The Cold War is a period that has been the subject of many productions lately. It was a period in which Russia and the United States engaged in an espionage race, monitoring and controlling each other, always in search of information, secrets, technological advances, and weapons. There are countless films and television series that have entertainingly captured all the paranoia of trying to outdo each other.

Ponies, a series that tackles the subject in a rather entertaining way, was recently released. Bea and Twila are assigned to two CIA agents stationed at the US embassy in the Soviet Union. Everything seems to be going wonderfully, until, mysteriously, both husbands die in a plane crash. That's when the two widows decide to get jobs as spies. Although neither of them has any experience or training, they manage to convince the director to give them the opportunity to continue with the mission.

The charm of all this lies in putting two completely opposite characters to work as a team. Bea is of Russian descent, speaks the language perfectly, and is a woman with more class and better education. Twila, on the other hand, is a disaster. She is a woman from a small town in the heart of the United States, a foul-mouthed redneck who knows absolutely nothing about being a secretary, the job she has to do at the embassy as a cover. She may not be very intelligent, but she is tenacious and courageous when it comes to solving problems.

The interaction between these characters and the group of secondary characters they have to deal with and work with on a daily basis is what makes for some very entertaining situations. It's a series to have a good time with, not an in-depth study of espionage. Here we are going to have fun with the adventures of these women in the heart of the Soviet Union, trying to be real spies.

The villain of the series is Andrei, a KGB agent who is rapidly rising through the ranks. His presence instills fear, with a cold, murderous gaze. He is the typical Russian who, if you encounter him, you would rather cross the street than look him in the eye. Bea's mission is to get involved with him to try to get him to work for the Americans, but what they don't know is that he is more dangerous than he seems and has his own plans to reach the top of the system in which he works. I think they were very inspired by Putin to create this character.

There are several subplots. The one about the guy who passes information to the Americans, the death of his sister, which is related to many other deaths of beautiful prostitutes. In addition to a double agent inside the American embassy who works for the Soviets. Conspiracies, twists, and surprises typical of this spy series.

So far, the second season has not been confirmed, but the series has been well received, so it's only a matter of time before its renewal is announced, as there are ultimately many revelations that deserve to be developed in another batch of episodes. By the way, Emilia Clarke, who plays Bea, is also a producer on the series. Everyone knows her; she's the queen of Game of Thrones. The other lead is Haley Lu Richardson, and the two make a good pair. I've only seen this actress in three previous productions: The White Lotus, Unpregnant, and Split.

Fue un período en el que Rusia y Estados Unidos se enzarzaron en una carrera de espionaje, vigilándose y controlándose mutuamente, siempre en busca de información, secretos, avances tecnológicos y armas. Hay innumerables películas y series de televisión que han capturado de forma entretenida toda la paranoia de intentar superarse unos a otros.

Recientemente se estrenó Ponies, una serie que aborda el tema de una manera bastante entretenida. Bea y Twila son asignadas a dos agentes de la CIA que están destinados en la embajada de Estados Unidos en la Unión Soviética. Todo parece ir de maravilla, hasta que, misteriosamente, ambos maridos mueren en un accidente aéreo. Es entonces cuando las dos viudas deciden conseguir trabajo como espías. Aunque ninguna de las dos tiene experiencia ni formación, logran convencer al director para que les dé la oportunidad de continuar con la misión.

El encanto de todo esto reside en poner a dos personajes completamente opuestos a trabajar en equipo. Bea es de ascendencia rusa, habla el idioma a la perfección y es una mujer con más clase y mejor educación. Twila, por otro lado, es un desastre. Es una mujer de un pequeño pueblo del corazón de Estados Unidos, una paleta con la boca sucia que no sabe absolutamente nada sobre ser secretaria, el trabajo que tiene que hacer en la embajada como tapadera. Puede que no sea muy inteligente, pero es tenaz y valiente a la hora de resolver problemas.

La interacción entre estos personajes y el grupo de personajes secundarios con los que tienen que lidiar y trabajar a diario es lo que provoca situaciones muy entretenidas. Es una serie para pasar un buen rato, no un estudio profundo sobre el espionaje. Aquí nos vamos a divertir con las aventuras de estas mujeres en plena Unión Soviética, intentando ser auténticas espías.

Creo que se inspiraron mucho en Putin para crear este personaje.

Hay varias subtramas. La del chico que pasa información a los estadounidenses, la muerte de su hermana, que está relacionada con otras muchas muertes de prostitutas guapas. Además de un agente doble dentro de la embajada estadounidense que trabaja para los soviéticos. Conspiraciones, giros y sorpresas típicas de esta serie de espionaje.

Hasta ahora, la segunda temporada no ha sido confirmada, pero la serie ha tenido una buena acogida, por lo que es solo cuestión de tiempo que se anuncie su renovación, ya que al final hay muchas revelaciones que merecen ser desarrolladas en otra tanda de episodios. Por cierto, Emilia Clarke, que interpreta a Bea, también es productora de la serie. Todo el mundo la conoce; es la reina de Juego de Tronos. La otra protagonista es Haley Lu Richardson, y las dos forman una buena pareja. Solo he visto a esta actriz en tres producciones anteriores: The White Lotus, Unpregnant y Split.
