Espionage with a taste of Serrano ham
Surely we have all seen a story about spies at some point. The most popular ones are from the United States, with their agents on top-secret espionage missions. There are a large number of films and series on this subject, as well as from other countries where they have fairly strong intelligence agencies. The Israeli Mossad is another agency that is portrayed in films from that country as well as in Hollywood.
Now it's our turn to get to know Spanish spies through this series titled El Centro, because the agency in charge of intelligence in that country is the CNI (National Intelligence Center). I found the proposal interesting after finishing it, but I have the feeling that, even though it entertained me, it's a series that fell short of my expectations. The first episode is good enough to make the viewer want to see how it unfolds, but I feel that it lacks a certain spark.
Intrigue, secrets, betrayals, surveillance, infiltrations, wiretaps, danger, tension, politics, death—all of that should be part of a good spy story, and there is some of that here, but I feel like it falls short and lacks a little more tension at key moments. It's clear that they were inspired by the American format, you can tell they're emulating the style, but there are moments when you can tell they don't have such a big budget, because it lacks impact, even in the denouement, I felt it was too easy. It's not an action series, but even so, a more intense final conflict would have been better.
I don't remember where the hell I saw someone say that it's from the same production company as La Unidad, but I think that's wrong information. When I looked up who produces them, they are two different companies. The only thing they have in common is that both have been broadcast on Movistar+. Of course, it's inevitable to make a comparison because both deal with the themes of terrorism, espionage, etc., but for me, La Unidad seemed more entertaining and had a bigger budget. La Unidad is about a special unit of the Spanish national police fighting terrorism, and El Centro is about the Spanish intelligence service.
Seguro que todos hemos visto alguna vez una historia sobre espías. Las más populares son las de Estados Unidos, con sus agentes en misiones de espionaje ultrasecretas. Hay un montón de películas y series sobre este tema, así como de otros países donde tienen agencias de inteligencia bastante fuertes. El Mossad israelí es otra agencia que aparece en películas de ese país y en Hollywood.
Ahora nos toca conocer a los espías españoles a través de esta serie titulada El Centro, ya que la agencia encargada de la inteligencia en ese país es el CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia). La propuesta me ha parecido interesante tras terminarla, pero tengo la sensación de que, aunque me ha entretenido, es una serie que no ha estado a la altura de mis expectativas. El primer episodio es lo suficientemente bueno como para que el espectador quiera ver cómo se desarrolla, pero creo que le falta cierta chispa.
Intrigas, secretos, traiciones, vigilancia, infiltraciones, escuchas telefónicas, peligro, tensión, política, muerte... Todo eso debería formar parte de una buena historia de espías, y aquí hay algo de eso, pero creo que se queda corto y le falta un poco más de tensión en los momentos clave. Está claro que se han inspirado en el formato estadounidense, se nota que están emulando el estilo, pero hay momentos en los que se nota que no tienen un presupuesto tan grande, porque le falta impacto, incluso en el desenlace, me pareció demasiado fácil. No es una serie de acción, pero aun así, un conflicto final más intenso habría sido mejor.
No recuerdo dónde demonios vi a alguien decir que es de la misma productora que La Unidad, pero creo que es información errónea. Cuando busqué quién las produce, son dos empresas diferentes. Lo único que tienen en común es que ambas se han emitido en Movistar+. Por supuesto, es inevitable hacer una comparación porque ambas tratan temas como el terrorismo, el espionaje, etc., pero para mí, La Unidad me pareció más entretenida y con un presupuesto mayor. La Unidad trata sobre una unidad especial de la policía nacional española que lucha contra el terrorismo, y El Centro trata sobre el servicio de inteligencia español.
David Moreno is the main screenwriter, and I have already seen his work as a screenwriter in the series Nacho and El Inmortal, both of which I reviewed some time ago. The creator of the latter is the same as that of El Centro, so both have experience in successful and entertaining productions. However, perhaps because of the espionage theme and the attempt to emulate the Americans, it doesn't quite end up being a perfect series. Maybe if there is a second season, they will have a bigger budget and do something with greater visual impact.
The cast didn't quite gel for me; there are some actors whose characters lack depth and consistency in their actions. The only one I loved and enjoyed every time he appeared was the character Iñaki Olano, played by David Llorente. He is a sly, distrustful, bad-tempered, foul-mouthed old fox, telling everyone to fuck off. For me, he is the best character in this story, and that is entirely thanks to the actor. Now, the character I hated was the journalist Elsa, perhaps because she is a woke progressive character. I'm not making this up; she makes her position very clear from the first episode.
The character Michelín, who is the main character, is played by the actor Juan Diego Botto. He neither excited nor annoyed me. For the main character, his actions and reactions were bland, like eating a boiled egg without salt. I really hope that if they make another season, they improve the details and flaws in the story. I looked for information about its renewal and couldn't find anything, for the moment. Maybe they're waiting to see if it gets any recognition or to gauge the audience's response.
It's not a long season, only six episodes, so you can watch them two at a time. It's an acceptable product that won't blow you away, but if you want to watch some espionage with a Spanish flavor, it's fine. This way we see something different from the many CIA super agents in American productions.

David Moreno es el guionista principal, y ya he visto su trabajo como guionista en las series Nacho y El Inmortal, ambas reseñadas por mí hace algún tiempo. El creador de esta última es el mismo que el de El Centro, por lo que ambos tienen experiencia en producciones exitosas y entretenidas. Sin embargo, tal vez por la temática de espionaje y el intento de emular a los estadounidenses, no acaba de ser una serie perfecta. Quizás si hay una segunda temporada, cuenten con un mayor presupuesto y hagan algo con mayor impacto visual.
El reparto no me ha convencido del todo; hay algunos actores cuyos personajes carecen de profundidad y coherencia en sus acciones. El único que me ha encantado y he disfrutado cada vez que aparecía era el personaje de Iñaki Olano, interpretado por David Llorente. Es un viejo zorro astuto, desconfiado, malhumorado y malhablado, que manda a todo el mundo a la mierda. Para mí, es el mejor personaje de la historia, y eso se lo debo todo al actor. En cambio, el personaje que más odié fue la periodista Elsa, quizá porque es un personaje progresista y zurda extrema. No me lo invento, deja muy clara su postura desde el primer episodio.
El personaje de Michelín, que es el protagonista, lo interpreta el actor Juan Diego Botto. No me emocionó ni me molestó. Para ser el protagonista, sus acciones y reacciones eran insípidas, como comer un huevo cocido sin sal. Espero de verdad que, si hacen otra temporada, mejoren los detalles y los defectos de la historia. Busqué información sobre su renovación y no encontré nada, por el momento. Quizás estén esperando a ver si obtiene algún reconocimiento o para evaluar la respuesta del público.
No es una temporada larga, solo seis episodios, así que se pueden ver todos seguidos. Es un producto aceptable que no te dejará boquiabierto, pero si quieres ver algo de espionaje con sabor español, está bien. Así vemos algo diferente a los muchos superagentes de la CIA de las producciones estadounidenses.

Es decir, es aceptable pero no resalta sobre el resto. Tal vez en vez al emular las series norteamericanas les quedó muy suave y deberían tener más acción. He visto series de espionaje, principalmente porque a mi hermano le gustan, y algunas son muy buenas pero nunca había visto una española. Será cuestión de ver si el primer episodio me engancha...

Le falto algo mas de garra, pero es una buena serie, puede que influyera el presupuesto y por eso no hay un gran despliegue para escenas de mayor acción. El concepto y algunos personajes me gustaron, pude que si hacen una segunda temporada y mejoran sus partes flacas, sobresalga mas. Hay potencial, espero que continúen.
Entonces vamos con el espionaje español!!! No viste Dpto Q? A mi me encantó la primer temporada y el mismo actor hace una serie tipo novela de brujas, está genial!!
