I had seen many positive reviews of this film, plus it was at the Golden Globes and also has Oscar nominations. I have seen several films by director Chloé Zhao, including the Oscar-winning Nomadland. Does anyone remember that film? I don't think many do. Her intimate style, which comes from independent cinema, was something that caught my attention. I even defended her work in The Eternals, a film that was torn apart by a large sector, but I liked it a little. Now, I have to admit that the director has lost momentum.

Many will say that Hamnet is a masterpiece, but at this point, I completely disagree. In terms of filming, technique, and landscapes, I can say that it is beautiful. The images are clean and very pretty, but what matters to me is the story, and although it seems to have broken some people's hearts, it had a different effect on me.

The film deals with the theme of loss, and I thought I would like it. I even expected it to make me cry, because I love films that move me and make me suffer. But that wasn't the case. This film made me feel deeply bored and sleepy. I made a great effort to finish it, to find out where it was going and what the ending would be, which for me was even more disappointing. I can't deny that the ending was very beautiful and that it undoubtedly intended to convey sadness, acceptance, and resignation, but I didn't feel any of that because it focuses so much on the beauty of the framing that it forgets to make me feel anything.

There's nothing wrong with it being a slow-paced film with a more intimate story. I don't mind that; on the contrary, it's the kind of film I like, but this one didn't captivate me, it didn't reach me, I found it all very artificial, as if they were trying too hard to make something that seemed very transcendent, and it left me cold. Nothing like Train Dreams, for example. That film does tackle a human story, simple, with a slow pace, also using nature as a backdrop, but it's a masterpiece that touches the soul. That's my favorite for the awards, although I know it will go home empty-handed.

The only thing I like about Hamnet is Jessie Buckley's performance as William Shakespeare's wife. But seriously, why on earth did they call her Agnes? Shakespeare's wife and Hamnet's mother was named Anne Hathaway, yes, just like the famous Hollywood actress. Buckley gives herself completely to her character; she is the real star and strives in every scene to convey her pain at the death of her only son. I'm sure she's the favorite for the Oscar, as she won the Golden Globe for this performance.

Paul Mescal disappointed me as William Shakespeare. I've seen movies where I loved this actor, but here he doesn't convey anything to me. He's a bland character who doesn't convince me. I haven't seen his work in Gladiator 2, but I've read negative reviews of his performance in that film. Maybe he's running out of ideas. Here he comes across as bland.

I didn't like it as much as I expected, but I'd rather they give the Oscar to this film than to Paul Thomas Anderson's communist propaganda.

No puedo negar que el final era muy bonito y que sin duda pretendía transmitir tristeza, aceptación y resignación, pero no sentí nada de eso porque se centra tanto en la belleza del encuadre que se olvida de hacerme sentir algo.

No hay nada malo en que sea una película de ritmo lento y una historia más íntima. Eso no me importa; al contrario, es el tipo de película que me gusta, pero esta no me cautivó, no me llegó, me pareció todo muy artificial, como si se esforzaran demasiado por hacer algo que pareciera muy trascendente, y me dejó frío. Nada que ver con Sueño de Trenes, por ejemplo. Esa película sí aborda una historia humana, sencilla, con un ritmo lento, también utilizando la naturaleza como telón de fondo, pero esa es una obra maestra que llega al alma. Esa es mi favorita en los premios, aunque sé que se irá con las manos vacías.

Lo único que me gusta de Hamnet es la interpretación de Jessie Buckley como la esposa de William Shakespeare. Pero, en serio, ¿por qué demonios la llamaron Agnes? La esposa de Shakespeare y madre de Hamnet se llamaba Anne Hathaway, sí, igual que la famosa actriz de Hollywood. Buckley se entrega por completo a su personaje; ella es la verdadera protagonista y se esfuerza en cada escena por transmitir su dolor por la muerte de su único hijo. Estoy seguro de que es la favorita para el Óscar, ya que ha ganado el Globo de Oro por este trabajo.
