[Movie] The Death of Robin Hood

Robin Hood was one of my childhood heroes. As a child, I had a beautiful picture book. It told the story of Robin Hood, the thief who stole from the rich to help the poor. I don't know what I did with it; I lost it a long time ago. I loved it because the pictures looked like actors portraying the characters. I kept it for a long time among the few things I could afford back then.

Over the years, I saw different adaptations of the Robin Hood story. They all told the same story: the champion of Sherwood Forest, with his band of good-hearted thieves, pursued by the villain, the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, and hopelessly in love with the beautiful Lady Marian. One of the most famous adaptations is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.

The Death of Robin Hood caught my attention because it offers a different perspective on the idealized image of the good thief who is always having new adventures. In this film, the tone is bleak, decadent, and initially quite brutal. We are presented with an elderly Robin Hood, tormented by his past, where he was neither good nor did he steal to help the poor. He stole and killed for pleasure.

Did Robin Hood exist? No. Robin Hood is a fictional character, possibly inspired by several real bandits. Furthermore, he was a legend told for centuries, and no one knows exactly how much fantasy and fiction was added to the story. I believe he was created by the powerful of the time, as a medieval populist measure, to entertain the poor with these tales. Speaking of populism applied to the Middle Ages, that's what Rhaynera Targaryen does in the third episode of House of the Dragon: steal from the nobles to appease the poor. The story we all know of Robin Hood is similar.

This film, in addition to departing from the legend as we know it, presents us with a kind of final journey or adventure, where Robin Hood seeks redemption for all the atrocities he has committed throughout his life. It has a good start, and its first half hour is quite violent and doesn't mince words in showing the cruelty of Robin Hood, who doesn't hesitate to kill, even children.

The film has a problem when it becomes a more contemplative story, as if trying to delve into the character's feelings. This is where the story becomes tedious. The only positive aspect of this long section is the cinematography. The beauty amidst that dark tone, thanks to the cinematographer, is what kept me watching until the end.

I prefer the director's two previous films, Pig and the prequel to A Quiet Place. Here, I think he was aiming for something intense and profound, but I would have preferred it to maintain the pace and violence of the first film. Another point I want to highlight, and which I really liked, was the use of folk songs, a very nice touch that you can find on YouTube.

The cast is extraordinary. Hugh Jackman shines as the protagonist. He's that old Robin Hood who longs to find peace in death. Bill Skarsgård plays his old friend Little John, as ruthless as Robin, and Jodie Comer plays Sister Brigid, who runs an abbey on an island where much of the story takes place.

Although I wasn't entirely satisfied with this film, those small positive details I mentioned encouraged me to watch it until the end. It's up to you whether you give it a chance and watch it, although I don't think most people will like it.

No sé qué hice con él; lo perdí hace mucho tiempo. Me encantaba porque las fotos parecían actores interpretando a los personajes. Lo guardé durante mucho tiempo entre las pocas cosas que podía permitirme entonces.

En esta película, el tono es sombrío, decadente e inicialmente bastante brutal. Se nos presenta a un Robin Hood anciano, atormentado por su pasado, donde no era ni bueno ni robaba para ayudar a los pobres. Robaba y mataba por placer.

¿Existió Robin Hood? No. Robin Hood es un personaje de ficción, posiblemente inspirado en varios ladrones reales. Además, fue una leyenda que se contó durante siglos, y nadie sabe con exactitud cuánto de fantasía y ficción se añadió a la historia. Creo que fue creado por los poderosos de la época, como una medida populista medieval, para entretener a los pobres con estas historias. Hablando de populismo aplicado a la Edad Media, eso es lo que hace Rhaynera Targaryen en el tercer episodio de La Casa del Dragón: robar a los nobles para apaciguar a los pobres. Algo parecido es la historia que todos conocemos de Robin Hood.

Esta película, además de alejarse de la leyenda tal como la conocemos, nos presenta una especie de viaje o aventura final, donde Robin Hood busca la redención por todas las atrocidades que ha cometido a lo largo de su vida. Tiene un buen comienzo, y su primera media hora es bastante violenta y no se anda con rodeos al mostrar la crueldad de Robin Hood, quien no duda en matar, incluso a niños.

La película tiene un problema cuando se convierte en una historia más bien contemplativa, como si intentara profundizar en los sentimientos del personaje. Es aquí donde la historia se vuelve aburrida. Lo único positivo de toda esta larga sección es la cinematografía. La belleza en medio de ese tono oscuro, gracias al director de fotografía, fue lo que me mantuvo viendo la película hasta el final.

Prefiero las dos películas anteriores del director, Pig y la precuela de Un lugar tranquilo. Aquí, creo que buscaba algo intenso y profundo, pero hubiera preferido que mantuviera el ritmo y la violencia de la primera película. Otro punto que quiero destacar, y que me gustó mucho, fue el uso de canciones folclóricas, un detalle muy bonito que se puede escuchar buscándolas en YouTube.

El reparto es extraordinario. Hugh Jackman sobresale como protagonista. Es ese viejo Robin Hood que anhela encontrar la paz en la muerte. Bill Skarsgård interpreta a su viejo amigo Little John, tan despiadado como Robin, y Jodie Comer interpreta a la Hermana Brigid, quien está a cargo de una abadía en una isla, donde transcurre gran parte de la historia.

Aunque no quedé del todo satisfecho con esta película, esos pequeños detalles positivos que mencioné me animaron a seguir viéndola hasta el final. Es decisión tuya si le das una oportunidad y la ves, aunque no creo que le guste a la mayoría.
