The master Ryuichi Hiroki is considered one of the most important Japanese filmmakers today. At 67, he is still active and has more than fifty films in his filmography. He is characterized by his deep approach to the characters that star in his films. Something that we can notice in this film, where the conflictive relationship that the protagonists have maintained for years, shows the most dramatic and human aspect of a love that in principle was impossible.
An important fact about the filmmaker is that he began his career in the seventies making Japanese softcore porn films, a very popular genre in that country and which gained great recognition. Some of these films were made under a pseudonym. After switching to conventional cinema, he has not left aside the erotic charge in his stories.
Rider or Die is a love story, but it has many erotic scenes that may not appeal to today's conservative audiences. I loved them, they added more realism to the plot and from my point of view they are totally justified.
I warn you that we are going to suffer along with the two protagonist girls. Tragedy, misfortunes, bad decisions and unrequited love are all over the movie. Can you love someone so much that you wouldn't mind dying for her? The relationship between the two is so complex that I found it difficult to bear so much pain, because the film is long and, therefore, the suffering becomes unbearable.

El maestro Ryuichi Hiroki es considerado uno de los más importantes cineastas japonés de la actualidad. Con 67 años todavía se mantiene activo y tiene en su filmografía más de cincuenta películas. Se caracteriza por abordar profundamente los personajes que protagonizan sus películas. Algo que podemos notar en este film, donde la conflictiva relación que por años mantienen las protagonistas, muestra el aspecto más dramático y humano de un amor al principio imposible.
Un dato importante sobre el cineasta es que comenzó su carrera en los años setenta haciendo películas porno softcore japonesas, un género que fue muy popular en ese país y obtuvo gran reconocimiento. Algunos de esos film los hizo bajo un pseudónimo. Tras pasarse al cine convencional, no ha dejado de lado una carga erótica en sus historias.
Rider or Die es una historia de amor, pero tiene muchas escenas eróticas que puede que no le agrade al publico conservador de la actualidad. A mí me encantaron, le aportaron mayor realismo al argumento y desde mi punto de vista están totalmente justificadas.
Les advierto que vamos a sufrir junto a las dos chicas protagonistas. La tragedia, las desgracias, las malas decisiones y el amor no correspondido abarcan todo el film. ¿Se puede amar tanto a alguien que no te importaría morir por ella? La relación de ambas es tan compleja que tanto dolor me resulto difícil de soportar, porque la película es extensa en duración y por lo tanto el sufrimiento se hace inaguantable.
What is the plot of Ride or Die?
Rei Nagasawa is a young woman who has a financially stable family, a job and lives with her partner, another woman older than her, whom she has known since she was a teenager. But Rai is still in love with Nanae Shinoda, a former high school classmate, but they never had a relationship and parted on bad terms since Nanae was heterosexual. Several years have passed and they are now adults. One day Rai receives a call from Nanae, who is married and is the victim of severe beatings by her husband. Rai makes the terrible decision to kill Nanae's husband. From that moment on, both girls must flee from the police. Together they will have to face the obstacles that arise, and the relationship between them will be full of internal conflicts. Rai's main concern will be to keep Nanae safe, even above her own life. What will be the fate of these two women? Will Rai be able to save Nanae? Does love justify all the terrible actions? What is Nanae afraid of? Does happiness exist for these two unfortunate women?

The beginning of the film is very powerful. It introduces us directly and crudely to the event that triggers the whole story. This is the magic of the veteran filmmaker, who knows he must hook the viewer in the first sequences and then take as much time as possible to develop each of the characters.
Rai and Nanae's entire story as high school teenagers is told through flashbacks. With delicacy and beauty we see the first day they meet and how Rai falls completely in love with her. The two establish a friendship, but Rai, who seems to fall unhealthily in love, is the one who will bear the brunt of the suffering.
Rai's character becomes my favorite, because her love is pure. Always willing to help Nanae. Always looking to support her, even if it means sacrificing things in his own life. What Rai loves most is Nanae. But it will be a difficult love to be reciprocated as he deserves.
On the contrary, I found Nanae's character a bit exploitative and cruel. Although time will show us that she has also suffered all these years and there are things that were never said and hidden.
Both characters must flee after committing the crime. The media spread the news and write horrible things about the two girls. During that long journey, there will be obstacles, but Rai, who is the stronger of the two, will always be willing to sacrifice herself and protect Nanae.
Nanae's ambiguity in deciding to accept a relationship with Rai will be the cause of constant fights, arguments and conflicts between them. At all times Rai puts Nanae's interests before her own. He has been like this for years and at any moment all the accumulated pain will not be able to be sustained, causing the emotional collapse.
Long emotional scenes that will make us feel the suffering of the two women. A pain that not even the moments of calm and love will be able to repress. The two women in the story seem destined to live in suffering for life.
El inicio es potente. Directamente nos introduce de forma cruda en el hecho que desencadena toda la historia. Es la magia del veterano cineasta, que sabe que debe enganchar al espectador en las primeras secuencias para luego tomarse todo el tiempo posible en desarrollar cada personaje.
Toda la historia de Rai y Nanae como adolescentes en la secundaria, nos será contada por medio de flashbacks. Con delicadeza y belleza vemos el primer día que se conocieron y como Rai queda completamente enamorada de ella. Ambas establecen una amistad, pero Rai que parece enamorarse de forma enfermiza es la que llevara la mayor carga de sufrimiento.
El personaje de Rai se convierte en mi favorito, porque su amor es puro. Siempre dispuesta ayudar a Nanae. Siempre pendiente de apoyarla, aunque ello amerite que deba sacrificar cosas de su propia vida. Lo que más ama Rai es a Nanae. Pero será un amor difícil de que sea correspondido como merece.
Al contrario, el personaje de Nanae me resulto un poco aprovechado y cruel. Aunque el tiempo nos mostrara que ella también ha sufrido todos estos años, hay cosas que nunca se dijeron y ocultaron.
Ambos personajes deben huir después de cometer el crimen. Los medios de comunicación expanden la noticia y escriben cosas horrendas sobre las dos chicas. Durante ese largo viaje, se presentaran obstáculos, pero Rai quien es la más fuerte de las dos, siempre estará dispuesta a sacrificarse y proteger a Nanae.
La ambigüedad de Nanae en decidirse a aceptar una relación con Rai, será la causa de las constantes peleas, discusiones y conflictos entre ellas. En todo momento Rai sobrepone los intereses de Nane por encima de los suyos. Ha sido así durante años y en cualquier momento todo el dolor acumulado no podrá sostenerse más, causando el derrumbe emocional.
Largas escenas emotivas que nos hará sentir el sufrimiento de las dos mujeres. Un dolor que ni siquiera los momentos de calma y amor serán capaces de suprimir. Las dos mujeres del realto parecen destinadas a vivir en sufrimiento para toda la vida.
I liked the film, but the two hours and 22 minutes of running time seemed excessive. The filmmaker seems to want to cause us pain with his long scenes of high dramatic content. Also the erotic scenes are a bit long and emotionally charged, which made me exhausted by the end of the film. If that was the director's intention, with me he succeeded. Personally, I would have cut out many scenes.
The length, the story and a pace that gets slow can play against the film. I recommend it for those who have patience and are willing to dive into this wounding swamp of emotions.
I think for viewers in the LGBTQ+ community the conflicted relationship between Rai and Nanae can be suffocating and uncomfortable. Sometimes it is hard to understand this love that borders on obsession and has only caused harm to one of them.
It is a very Japanese film, with situations common within that culture. If you are a western viewer, you must have an open mind to understand facts and behaviors very different from what we see in Hollywood movies.
El film me gusto, pero me parecieron excesivas las dos horas y 22 minutos de duración. El cineasta parece querer causarnos dolor con sus largas escenas de alto contenido dramático. También las escenas eróticas son un poco largas y las mismas tienen una carga emocional que hicieron que yo terminara exhausto cuando finaliza el film. Si esa era la intención del director, lo ha logrado. Personalmente, yo hubiera recortado muchas escenas.
La duración, la historia y un ritmo que se vuelve lento pueden jugar en contra del film. Lo recomiendo para los que tengan paciencia y estén dispuestos a sumergirse en este pantano de emociones que te causaran heridas.
Creo que para espectadores de la comunidad LGBTQ+ puede resultar asfixiante e incómoda la conflictiva relación que mantienen Rai y Nanae. Por momentos es difícil entender ese amor que raya en la obsesión y que solo ha causado daño en una de ellas.
Es un film muy japonés, con situaciones comunes dentro de esa cultura. Si eres un espectador occidental, debes tener la mente abierta para entender hechos y comportamientos muy distintos a los que vemos en películas de Hollywood.
The chemistry between the two actresses is incredible. They are both unknown to me. Although one of them has a longer career, maybe I have seen her in a movie but I don't remember her. It happens to me with many Asian actors and actresses, I have a hard time learning the names and knowing if I have seen previous work. I suggest you look them up on IMDB if you want detailed information about them.
La química entre las dos actrices es increíble. Las dos son desconocidas para mí. Aunque una de ellas tiene una trayectoria más larga, quizás la he visto en algún film pero no la recuerdo. Me pasa con muchos actores y actrices asiáticos, es difícil para mí aprenderme los nombres y saber si he visto trabajos anteriores. Kiko Mizuhara plays Rai. A young woman who has spent her whole life in love with Nanae, whom she has not forgotten. When he receives the call for help, he will abandon the stability of his life, his girlfriend, his family, his job, everything. To go to the rescue of the woman he loves. The performance of this actress is amazing, the character is my favorite and the acting is masterful. Kiko Mizuhara, besides being an actress, is a model and a renowned fashion designer. La interpretación de esta actriz es increíble, el personaje es mi favorito y la actuación es magistral. Kiko Mizuhara además de actriz es modelo y diseñadora de modas reconocida. Ella es la que tiene mayor trayectoria en películas y programas de televisión en japonesa. Su padre es americano y ella nació en Texas pero desde la edad de dos años vive en Japón.
Honami Satô plays Nanae. The girl who, after separating from Rai when they were teenagers, is married to a wealthy but abusive man. She has spent her life trying to find happiness, unaware that it was always within her reach. Now she must confront the bad decisions of the past. The actress is phenomenal in her performance, forming together a beautiful and tragic couple. Excellent choice of the film's director. The actress' career is not so extensive, but since 2017 there seems to be a boost in her career and she worked in movies and miniseries in her country.
Honami Satô interpreta a Nanae. La chica que después de separase de Rai cuando eran adolescentes, ahora está casada con un hombre de buena posición, pero que la maltrata. Ella ha pasado su vida intentando encontrar la felicidad, sin saber que siempre la tuvo disponible. Ahora deberá afrontar las malas decisiones del pasado. La actriz es fenomenal es su interpretación, juntas conformar una hermosa y trágica pareja. Excelente elección del director de la película. La trayectoria de la actriz no es tan amplia, pero desde el 2017 parece haber un impulso en su carrera y trabajado en películas y mini series de su país.
Rider or Die is a drama of a great intensity that will not leave anyone who sees it indifferent. It is a beautiful story with a lot of sadness and crying, but true love comes with suffering. When we feel the thorns of love penetrating our skin is when we realize that we are truly in love. The extraordinary performances of the lead couple make this a remarkable and recommendable film.
I saw the movie a few days ago but I had to recover from the wounds it left me with in order to write this review and recommend it.

Rider or Die es un drama de una gran intensidad que no dejara indiferente a quien la vea. Es una hermosa historia con mucha tristeza y llanto, pero el amor verdadero viene acompañado de sufrimiento. Es cuando sentimos las espinas del amor penetrando en nuestra piel que nos percatamos que de verdad estamos enamorados. Unas extraordinarias actuaciones de la pareja protagonista hacen una obra recomendable.
Lo vi hace unos días pero tenía que recuperarme de las heridas que dejo en mí para poder escribir esta reseña y recomendarla.

Wow! Two hours and 22 minutes? That's quite a length movie.
The storyline is interesting and but the pursuit of love and freedom by the two protagonists seem intense, just by reading the review. How much more watching it?
