[Movie] Nitram

I remember when I saw the film Snowtown, based on the true story of a terrible Australian killer. The film shocked me with its tone and violence. It was quite raw, and its characters conveyed a repulsive hostility. From that moment on, I was captivated by that filmmaker who also dazzled many at the time, the Australian Justin Kurzel.

True History of the Kelly Gang, The Order, and the miniseries The Narrow Road to the Deep North are other productions by the filmmaker that I have reviewed previously. Although Snowtown is the one I liked the most. Nitram was one of the films I was very eager to see, since it was never released in theaters in my country and for a long time I found it difficult to find.

The filmmaker returns to tell us a story from his home country. It is a story based on a horrific true event that shocked Australia in the 1990s. The event became known as the Port Arthur Massacre. I recommend that you don't look up any information about it online so that you can better enjoy the film. Kurzel employs a slow and deliberate narrative, much like in Snowtown. This is why it's not a very commercial film, nor one that will appeal to a wide audience. In these times where immediacy is everything, it seems that films that tell their story slowly are dismissed as boring. I don't deny that some films become tedious due to their pacing, but in this case, the filmmaker has the talent to maintain the viewer's attention and pique their interest in learning more about the character of Nitram.

Because the film deals with the life of Nitram, a young man with a seemingly normal family, but who suffers from mental health issues and has been medicated since childhood. Nitram's worldview is different; he's like a grown-up child who suffers rejection and ridicule, forcing him to isolate himself, while the only people who love him distance themselves from his life. Is he a psychopath? Is he integrated into society? The film raises these questions about his mental and personal struggles.

Violence is not explicitly depicted here. The filmmaker succeeds in making the atmosphere palpable, creating a sense of unease, a contained violence that could erupt at any moment, but without depicting it graphically. There is no room for sensationalism. The victims of the real tragedy are treated with respect because the events themselves are not shown.

I started searching online and discovered that what happened in real life led to changes in some gun laws in that country, although even today it remains a subject of political debate, with positions for and against. I can't go into much detail because I only did a quick search, but if we consider this tragedy, if more people had been armed that day, in that place, they could have done something and prevented more deaths.

While the permissive sale of guns in the United States can lead to unbalanced individuals committing massacres in schools, it is true that the more people are armed, the greater their capacity to counteract such acts. This is just my personal opinion. There will always be those who oppose gun ownership, etc. I live in a country where we don't have the right to carry firearms, and that's why the government and criminals have us under their control.

I must mention the excellent performance of actor Caleb Landry Jones, whose distinctive features make him perfect for the role of Nitram. The beautiful actress Essie Davis also appears; she's over fifty, but still gorgeous. Some viewers might remember her from the horror film The Babadook.

I think Nitram hasn't received as much attention as some of this director's other films, but that's why I want to recommend it. Look it up, watch it, and leave me a comment with your opinion.

Desde ese momento, quedé cautivado por ese cineasta que también deslumbró a muchos en aquel entonces, el australiano Justin Kurzel.

Nitram era una de las películas que tenía muchas ganas de ver, ya que nunca se estrenó en los cines de mi país y durante mucho tiempo me resultó difícil encontrarla.

El cineasta regresa para contarnos una historia de su país de origen. Es una historia basada en un horrible suceso real que conmocionó a Australia en la década de 1990. El suceso se conoció como la Masacre de Port Arthur. Les recomiendo que no busquen información al respecto en internet para que puedan disfrutar mejor de la película. Kurzel utiliza una narrativa lenta y pausada, al igual que en Snowtown. Por eso no es una película muy comercial, ni una que vaya a ver el gran público. En estos tiempos donde la inmediatez lo es todo, parece que las películas que cuentan su historia lentamente se tachan de aburridas. No niego que algunas películas se vuelven aburridas por su ritmo, pero en este caso, el cineasta tiene el talento suficiente para mantener la atención del espectador y despertar su interés por saber más sobre el personaje de Nitram.

Porque la película trata sobre la vida de Nitram, un joven con una familia aparentemente normal, pero que sufre problemas mentales y ha tenido que ser medicado desde muy pequeño. La visión del mundo de Nitram es diferente; es como un niño grande que sufre rechazo y burla, lo que lo obliga a aislarse, mientras que las únicas personas que lo aman se alejan de su vida. ¿Es un psicópata? ¿Está integrado? La película plantea estas preguntas sobre sus problemas mentales y personales.

Aquí no se muestra la violencia explícitamente. El cineasta logra que la atmósfera sea palpable, creando una sensación de inquietud, una violencia contenida que podría estallar en cualquier momento, pero sin representarla gráficamente. No hay lugar para el sensacionalismo. Las víctimas de la tragedia real son tratadas con respeto porque los hechos en sí no se muestran.

Comencé a buscar en internet y descubrí que lo sucedido en la vida real provocó cambios en algunas leyes de armas en ese país, aunque incluso hoy sigue siendo un tema de debate político, con posturas a favor y en contra. No puedo profundizar mucho al respecto porque solo hice una investigación rápida, pero si consideramos esta tragedia, si más personas hubieran estado armadas ese día, en ese lugar, podrían haber hecho algo y evitado más muertes.

Si bien la venta permisiva de armas en Estados Unidos puede llevar a que personas desequilibradas cometan masacres en escuelas, es cierto que cuanta más gente esté armada, mayor será su capacidad para contrarrestar tales actos. Esta es solo mi opinión personal. Siempre habrá quienes se opongan a la posesión de armas, etc. Vivo en un país donde no tenemos derecho a portarlas, y por eso el gobierno y los criminales nos tienen bajo su control.

No quiero dejar de mencionar la excelente actuación del actor Caleb Landry Jones, cuyas características distintivas lo hacen perfecto para interpretar a Nitram. La bella actriz Essie Davis también participa; tiene más de cincuenta años, pero sigue siendo preciosa. Algunos espectadores quizás la recuerden de la película de terror The Babadook.
