[Movie] Kika

I found Kika to be an entertaining film. What begins as a story about ordinary people, where love blossoms and there's a touch of infidelity, transforms into an exploration of the world of fetishes. Although it's not a thriller or anything like that, it addresses the topic of prostitution, especially domination, in a rather delicate way.

The film is Belgian, and I'm not familiar with its director, Alexe Poukine. Looking up her filmography online, I discovered that this is her first feature film. So, being a debut, I'm being quite lenient in my assessment. If you've followed my film reviews, you know I love debut films, as they establish the foundation of the filmmaker's ideas and style. We'll have to keep an eye on her career and be on the lookout for her next films.

The film doesn't intend to judge prostitution; I believe it's completely legal in Belgium. Prostitution is one of the oldest practices in the world. Of course, there's a dark side, where people are exploited, but also a positive side, where some do it for money and do very well. These days, millions of women and men (more women, of course) sell sexual content through social media or have accounts on OnlyFans and similar sites; some stream live, etc. Sex always sells.

I find it positive that the director doesn't judge his characters. I detest it when filmmakers try to give moral lessons. Fortunately, that doesn't happen here. The story addresses the difficult life that Kika, a social worker, faces after 18 years of marriage, with a daughter, etc., when fate forces her to fend for herself, with many expenses, homeless, and working for a low wage. She decides to try selling her used underwear, and then things get complicated.

Here we'll find many strange paraphilias, but they really exist. For example, it's true that some men like to buy used women's underwear. There's quite a bit of money in that niche. Similarly, there are those who have a fetish for being humiliated, insulted, or spat on. Others want to be treated like babies, dressed in diapers, and things like that; something strange for ordinary people like many of us, but it exists, and even that executive, good neighbor, very serious man, can have strange fetishes. The important thing is that these things are always done with feeling and don't cross the line into illegality. As long as that is respected, everyone can do what they want with their intimate and sexual life.

It's with all these fetishes that the story becomes quite funny. Some scenes can be a bit long, but I think the director's intention was to provoke laughter by telling a story that many might consider scandalous. Those parts that can provoke laughter work because they also recount something painful. That's why, in the final part, the protagonist makes a decision that will resonate with many of the clients who ask him to feel pain: to break down in order to free himself. That part is fundamental in his process of personal rebirth.

I was impressed by Manon Clavel's performance. This is the first time I've seen this actress, and I liked her naturalness. She's completely different from traditional beauty standards. She's an ordinary woman, attractive of course, but not dazzling, which makes her character more believable. For this role, she was nominated for a César Award, the French equivalent of the Oscars.

I started watching this film without much enthusiasm, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I recommend you see it; steer clear of mainstream American cinema and give European films a chance.

Me pareció que Kika era una película entretenida. Lo que comienza como una historia sobre gente común, donde florece el amor y hay un poco de infidelidad, se transforma en una exploración del mundo de los fetiches. Aunque no se trata de un thriller ni nada parecido, aborda el tema de la prostitución, especialmente la dominación, de una manera bastante delicada.

La película es belga y no conozco a su directora, Alexe Poukine. Buscando su filmografía en internet, descubrí que este es su primer largometraje. Así que, al tratarse de una ópera prima, soy bastante indulgente en mi valoración. Si han seguido mis reseñas de cine, saben que me encantan las óperas primas, ya que sientan las bases de las ideas y el estilo del cineasta. Tendremos que seguir su carrera y estar atentos a sus próximas películas.

La película no pretende juzgar la prostitución; creo que es completamente legal en Bélgica. La prostitución es una de las prácticas más antiguas del mundo. Claro que existe un lado oscuro, donde la gente es explotada, pero también un lado positivo, donde hay quienes lo hacen por dinero y les va muy bien. Hoy en día, millones de mujeres y hombres (más mujeres, por supuesto) venden contenido sexual a través de las redes sociales o tienen cuentas en OnlyFans y sitios similares; hay quienes transmiten en vivo, etc. El sexo siempre vende.

El hecho de que el director no juzgue a sus personajes me parece positivo. Detesto cuando los cineastas intentan dar lecciones de moral. Afortunadamente, aquí no sucede. La historia aborda la difícil vida que Kika, una trabajadora social, enfrenta tras 18 años de matrimonio, con una hija, etc., cuando el destino la obliga a valerse por sí misma, con muchos gastos, sin hogar y trabajando con un salario bajo. Decide intentar vender su ropa interior usada, y entonces las cosas se complican.

Aquí encontraremos muchas parafilias extrañas, pero existen de verdad. Por ejemplo, es cierto que a algunos hombres les gusta comprar ropa interior femenina usada. Hay bastante dinero en ese nicho. De igual manera, hay quienes tienen un fetiche por ser humillados, insultados o escupidos. Otros quieren ser tratados como bebés, vestidos con pañales y cosas por el estilo; algo extraño para la gente común y corriente como muchos de nosotros, pero existe, e incluso ese ejecutivo, buen vecino, hombre muy serio, puede tener fetiches extraños. Lo importante es que estas cosas siempre se hagan con sentimiento y no crucen la línea de la ilegalidad. Mientras se respete eso, cada quien puede hacer lo que quiera con su vida íntima y sexual.

Es con todos estos fetiches que la historia se vuelve bastante divertida. Algunas escenas pueden ser un poco largas, pero creo que la intención del director era provocar risas contando una historia que muchos podrían considerar escandalosa. Esas partes que pueden provocar risa funcionan porque también relatan algo doloroso. Por eso, en la parte final, el protagonista toma una decisión que resonará en muchos de los clientes que le piden que sienta dolor: derrumbarse para liberarse. Esa parte es fundamental en su proceso de renacimiento personal.

Me impresionó la actuación de Manon Clavel. Es la primera vez que veo a esta actriz y me gustó su naturalidad. Está completamente alejada de los cánones de belleza tradicionales. Es una mujer común, atractiva por supuesto, pero no deslumbrante, lo que hace que su personaje sea más creíble. Por este papel, fue nominada al Premio César, el equivalente francés de los Óscar.

Empecé a ver esta película sin mucho entusiasmo y resultó ser una grata sorpresa. Les recomiendo que la vean; aléjense del cine estadounidense más comercial y denle una oportunidad al cine europeo.
