[Movie] Humane - Someone has to die

Okay, let's talk about a movie I saw last year, but, like many others, I forgot to post about it. Caitlin Cronenberg is the youngest daughter of the great David Cronenberg. If you've known me for a while, you'll know I'm quite a Cronenberg fan. His son, Brandon, has already captivated me with his films, in which a certain influence from his father is also evident, and when this film was released, being by David's youngest and favorite daughter, I was very eager to see it.

She has primarily dedicated herself to photography, working for reputable publications, and has also directed music videos. Photography is her forte, but she wanted to experiment with filmmaking. It's clear that, like her father, she likes to tackle themes that some might consider controversial, but in this first feature film, I noticed that she differs from her father by imbuing the story with a darker humor.

The film's premise unfolds in a dystopian future where, to maintain population control and ensure the survival of our species, some choose to die voluntarily. There's a whole process and protocol in place, people in charge of enforcing the rules, whoever they may be, so once you decide to do it and commit, there's no going back.

The filmmaker chooses to center the story on an upper-class family; one of its members is even a key figure in this project. This is where the film's most amusing aspect lies, because when this happens to someone close to you, a loved one, or even yourself, your perspective on the situation changes completely.

We could classify the film within the horror genre, but I felt that the filmmaker also satirizes selfish interests, our selfishness; hence the title, Human. We are human, with virtues and flaws, but undoubtedly, our survival instinct is very strong, and like all humans, to protect ourselves we can do very bad things, regardless of whether those affected are our own family. There are some truly funny situations, especially when, within that family unit, it seems they have to choose someone who will die within a certain timeframe. The story spirals into a web of recriminations, conspiracies, and a brutal war where everyone wants to kill each other. Because someone has to die; the law is the law.

Exploring our dark side, but labeling it with dark humor, makes the film quite digestible. I enjoyed it; of course, it's not a memorable film, but we shouldn't be so harsh. I think that, for the first fiction film by Cronenberg's youngest daughter, it's very good. I hope she decides to pursue more film projects. Although Cronenberg already has his legacy and his son Brandon is on his way to becoming a cult filmmaker like his father someday, I would love to see another Cronenberg follow in his father's footsteps, while also contributing their own style.

Bueno, hablemos de una película que vi el año pasado, pero, como a muchos otros, se me olvidó publicarla. Caitlin Cronenberg es la hija menor del gran David Cronenberg. Si me conocen desde hace tiempo, sabrán que soy bastante fan de Cronenberg. Su hijo Brandon ya me ha cautivado con sus películas, en las que también se nota cierta influencia de su padre, y cuando se estrenó esta película, siendo de la hija menor y favorita de David, tenía muchísimas ganas de verla.

Se ha dedicado principalmente a la fotografía, trabajando para buenas publicaciones, y también ha dirigido videoclips. La fotografía es su fuerte, pero quería experimentar con el cine. Es evidente que, como su padre, le gusta abordar temas que algunos podrían considerar controvertidos, pero en este primer largometraje, noté que se diferencia de su padre al dotar a la historia de un humor más negro.

La premisa de la película se desarrolla en un futuro distópico donde, para mantener el control de la población y asegurar la supervivencia de nuestra especie, algunos eligen morir voluntariamente. Existe todo un proceso y protocolo, personas encargadas de hacer cumplir las reglas, sean quienes sean, así que una vez que decides hacerlo y te comprometes, no hay vuelta atrás.

El cineasta opta por centrar la historia en una familia de clase alta; uno de sus miembros es incluso una figura importante dentro de este proyecto. Aquí reside el aspecto más divertido de la película, porque cuando esto le sucede a alguien cercano, a un ser querido, o incluso a uno mismo, la perspectiva de la situación cambia por completo.

Podríamos clasificar la película dentro del género de terror, pero sentí que el cineasta también satiriza los intereses egoístas, nuestro egoísmo; de ahí el título, Humano. Somos humanos, con virtudes y defectos, pero sin duda, nuestro instinto de supervivencia es muy fuerte, y como todos los humanos, para protegernos podemos hacer cosas muy malas, sin importar si los afectados son nuestra propia familia. Hay situaciones realmente divertidas, sobre todo cuando, dentro de ese núcleo familiar, parece que deben elegir a alguien que morirá en un plazo determinado. La historia se convierte en una espiral de recriminaciones, conspiraciones y una guerra encarnizada donde todos quieren matarse entre sí. Porque alguien tiene que morir; la ley es la ley.

Explorar nuestro lado oscuro, pero etiquetándolo con humor negro, hace que la película sea bastante digerible. La disfruté; claro que no es una película memorable, pero no deberíamos ser tan duros. Creo que, para ser la primera película de ficción de la hija menor de Cronenberg, es muy buena. Espero que decida realizar más proyectos cinematográficos. Aunque Cronenberg ya tiene su legado y su hijo Brandon va camino de convertirse algún día en un cineasta de culto como su padre, me encantaría que otro Cronenberg siguiera también los pasos de su padre, aportando a la vez su propio estilo.
