please don't make it boring or so long, because that's the main flaw I found in the story. They insisted on dragging it out, so the second half becomes tedious, and what could have been a tremendous movie ends up being merely acceptable.

Her husband's abuse, her friends' concern, her mother's indifference to the problem, even her former opponents who train her worry about her and try to wake her up from the toxic spiral that is destroying her. All of that takes up a lot of time and is even repetitive at times, and damn it, it ends up making you a little sleepy and wanting it all to end quickly.

The two protagonists have been unfairly excluded from the Golden Globe nominations. It's things like this that undermine the credibility of the awards. They both deserve to be on that list. Let's hope that one of them is included in the Oscars, but it's unlikely.

Esta película también se promocionó haciendo hincapié en la actuación de su actriz principal, en este caso Sydney Sweeney, la actual novia de American y considerada por muchos como una de las mujeres más sexys del momento. Es atractiva y en esta película sufre una transformación física, ayudada por el maquillaje, por supuesto. Que una actriz guapa interprete a alguien que no lo es tanto siempre ha sido muy popular entre el público y los que otorgan los premios.

No es la única que muestra un gran cambio físico; su coprotagonista, Ben Foster, está irreconocible. Lo juro, no creí que fuera él hasta que comprobé los créditos de la película. Y eso a pesar de que recientemente vi otra película protagonizada por él, pero aquí es brutal como el entrenador y marido de Christy, un hombre que se aprovechó de ella, la explotó y abusó de ella hasta el punto de casi matarla.

No creo que la película haya tenido el éxito de taquilla que esperaban sus productores. Aquí tengo que hacer una comparación con la película de La Roca que reseñé hace unos días. Ambas están ambientadas en el violento mundo del deporte de contacto fisico. Ambas cuentan también con fabulosas interpretaciones, con los actores principales entregándose por completo a sus personajes, pero el producto final no ha tenido el éxito que esperaban. ¿Qué demonios está pasando? Este tipo de historias casi siempre funcionan bien. Enla de la Roca, ya mencioné sus defectos y que me pareció aburrida, que no tenía alma. Ahora bien, Christy me gustó más.

Uno de los problemas que noté en Christy es que en la primera mitad de la película, los personajes son bastante apasionados, los comienzos de Christy, la pesadilla de tener una familia muy conservadora y tener que reprimir su orientación sexual, todo lo cual se acumula y se desvanece cuando ella sube al ring y deja a su oponente en el suelo. Todo eso me pareció perfecto. El problema es cuando intentan profundizar en la relación tóxica con su entrenador y marido. Fíjate, esto está basado en hechos reales, así que sí, esta mujer, que es capaz de golpear incluso a un hombre, se dejó maltratar por su marido. Parece ilógico, pero es real.

Estoy de acuerdo en que la violencia doméstica debe mostrarse y denunciarse, pero por favor, no la hagan aburrida ni tan larga, porque ese es el principal defecto que le encontré a la historia. Insistieron en alargarla mucho, por lo que la segunda mitad se vuelve tediosa, y lo que podría haber sido una película tremenda termina siendo simplemente aceptable.

El maltrato de su marido, la preocupación de sus amigos, la indiferencia de su madre ante el problema, incluso sus antiguos oponentes que la entrenan se preocupan por ella e intentan despertarla de la espiral tóxica que la está destruyendo. Todo eso ocupa mucho tiempo e incluso es repetitivo a veces, y maldita sea, acaba por darte un poco de sueño y ganas de que todo termine rápidamente.

Los dos protagonistas han sido injustamente excluidos de las nominaciones a los Globos de Oro. Son cosas como estas las que minan la credibilidad de los premios. Ambos merecen estar en esa lista. Esperemos que alguno de ellos sea incluido en los Oscar, pero es poco probable.
