I've been waiting for you
With four episodes aired out of a total of eight that make up this miniseries, I assure you it will be one of the year's most outstanding productions. A number of elements work perfectly. There are series where everything seems to fit together flawlessly: the tone, the cast, the direction, the story, etc. This is one of them, and if you haven't started watching it yet, you're missing out on a great story.
To begin, it's necessary to have some context. The miniseries is an adaptation, with many changes, of course, of the 1987 film Black Widow, directed by Bob Rafelson and starring Debra Winger. These names might not ring a bell for younger viewers, but they were huge stars in their time. I remember the film because I saw it on VHS in the nineties. The original material is good, and this new adaptation, in miniseries format, is excellent.
Forget about the original film; they are two different productions, set in very different eras. The creator of the miniseries, Elizabeth Meriwether, has had other successful television shows, including the excellent miniseries The Dropout, about the real-life Theranos fraud. I recommended that miniseries some time ago in a post.
Victims of violence can become more violent. That's a line spoken in one of the episodes, and from a psychological perspective, it's true. If we analyze it, many people who have been victims of some kind of violence can develop a passive-aggressive state that can erupt when they find themselves in an extreme situation that triggers tension, activates memories, traumas, and so on.
I find it fascinating that the miniseries delves into the drama of the main characters, because they're handling it very well so far. The plot follows the new FBI agent, Alice Black, who was a police officer but left the force due to a history of violence. She's still haunted by this personal trauma, and in her first case with the FBI, she's assigned to hunt down what appears to be a serial killer. Alice's counterpart is Catherine Grace, a young woman who commits specific crimes, motivated by rather gruesome events in her past.
The story employs the typical tropes of this type of production: investigations, clues, secrets, superiors who seem incapable of solving anything, past mistakes, etc. There's nothing groundbreaking, but the story manages to give its characters well-defined personalities, clear motivations for their actions, and, of course, superb performances from the entire cast.
Emmy Rossum is phenomenal. Every shot, every gesture, every look. She is Alice Black, and she convincingly portrays the vulnerability stemming from her experiences in the police force. She's a very good actress; many only know her from Shameless, but she deserves more roles that allow her to shine as she does in this case. On the other hand, we have British actress Lola Petticrew as the serial killer. I already spoke highly of this actress when I reviewed the series Say Nothing. I have another series of hers, titled Trespasses, on my watchlist.
The story goes beyond the search for the serial killer; each character experiences their own dramas and problems, handled with fairness and realism, creating a deep connection between them. Surely, as the end approaches, the two protagonists will grow closer and, even though they're on opposite sides, perhaps they'll come to understand each other.
For now, I'm sure it will make my list of the best of the year, and I hope you'll watch it and tell me what you think in the comments.
