A monarchical comedy
This year I've watched a lot of Spanish series, and although I wasn't particularly keen to watch this one, every now and then you have to watch a comedy, especially if it's marketed as a satire of the Spanish monarchy, because it deals with current issues. So I plucked up the courage to delve into this universe with a fictional king and his daughter. Another thing that encouraged me to watch it is that one of its creators is Diego San José, the same person behind the trilogy Vota Juan, Celeste, and Yakarta, which I reviewed recently.
The series tackles the subject with humor, while also criticizing the monarchy. There is a large sector of the population that is republican and wants to see the end of the constitutional monarchy. Monarchies are no longer what they were in centuries past, when kings defined the course of their kingdoms and, therefore, of the subjects who were born and lived under that system. Since the middle of the last century, most existing monarchies have been subject to public scrutiny and scandals that are increasingly taking their toll.
The series tells the story of a fictional king of Spain in the present day, Alfonso XVI, who is embroiled in a corruption scandal and is forced by pressure to abdicate, but first takes a break in Latin America to see if the people will forget him. Obviously, this is based on what happened to the father of the current king, who had to cede the crown to his son for similar reasons. In the series, the king has only one daughter, who must take over the crown, but she is more focused on enjoying her life and the privileges she has. Partying, having sex, and not worrying about how she will end up, since she has everything.
Este año he visto muchas series españolas y, aunque no me apetecía mucho ver esta, de vez en cuando hay que ver alguna comedia, sobre todo si se vende como una sátira de la monarquía española, porque trata temas de actualidad. Por eso, me armé de valor para adentrarme en este universo con un rey ficticio y su hija. Otra cosa que me animó a verla es que uno de sus creadores es Diego San José, el mismo que está detrás de la trilogía Vota Juan, Celeste y Yakarta, que reseñé hace poco.
La serie aborda el tema con humor, al tiempo que critica la monarquía. Hay un amplio sector de la población que es republicano y quiere ver el fin de la monarquía constitucional. Las monarquías ya no son como en siglos pasados, cuando los reyes definían el rumbo de sus reinos y, por tanto, de los súbditos que nacían y vivían bajo ese sistema. Desde mediados del siglo pasado, la mayoría de las monarquías existentes han sido objeto de escrutinio público y de escándalos que cada vez les pasan más factura.
La serie cuenta la historia de un rey ficticio de España en la actualidad, un tal Alfonso XVI, que se ve envuelto en un escándalo de corrupción y se ve obligado por la presión a abdicar, pero antes se va a tomar un descanso en Latinoamérica para ver si el pueblo lo olvida. Evidentemente, esto se basa en lo que le ocurrió al padre del actual rey, que tuvo que ceder la corona a su hijo por motivos similares. En la serie, el rey solo tiene una hija, que debe tomar las riendas de la corona, pero ella está más centrada en disfrutar de su vida y de los privilegios que tiene. De fiesta, follando y sin preocuparse de cómo llegará al final, ya que lo tiene todo.
This is where the fun part of the story comes in, because this spoiled and capricious girl who lives in her own bubble must now, while her father keeps a low profile, take charge of the affairs of the monarchy, attend events, meet with politicians, etc. To achieve this, she will need the help of someone who is aware of everything, and that is where the character named Guillermo comes in, who will act as her advisor.
This clash between two such different personalities, in addition to their age difference, creates a huge generation gap. Guillermo doesn't want to do this job, but he does it in exchange for something he cares about and out of loyalty to the monarchy. The two form an atypical story of two people who are opposites in everything, but who end up becoming good friends and helping each other.
I expected it to be a bit more biting satire, but it actually falls short. There were a couple of episodes that started to bore me because the criticism and humor become lighter. Although it's still entertaining, it has its funny moments.
Part of its success is due to the two main characters. Anna Castillo fits the role of Princess Pilar, who needs to mature, very well. In the first episode, she's quite annoying, but as the episodes progress, we start to like her more. The other protagonist is veteran actor Ernesto Alterio, who plays Guillermo. Between the two of them, they drive the story forward and have great chemistry. This complicity is necessary to convey it on screen.
I didn't know if there would be a second season, so I looked it up while writing this and discovered that it has been renewed. So next year we will continue to see Pilar, now as queen, trying to change both herself and the fate of her monarchy.

Aquí es donde entra la parte divertida de la historia, porque esta chica mimada y caprichosa que vive en su propia burbuja ahora debe, mientras su padre mantiene un perfil bajo, hacerse cargo de los asuntos de la monarquía, asistir a eventos, reunirse con políticos, etc. Para lograrlo, necesitará la ayuda de alguien que esté al tanto de todo, y ahí es donde entra el personaje llamado Guillermo, que actuará como su asesor.
Este choque entre dos personalidades tan diferentes, además de su diferencia de edad, crea una gran brecha generacional. Guillermo no quiere hacer este trabajo, pero lo hace a cambio de algo que le importa y por lealtad a la monarquía. Los dos forman una historia atípica de dos personas que son opuestas en todo, pero que acaban convirtiéndose en buenos amigos y ayudándose mutuamente.
Esperaba que fuera una sátira un poco más mordaz, pero en realidad se queda corta. Hubo un par de episodios que empezaron a aburrirme porque las críticas y el humor se vuelven más ligeros. Aunque sigue siendo entretenida, tiene sus momentos divertidos.
Parte de su éxito se debe a los dos personajes principales. Anna Castillo encaja muy bien en el papel de la princesa Pilar, que necesita madurar. En el primer episodio, resulta bastante molesta, pero a medida que avanzan los episodios, empieza a gustarnos más. El otro protagonista es el veterano actor Ernesto Alterio, que interpreta a Guillermo. Entre los dos, impulsan la historia y tienen una gran química. Esta complicidad es necesaria para transmitirla en la pantalla.
No sabía si habría una segunda temporada, así que lo busqué mientras escribía esto y descubrí que ha sido renovada. Así que el año que viene seguiremos viendo a Pilar, ahora como reina, tratando de cambiar tanto a sí misma como el destino de su monarquía.

Esto si que es comedia jajaja me recuerda la monarquía actual donde el viejo rey hizo tratados con los moros y ahora el que está no sirve para nada, ni defiende España. Es decir para que está? Para cobrar, vivir del pueblo, pero bueno el muñeco de torta hace lo mismo. mejor me callo jajaja
La actuación de la chica como princesa no está mal, pobre España, así en poco tiempo no queda nada... y bueno... me voy a Italia!🤣

jajaja esta es comedia ligera, fue agradable de ver, n hay varias series que me han sorprendido porque lograron engancharme, por allí tengo otro par de series españolas por publicar que me gustaron.
Que dirían los viejos reyes de siglos pasados si lograran ver en que se han convertido las monarquías que en otras épocas eran tan temidas.

Hey, I haven't seen it yet, but you just made me curious. It's a shame to read that it falls a little short on satire, because the theme of the monarchy makes for a lot of "bad temper" and making a point of everything, but hey... being 30 minute chapters, I still give it a chance for those dead moments in which you don't want to think much. Para mi gusto se pone muy suave, pero es entretenida y también tiene su lado de drama y reflexión. Es eso, una serie para no pensar mucho y pasar el tiempo. para ver cuando uno quiere descansar de ver producciones mas profundas.
