I had already seen the films Aquarius and Bacurau by Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. I liked both, especially Aquarius, starring Sonia Braga. Both films received nominations and awards at various festivals, so the filmmaker has already received considerable praise for his work. I was really looking forward to seeing The Secret Agent, and I even refrained from reading any articles about the film, only watching the trailer, which doesn't give away the plot.

The film has already won awards at Cannes and, at the latest Golden Globes, it was the winner in the Best Foreign Language Film category, and actor Wagner Moura surprisingly won the Best Actor award. This actor already has a career in Hollywood. I've seen him in several movies and television series. The last one I saw him in was the miniseries Dope Thief. I think that has contributed greatly to the film being a strong contender this awards season. The actor is also one of the film's producers, and those Hollywood awards are largely based on public relations and promotion.

I liked the movie, and now that it has won the Golden Globe, it is the clear favorite to win the Oscar, which would mean that Brazil would win that award two years in a row. I liked The Secret Agent more than last year's Oscar-winning Brazilian film, I'm Still Here. Although the latter was inspired by real events, it failed to captivate me, and I was surprised that it won. It's a matter of personal taste.

From its first scene, The Secret Agent immerses us in an atmosphere of death and corruption that prevailed during the dark years of the military dictatorship in Brazil. It's a subject that touches my heart, because I come from another country that suffers from dictatorships. All totalitarian regimes are cruel, and this is evident in the story, where the protagonist is a fugitive who receives help from an underground network that supports political refugees.

Armando, who goes by the name Marcelo, returns to the city of Recife, where his maternal grandparents are taking care of his young son. One of his goals is to leave Brazil with his son, but at the same time he wants to find information about his mother, so the same network that is helping him will get him a job in an office where identity documents are issued.

I think the political and criminal thriller part is fine. The corruption, the ambition of the powerful, the hitmen who will be sent to find and kill him. All that part kept me in suspense, wondering what would happen, but this is where there are some creative decisions that suddenly took me out of the story. For example, a surreal and even comical scene about a leg that terrifies prostitutes and homosexuals in a park. Those things surprised me a little.

That and the fact that the film is too long. It lasts two hours and forty minutes, and there are scenes that, although entertaining, drag on too long, slowing down the pace of the story. Of course, I liked the filmmaker's naturalistic and traditional style. Those scenes in the streets, with people, set in that era. Visually, I liked them, as they were very familiar to me, being from a South American country, so despite the linguistic differences with Brazil, we also have many things in common.

For viewers from other parts of the world, I think it's a somewhat difficult film to digest. The same goes for younger viewers, who are looking for something more dynamic. They are unlikely to want to watch a film that lasts almost three hours. I think it's those exotic images of a city and an era that may have seduced Cannes and the award associations where it has been nominated.

Something devastating, and what strikes me most about this film, is that it reminds us that we have short memories. That's why our societies keep making the same mistakes. That last part, where the memory of a certain character has already faded, where people went on with their lives and seem to have forgotten the blood that was shed.

I invite you to watch it. I don't know if many people will like it, but it's a good movie. I also invite you to look for other movies by the director and watch them.

Ya había visto las películas Aquarius y Bacurau del cineasta brasileño Kleber Mendonça Filho. Me gustaron ambas, especialmente Aquarius, con Sonia Braga. Me gustó la película, y ahora que ha ganado el Globo de Oro, es la clara favorita para ganar el Óscar, lo que significaría que Brasil ganaría ese premio dos años consecutivos. Me gustó más El agente secreto que la película brasileña del año pasado que ganó el Óscar: I'm Still Here. Aunque esta última se inspiraba en hechos reales, no consiguió cautivarme y me sorprendió que ganara. Es cuestión de gustos personales.

Desde su primera escena, El agente secreto nos sumerge en una atmósfera de muerte y corrupción que prevaleció durante los años oscuros de la dictadura militar en Brasil. Es un tema que me llega al corazón, porque soy de otro país que sufre dictaduras. Todos los regímenes totalitarios son crueles, y eso se ve en la historia, donde el protagonista es un fugitivo que recibe ayuda de una red clandestina que apoya a los refugiados políticos.

Armando, quien usa el nombre de Marcelo, regresa a la ciudad de Recife, donde sus abuelos maternos cuidan de su hijo pequeño. Uno de sus objetivos es salir de Brasil con su hijo, pero al mismo tiempo quiere encontrar información sobre su madre, por lo que la misma red que le está ayudando le conseguirá un trabajo en una oficina donde se expiden documentos de identidad.

Creo que la parte de thriller político y criminal está bien. La corrupción, la ambición de los poderosos, los sicarios que serán enviados a buscarlo y matarlo. Toda esa parte me mantuvo en suspenso, preguntándome qué pasaría, pero aquí es donde hay algunas decisiones creativas que de repente me sacaron de la historia. Por ejemplo, una escena surrealista e incluso cómica sobre una pierna que aterroriza a las prostitutas y a los homosexuales en un parque. Esas cosas me sorprendieron un poco.

Eso y el hecho de que la película es demasiado larga. Dura dos horas y cuarenta minutos, y hay escenas que, aunque entretenidas, se alargan demasiado, ralentizando el ritmo de la historia. Por supuesto, me gustó el estilo naturalista y costumbrista del cineasta. Esas escenas en las calles, con gente, ambientadas en esa época. Visualmente, me gustaron, ya que me resultaban muy familiares, al ser de un país sudamericano, por lo que, a pesar de las diferencias lingüísticas con Brasil, también tenemos muchas cosas en común.

Para los espectadores de otras latitudes, creo que es una película algo difícil de digerir. Lo mismo ocurre con los espectadores más jóvenes, que buscan algo más dinámico. Es poco probable que quieran ver una película que dura casi tres horas. Creo que son esas imágenes exóticas de una ciudad y una época las que pueden haber seducido a Cannes y a las asociaciones de premios donde ha sido nominada.

Algo devastador, y lo que más me llama la atención de esta película, es que nos recuerda que tenemos poca memoria. Por eso nuestras sociedades siguen cometiendo los mismos errores. Esa última parte, donde la memoria de cierto personaje ya se ha difuminado, donde la gente siguió con sus vidas y parece haber olvidado la sangre que se derramó.

los invito a verla. No sé si gustará a mucha gente, pero es una buena película. También los invito a buscar otras películas del director y verlas.
