[Movie] Strange Darling

The only thing I knew about Strange Darling was that it had received quite a bit of coverage in specialized media last year. I always avoid spoilers, and it wasn't until I finally saw it that I could say I agreed with most of the critics and viewers who had given it positive reviews, because I loved it.

It has a frenetic opening, and from that moment on, it completely captivated me. The first thing I noticed was its aesthetic, which is very reminiscent of 1970s horror thrillers. A brilliant choice; just seeing that first sequence brought a smile to my face because it reminded me of a bunch of movies I used to watch when I rented VHS tapes at the video store.

Since its cinematography is so striking, I started researching who the director of photography was, and I was in for a big surprise. The actor Giovanni Ribisi was responsible for capturing that aesthetic. I was completely unaware that this actor also worked as a director of photography. Perhaps his name doesn't ring a bell, but if you look him up, you'll know who I'm talking about, as he has an extensive filmography, including James Cameron's Avatar films.

I'm not going to tell you much about the story, because the key to enjoying the film is knowing as little as possible about it, or letting yourself be guided by what you see in the trailer, which I like because it plays with mystery. I'll just say that a woman flees an apparent serial killer terrorizing a region of the United States and must fight for her life.

The story is told in chapters, but the chronological order is omitted, which gives the narrative a bit more dynamism and, of course, also helps reveal the plot twists and surprises. It uses the genre's clichés, and the non-linear narrative isn't exactly original either, but the film doesn't pretend to be anything more. The good thing is that this combination and the director's style work.

This is the second film by filmmaker J.T. Mollner. The first was Outlaws and Angels, which I haven't seen yet. I'm already looking for it, because I'm sure his style is already evident in it, and the story must have some good plot twists. It's a Western, but I have to find out where it's available in my country. Before these two films, the filmmaker had only made short films.

The director is already working on a new project, which will feature Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson. The success of Strange Darling has undoubtedly made it easier for him to take on new projects with larger budgets. He will also be working with actor Kyle Gallner on his new film. Gallner is one of the stars of Strange Darling, playing the man who pursues the beautiful young woman. I recently reviewed a film where Gallner also shines in his performance: Carolina Caroline.

Actress Willa Fitzgerald plays a woman whose story begins with a one-night stand and ends in a hunt that leaves a trail of death. Her performance is excellent and demonstrates several shifts in tone as the story unfolds.

Lo único que sabía de Strange Darling era que había recibido bastante cobertura en medios especializados el año pasado. Siempre evito los spoilers, y no fue hasta que finalmente la vi que pude decir que coincidía con la mayoría de los críticos y espectadores que le habían dado reseñas positivas, porque me encantó.

Tiene un comienzo frenético, y desde ese momento, me cautivó por completo. Lo primero que noté fue su estética, que recuerda mucho a los thrillers de terror de los setenta. Una elección brillante; solo con ver esa primera secuencia, se me dibujó una sonrisa en la cara porque me recordó a un montón de películas que veía cuando alquilaba cintas VHS en el videoclub.

Como su cinematografía es tan impactante, empecé a investigar quién era el director de fotografía, y me llevé una gran sorpresa. El actor Giovanni Ribisi fue el responsable de capturar esa estética. Desconocía por completo que este actor también trabajara como director de fotografía. Quizás su nombre no les suene, pero si lo buscan, sabrán de quién hablo, ya que tiene una extensa filmografía, incluyendo las películas de Avatar de James Cameron.

No les voy a contar mucho sobre la historia, porque la clave para disfrutar más de la película es saber lo menos posible sobre ella, o dejarse guiar por lo que se ve en el tráiler, que me gusta porque juega con el misterio. Solo diré que una mujer huye de un aparente asesino en serie que aterroriza una región de Estados Unidos, y debe luchar por su vida.

La historia se narra por capítulos, pero se omite el orden cronológico, lo que le da a la narración un poco más de dinamismo y, por supuesto, esto también ayuda a revelar los giros y sorpresas de la trama. Maneja los clichés del género, y la narrativa no lineal tampoco es precisamente original, pero la película no pretende nada más. Lo bueno es que esta combinación y el estilo del director funcionan.

Esta es la segunda película del cineasta J.T. Mollner. La primera fue Forajidos y Ángeles, que aún no he visto. Ya la estoy buscando, porque seguramente su estilo ya se aprecia en ella, y la historia debe tener buenos giros argumentales. Es un western, pero tengo que averiguar dónde está disponible en mi país. Antes de estas dos películas, el cineasta solo había realizado cortometrajes.

El director ya está trabajando en un nuevo proyecto, que contará con la actriz ganadora del Óscar Brie Larson. El éxito de Strange Darling sin duda le ha facilitado asumir nuevos proyectos con mayores presupuestos. También trabajará con el actor Kyle Gallner en su nueva película. Gallner es uno de los protagonistas de Strange Darling, interpretando al hombre que persigue a la bella joven. Hace poco reseñé una película donde Gallner también brilla en su actuación: Carolina Caroline.
