I wasn't particularly keen to watch this adaptation because I knew, more or less, that I'd find elements and messages with a certain political slant. But I'm not so narrow-minded as to stop watching something just because its message doesn't align with my beliefs. On the contrary, I give them a chance and even appreciate the good points, because you have to admit they know how to tell stories.

What could I expect from the adaptation of The House of the Spirits? The original work already presents a narrative that portrays one side as utterly evil and the other as good and victims. The author, Isabel Allende, is related to Salvador Allende, the leftist Chilean president who wanted to transform Chile into another wonderful paradise like Cuba (how ironic!). She even serves as a producer on this miniseries.

Prime Video is also a producer and distributor, so you can find it in their catalog. The first thing I must say is that I liked the adaptation; I think it's good and it's the right format to bring some novels to life. Just like Netflix adapted Years of Solitude. And, of course, this adaptation is far better than the disaster that was the Hollywood film. Adapting the entire novel into a movie was a risky gamble, especially for a Hollywood production. I was never satisfied with that adaptation, which I remember seeing in theaters in the 90s.

For the miniseries, they assembled a very international cast. There are actors of various nationalities: Spanish, Mexican, Colombian, Chilean... a good mix, which could have seemed absurd. Before watching it, I looked up who the actors were and feared the worst. I thought it would be like a Telemundo telenovela, where characters from the same family have different accents. Luckily, it's not like that; at least, the difference in accents isn't very noticeable.

Book purists, those readers who want all adaptations to be 100% faithful, might complain, but we must remember that the work must be transformed into a language that doesn't completely overwhelm the viewer, as well as being entertaining. I think this miniseries achieves that. The fact that Isabel Allende herself is a producer guarantees that she approved the changes and eliminated anything that didn't contribute to the audiovisual language.

Four generations of a family, with a greater emphasis on its female characters, are portrayed alongside the political transformations of Chile during that era. As expected, the patriarch is the worst of all: ambitious, greedy for money and power. Is that bad? According to those with a leftist mindset, yes, but paradoxically, they are the ones who steal the most and become millionaires while their people grow poorer. It was clear that the message would be that conservatives only care about money and exploiting the poor. The poor characters are very good and broken; they suffer immensely. You know, it's the kind of narrative they preach so much about for social engineering, and that's why Latin American countries never escape these tragedies.

None of that, with which I disagree, prevents me from saying that I enjoyed the miniseries and was captivated by its setting. The excellent cinematography offers some truly beautiful scenes. I also enjoyed the cast. Mexican actor Alfonso Herrera delivers a superb performance as the right-wing patriarch—a villain, rapist, abuser, and enslaver—who will ultimately have to pay for all the evil he has done and receive a dose of reality when he is forced to remain silent in front of those he supported.

I loved the Spanish actress Nicole Wallace, who plays the young Clara. I even liked her more than the veteran Dolores Fonzi, who plays the same character as an adult. I hadn't heard of her before; I only know that she's known in her country for starring in the adaptations of Mercedes Ron's young adult romance novel, but those films are on my "Never Watch" list because, although I love movies, I'm no longer interested in young adult romances.

Whether you've read the novel or not, I recommend giving this adaptation a chance; it only has eight episodes. Let me know what you think in the comments.

No tenía muchas ganas de ver esta adaptación porque sabía, más o menos, que encontraría elementos y mensajes con cierta inclinación política. Pero no soy tan obtusa como para dejar de ver algo solo porque su mensaje no coincida con mis ideas. Al contrario, les doy una oportunidad e incluso aprecio los puntos buenos, porque hay que reconocer que saben cómo contar historias.

¿Qué podía esperar de la adaptación de La casa de los espíritus? La obra original ya presenta un discurso que retrata a un bando como muy malo y al otro como bueno y víctima. La escritora, Isabel Allende, es pariente de Salvador Allende, el presidente chileno de izquierda que quería transformar Chile en otro paraíso maravilloso como Cuba (¡qué ironía!). Incluso participa como productora en esta miniserie.

Prime Video también es productora y distribuidora, así que la pueden encontrar en su catálogo. Lo primero que debo decir es que me gustó la adaptación; creo que es buena y es el formato adecuado para dar vida a algunas novelas. Igual que Netflix adaptó "Años de soledad". Y, por supuesto, esta adaptación es mucho mejor que el desastre que fue la película de Hollywood. Adaptar toda la novela a una película fue una apuesta arriesgada, sobre todo tratándose de una producción de Hollywood. Nunca quedé satisfecho con esa adaptación, que recuerdo haber visto en cines en los años 90.

Para la miniserie, reunieron un elenco muy internacional. Hay actores de diversas nacionalidades: españoles, mexicanos, colombianos, chilenos... una buena mezcla, que podría haber parecido absurda. Antes de verla, vi quiénes eran los actores y temí lo peor. Pensé que sería como una telenovela de Telemundo, donde los personajes de la misma familia tienen acentos diferentes. Por suerte, no es así; al menos, la diferencia de acentos no es muy notoria.

Los puristas de los libros, aquellos lectores que desean que todas las adaptaciones sean 100% fieles, podrían quejarse, pero debemos recordar que la obra debe transformarse en un lenguaje que no abrume por completo al espectador, además de ser entretenido. Creo que esta miniserie lo logra. El hecho de que la propia Isabel Allende sea productora garantiza que aprobó los cambios y eliminó lo que no aportaba al lenguaje audiovisual.

Cuatro generaciones de una familia, con mayor énfasis en sus personajes femeninos, a la vez que se retratan las transformaciones políticas de Chile durante esa época. Como era de esperar, el patriarca es el peor de todos: ambicioso, codicioso de dinero y poder. ¿Es eso malo? Según quienes tienen una mentalidad de izquierda, sí, pero paradójicamente, son ellos quienes más roban y se convierten en millonarios mientras su pueblo se empobrece. Era evidente que el mensaje sería que a los conservadores solo les importa el dinero y explotar a los pobres. Los personajes pobres son muy buenos y están destrozados; sufren enormemente. Ya saben, es el tipo de narrativa que tanto predican para la ingeniería social, y por eso los países latinoamericanos nunca escapan a estas tragedias.

Nada de eso, con lo que no estoy de acuerdo, me impide decir que disfruté la miniserie y que me cautivó su ambientación. La excelente cinematografía ofrece escenas realmente hermosas. También me gustó el reparto. El actor mexicano Alfonso Herrera ofrece una interpretación excelente como el patriarca de derecha, villano, violador, abusivo y esclavizador, que finalmente tendrá que pagar por todo el mal que ha hecho y recibir una dosis de realidad cuando se vea obligado a guardar silencio ante aquellos a quienes apoyó.

Me encantó la actriz española Nicole Wallace, que interpreta a la joven Clara. Incluso me gustó más que la veterana Dolores Fonzi, que interpreta al mismo personaje en su edad adulta. No había oído hablar de ella antes; solo sé que es conocida en su país por protagonizar las adaptaciones de la novela romántica juvenil de Mercedes Ron, pero esas películas están en mi lista de "Nunca ver", porque aunque me encanta el cine, ya no me interesan las películas románticas juveniles.

Me alegra leerte, amigo. La verdad, a mí me pareció interesante, una buena escenografía, actores destacados; es más, me sorprendió el papel de Alfonso Herrera, nunca lo había visto en una faceta como esta; para mí hizo un gran papel, al igual que las protagonistas de Clara. Es una serie con aura tranquila, sin mucho que mostrar, pero a la vez mucho que contar. En fin, vale la pena verla. Saludos.

si, me parece una buena adaptación y la historia, aunque no compagino con su parte ideológica, fue entretenida y la historia atrapa. L actriz español aque interpreto a Clara joven es hermosa. Alfonso Herrera estuvo muy bien.

I remember reading the book at secondary school and loving it; it was one of the books recommended for all the pupils to read, and I enjoyed reading it. I then watched the film, and what I didn’t like about it was that they’d changed the names of the main characters, the grandmother’s name for the granddaughter’s, for example, but overall the adaptation was very good, although nothing compares to the book and the power of the imagination. But it’s true that cinema has to adapt the original to the times, and if the author is involved in this miniseries and she herself approves of the changes, then I think it’s fine.

It’s been so long since I saw the film and read the book that watching the miniseries would be a great way to refresh my memory. There’s a very good cast, and I recognise Dolores Fonzi from Argentine TV series; it’s been ages since I’ve seen her in a production.

Recuerdo cuando leí el libro en la secundaria y me encantó, fue uno de los libros que recomendaban entre la lectura para todas las estudiantes y me gustó hacerlo. Luego vi la película y lo que no me gustó de ella fue que le cambiaran los nombres a los protagonistas, el nombre de la abuela por el de la nieta, por ejemplo, pero en general la adaptación era muy buena, aunque nada se compara con el libro y el poder de la imaginación. Pero si es verdad que el cine debe adaptar lo original a la época y si la escritora forma parte de esta miniserie y ella misma considera bien los cambios entonces me parece correcto.

Hace tanto tiempo que la vi, la película, y que leí el libro, que ver la miniserie sería refrescar la memoria. Hay un muy buen reparto y a Dolores Fonzi la conozco de series de televisión Argentina, hace mucho que no la veo en una producción.

Holaa, me gustó mucho tu reseña, no he leído el libro de la casa de los espíritus pero si me ví la serie y estoy de acuerdo en que fue una buena adaptación quitando su inclinación política, además que también me tomo por sorpresa la actuación de Nicole, porque si he visto otras de sus pelis juveniles, pero ahora creo totalmente que el talento de la actriz en esas ocasiones fue opacado por el guión y la dirección de esas pelis, espero que siga teniendo papeles donde destaque su talento

La mini serie me agrado, esa joven actriz es linda y me gusto su interpretación, espero seleccione bien sus trabajos en el futuro con personajes que la hagan resaltar como aquí. Solo había escuchado su nombre en noticas pero no había visto nada de ella.

Es una buena adaptación muy recomendable, ahora me estoy viendo la adaptación de 100 años de soledad, una de mis novelas favoritas.
