Reviewing the Netflix catalog, a title caught my attention. Based on a novel and with an excellent cast my expectations were good. But unfortunately the film that has a great start, wrecks in a sea of soulless, passionless frames.
Revisando el catalogo de Netflix encontré este film basado en una novela y con un excelente elenco, mis expectativas eran buenas. Pero lamentablemente el film que tiene un gran inicio, naufraga en un mar de fotogramas sin alma, sin pasión.

The production company behind the film is Likely Story, owned by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu. The production company has some excellent films in its filmography. Sleep Dealer, by Alex Rivera. Synecdoche, New York, written and directed by the brilliant Charlie Kaufman, were the first independent films made by the company. They have ventured into different genres, drama, romance, comedy, horror, etc. Their biggest success was with the film Foxcatcher, the powerful drama starring Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum and a phenomenal Steve Carrel that received excellent reviews and Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
Since 2018 they have had an agreement with Netflix who has been responsible for distributing the production company's films on their platform. Last year they released Charlie Kaufman's film I'm Thinking of Ending Things and you can read my review at this link
Filmmakers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are in charge of directing and that also played a role in raising my expectations. They both made their names with the independent film American Splendor, starring Paul Giamatti, a film that won an award at Cannes and whose screenplay received an Oscar nomination. They are also part of the directing team that has directed episodes of the extraordinary series Succession.
Most readers know that I like indie films. The directors have experience in dramas and comedies with that indie touch, but this time they are daring with the suspense and supernatural genre.
Perhaps the change of genres they are used to was too abrupt and that's why the result is a film that fails in the way it tells the story.
When I finished watching it, I felt an empty movie, a product made to order, without passion. This little boat navigates between several waters, suspense, horror, haunted houses, drama, crime and fails to focus convincingly on any of them. That's why the ship ends up sinking in the middle of a storm of errors.

La mayoría de lectores saben que me gusta el cine indie. Los directores tienen experiencia en dramas y comedias, pero en esta ocasión se atreven con el género de suspenso y sobrenatural.
Quizás el cambio de géneros a los que están acostumbrados es muy brusco y por eso el resultado es una película que falla en la forma que nos cuenta la historia.
Cuando termine de verlo, sentí un film vació, un producto hecho por encargo, sin pasión. Este pequeño barco navega entre varias aguas, suspenso, terror, casas embrujadas, drama, crimen y no logra enfocarse convincentemente en ninguna. Por eso el bote termina hundiéndose en medio de una tormenta de errores.
What is the plot of Seen and Heard?
George Claire and Catherine Claire are a happily married couple with a young daughter. They both live in New York City in 1980. She is an art restorer and he is an art teacher who has received a job offer to teach in a rural town in the Hudson Valley. The family moves into an old house in that out-of-the-way place. Catherine wants to relate to the community, the change from city to town takes its toll, the marriage falls into a dull routine. Soon she feels a strange presence in the house, apparently there are spirits that in life inhabited that place. Catehrine discovers the past and the events that took place within those walls. She will receive the help of Floyd DeBeers, dean of the university, who leads a group that performs paranormal sessions. Meanwhile, George must face serious problems when the lies on which he has built his life are uncovered. What happened in that house? Who are those spirits that seem to want to alert Catherine to something? Are they good? Are they bad? Who is George really? What is he hiding? What are the lies he has told? Not everything is what it seems nor is everyone so good in this story.

The drama of a married couple with the common problems of routine is mixed with the strange supernatural occurrences present in that house. But the filmmakers can't seem to decide on the best approach to the story.
The haunted house subgenre has to be very well developed to work. In that respect they fail miserably. There is no suspense. There is no intrigue to grab us. The ghosts and specters that appear on the scene do not convey fear. There is not a single Jump Scare effect, essential when telling stories with ghosts.
At one point in the story (Spoiler Alert) there is a session to talk to the spirits of the house. That sequence struck me as poorly shot, so ridiculous that I couldn't help but laugh. You can tell the filmmakers have no experience in horror films, because they conveyed to me it was comedy instead of something terrifying.
There is an attempt to give depth by including the work of Emanuel Swedenborg within the context of the story. The dean of the university is a fervent follower of the Swedish scientist and theologian's ideas. It is thanks to a thesis written by George on Swedenborg that he obtains the position of professor. There are constant references both to the pictorial work and to Swedenborg's famous book De caelo et ejus mirabilibus et de inferno, ex auditis et visis. El drama de un matrimonio con los problemas comunes de la rutina se mezcla con los extraños hechos sobrenaturales presentes en esa casa. Pero los cineastas parecen no decidirse donde enfocarse
El sub genero de casas embrujadas hay que saberlo desarrollar muy bien para que funcione. En ese aspecto fallan estrepitosamente. No hay suspenso. No hay intriga que nos atrape. Los fantasmas y espectros que aparecen en escena no transmiten miedo. No hay ni un solo efecto Jump Scare, esencial cuando se narran historias con fantasmas.
En un momento de la película (Alerta Spoiler) hay una sesión para hablar con los espíritus de la casa. Esa secuencia me pareció mal rodada, tan ridícula que no pude evitar reírme. Se nota que los cineastas no son experimentados en el cine de terror, porque me transmitieron fue comedia en vez de algo terrorífico.
Se intenta dar profundidad al incluir la obra de Emanuel Swedenborg dentro del contexto de la historia. El decano de la universidad es ferviente seguidor de las ideas del científico y teólogo sueco. Es gracias a una tesis escrita por George sobre Swedenborg que obtiene el empleo de profesor. Hay constantes referencias tanto a la obra pictórica, como al famoso libro "De caelo et ejus mirabilibus et de inferno, ex auditis et visis" de Swedenborg. I found the marriage drama more interesting than the supernatural elements. A couple with their daughter, seemingly happy. Catherine gives up a good job to support her husband who has the opportunity to work at a university. All that happiness is lost, the relationship cracks to a climax with devastating consequences.
I don't know if it is captured in the novel in the same way, but it seems to me an imposition of the script to be in line with the prevailing social message of today. The woman who does everything her husband orders her to do, but over time gains self-confidence, until she can no longer stand her husband's lies and wants to take control of her destiny.
She is a good woman. On the other hand, he is a character we see as a liar, unfaithful and hiding many secrets. As viewers we always see him as the bad man he is. Everything is narrated in such a linear way that there is no room for mystery. She is the oppressed, the submissive and any mistakes she may make are a reaction to the emotional suffering inflicted on her by her husband. Empathizing with Catherine doesn't come naturally, I felt it was imposed by the script.
What does a person do when cornered? He starts to act desperately. That's what happens to George when all his lies are discovered. But for a mind so clever at lying and deceiving to commit crimes in such a clumsy way that by logic he will be the prime suspect, I was completely disappointed.
By this point in the movie I no longer cared at all about the story, it becomes predictable in its ending, there is no surprise anymore. I knew it was inevitable that a terrible event would happen in the house, just as it did with the previous occupants.
El drama matrimonial me pareció más interesante que los elementos sobrenaturales. Una pareja con su hija, aparentemente son felices. Catherine renuncia a un buen trabajo para apoyar a su esposo que tiene la oportunidad de trabajar en una universidad. Toda esa felicidad se va perdiendo, la relación se resquebraja hasta llegar a un momento álgido y con consecuencias devastadoras.
No sé si en la novela está plasmado de igual manera, pero siento que es una imposición del guion para estar en la onda del mensaje social imperante en la actualidad. La mujer que hace todo lo que su marido ordena , pero con el tiempo se va sintiendo más segura de sí misma, hasta no soportar más las mentiras de su marido y quiere tomar las riendas de su destino.
Ella es una buena mujer. En cambio el es un personaje que vemos como miente, es infiel y esconde muchos secretos. Como espectadores siempre lo vemos como el hombre malo que es. Se nos narra todo tan lineal, que no hay lugar para el misterio. Ella es la oprimida, sumisa y que los errores que puede cometer son una reacción al sufrimiento emocional que le infringe su marido. El empatizar con Catherine no resulta natural, sentí que era impuesto por el guion.
¿Qué hace una persona cuando se ve acorralada? Comienza a actuar desesperadamente. Eso ocurre con George cuando todas sus mentiras se van descubriendo. Pero que una mente tan inteligente para mentir y engañar, cometa unos crímenes tan torpemente que por cuestión de lógica el será el primer sospechoso, me decepciono por completo.
En este punto del film ya no me importaba absolutamente nada la historia, se vuelve predecible su final, ya no hay sorpresa. Sabía que era inevitable que ocurriera un terrible hecho en la casa, tal como paso con los anteriores ocupantes.
The landscapes of rural America in the film are not so striking. The cinematography somewhat reflects the atmosphere of the American Gothic genre. The cinematographer is veteran Larry Smith, a pro who worked with Stanley Kubrick and Nicolas Winding Refn on visually stunning films. Again I repeat, it looks like it was a job done with little desire on everyone's part. A contractual compromise.
I don't want to keep throwing more stones at the film. I also don't want you to not see it. I can be wrong in all my appreciations. Art is subjective. A film can be a disaster for me and for you it is a masterpiece. For me the story fails because it doesn't decide which way to go, between marriage drama and haunted houses, it leaves us with a forgettable film.
Los paisajes de la América rural del film no son tan impactantes. La fotografía refleja un poco la atmósfera del género gótico americano. El director de fotografía es el veterano Larry Smith, un profesional que trabajo con Stanley Kubrick y Nicolas Winding Refn, en películas de gran impacto visual. Vuelvo a repetir, parece que esto fue un trabajo hecho con pocas ganas por parte de todos. Un compromiso contractual.
No quiero seguir lanzando más piedras al film. Yo puedo estar equivocado en todas mis apreciaciones. Una película puede ser un desastre para mí y para ti es una obra maestra. Para mí la historia falla porque no decide cual camino escoger, entre drama matrimonial y casas embrujadas, nos deja una película olvidable.
The novel.
It is an adaptation of a bestselling novel published in 2016: All Things Cease to Appear, by American author Elizabeth Brundage. I haven't read the novel, I can't opine whether the flaws come from the source material.
Elizabeth Brundage has three other novels written, but I have searched for information only on All Things Stop Appearing. Most who have read the novel praise the prose of the writer, who has also worked as a screenwriter for the American Film Institute. I did feel that one of the big changes introduced in the adaptation is the police investigation, which in the novel is handled by a cop and in the film it's just the town sheriff in uniform at the end.
I think a non-linear, investigation-focused narrative was best for the film. But the novel also seems to suffer from the same genre saturation as the movie. All of the author's novels are available on Amazon , if you are interested in comparing them.

Es una adaptación de una novela éxito de ventas publicada en el año 2016: All Things Cease to Appear de la autora americana Elizabeth Brundage. No he leído la novela, no puedo opinar si los defectos provienen del material original.
Elizabeth Brundage tiene otras tres novelas escritas, pero busque información solo de All Things Cease to Appear. La mayoría de los que leyeron la novela alaban la prosa de la escritora, quien además ha trabajado como guionista para el American Film Institute. Si descubrí que uno de los grandes cambios hechos en la adaptación, es la investigación policial, que en la novela está a cargo de un policía y en la película solo es el sheriff del pueblo que usa su uniforme en la parte final.
Pienso que una narración no lineal y enfocándose en una investigación, era lo mejor para el film. Pero la novela parece que adolece también de la misma saturación de géneros. Todas las novelas de la autora esta disponibles en Amazon , por si le interesa compararlas.
Amanda Seyfried plays Catherine Claire. A woman who leaves her job in the big city to fully support her husband in this new adventure. She and her little daughter Fanny are the ones who will feel the presence of ghostly entities in the house. She is the character who evolves and undergoes a transformation. The actress is super famous, she was one of the Oscar nominees for Mank, she needs no introduction and in the film she does a solvent job. Her presence is one of the positive aspects of the film.
Amanda Seyfried interpreta a Catherine Claire. Una mujer que renuncia a su trabajo en la gran ciudad para apoyar totalmente a su marido en esa nueva aventura. Ella y su pequeña hija Fanny son las que sentirán la presencia de entes fantasmales en la casa. Es el personaje que evoluciona y sufre una transformación. La actriz es famosa, fue una de las nominadas al Oscar por Mank, no necesita presentación y en la película hace un trabajo solvente. Su presencia es uno de los aspectos positivos del film.
James Norton plays George Claire. A man who has built his whole life on lies. He is the opposite of what he appears to be. But getting things through lies will get him into serious trouble, making him take desperate and criminal measures. We dislike the character because we are aware of the lies and how he deceives the fragile Catherine. Of Norton's work I can only say that it was good, without impressing much. I recommend watching the series where this actor has worked. ( Grantchester, McMafia, Happy Valley) and especially the miniseries The Trial of Christine Keeler where the actor was great.
James Norton interpreta a George Claire.Un hombre que ha forjado toda su vida a través de mentiras. Es todo lo contrario a lo que aparenta ser. Pero el obtener cosas por medio de mentiras, lo meterá en graves problemas, haciendo que tome medidas desesperadas y criminales. El personaje nos cae mal, porque somos consientes de las mentiras y como engaña a la frágil Catherine. El trabajo de Norton solo puedo decir que estuvo bien, sin impresionar mucho. Recomiendo ver las series donde ha trabajado este actor. (Grantchester, McMafia, Happy Valley) y especialmente la mini serie The Trial of Christine Keeler donde el actor estuvo estupendo.
F. Murray Abraham plays Floyd DeBeers. head of departments at the university, scholar of the theories of Emanuel Swedenborg and leader of a group of villagers who hold sessions to communicate with the spirits that inhabit all those houses in the town that were built in the eighteenth century. The veteran actor has a great career in Hollywood and always stands out in his performances, even if they are small roles.
F. Murray Abraham interpreta a Floyd DeBeers, jefe de departamentos de la universidad, estudioso de las teorías de Emanuel Swedenborg y líder de un grupo de personas del pueblo que hacen sesiones para comunicarse con los espíritus que habitan en todas esas casas construidas en el siglo 18. Rhea Seehorn plays Justine. Another college professor, she is George's co-worker. She befriends Catherine and helps her realize that she needs to be a more independent woman. Justine will also be one of those who uncovers several of George's secrets, putting her life in danger. I loved seeing the actress, I'm a fan of her in the Better Call Saul series where she plays Kim.
Rhea Seehorn interpreta a Justine. Otra profesora de la universidad, compañera de trabajo de George. Ella entabla una amistad con Catherine y la ayuda a darse cuenta que debe ser una mujer más independiente. Justine también será una de las que descubra varios secretos de George, poniendo su vida en peligro. Me encanto ver a la actriz, soy su fan en la serie Better Call Saul , done ella interpreta a Kim.
Things Heard & Seen is a movie that serves as a filler in the Netflix catalog. It can be watched on a Sunday afternoon. It has no impact nor is it transcendent. In my opinion it is a flawed film as it lacks balance between the drama and haunted house genre.
I have seen independent films made with little money in recent months that are better than this Netflix backed production. It seems that with more money available, they do things poorly. I don't think Amanda Seyfried's paycheck is low.

Things Heard & Seen es un film que sirve para rellenar el catalogo de Netflix. Puedes verla una tarde de domingo. No impacta ni es trascendental. Desde mi punto de vista es una película fallida al no tener equilibrio entre los géneros de drama y casas embrujas.
He visto en los últimos meses películas independientes hechas con poco dinero, mejores que esta producción que tiene el respaldo de Netflix. Parece que con más dinero disponible, hacen las cosas mal. No creo que el sueldo de Amanda Seyfried sea bajo.

Cuando un libro no me gusto no lo termino, porque lleva mas tiempo. pero la mayoría de las películas si las termino de ver completa, así sean muy malas jajaja. Esta película falla en todos los géneros que abarca. Pero igual recomiendo verla, porque cada quien tiene sus gustos y tenga una opinión diferente sobre la película. Una peli sobre hombres lobos que reseñe hace unos días, hecha con cuatro duros, es superior a esta que contó con recursos de Netflix. Todo el presupuesto como que se lo llevo Amanda Seyfried.
Si, la tenía ya sabes marcada para que me avise Netflix cuando este disponible y la vi con mucho cuidado pero joder para mi es super pesada y definitivamente me dio sueño en varias escenas, a los 40 minutos la dejé de ver.
ve la miniserie El Inocente. esa te va a volar la cabeza por todos sus giros.

Es un fiasco total, con una trama dudosa y un final que no tiene sentido y además predecible. Jamás volveré a colocar la opción de autodescargas en Netflix.
Jajaja Si. Cada vez estoy convencido que esto fue un trabajo totalmente por encargo. Hecho sin ganas. Para tener con que rellenar el catalogo. Hay mucho talento detrás de este film para un resultado desequilibrado. No eran los directores adecuados para este tipo de historia
I really enjoyed this film. Sure I would have changed some things, but overall I was left happy with what I had seen.
I really liked Things Heard and Seen, yet I wouldn't say that it is remarkable and I'm sure that in 5 years I'll forget it ever existed.
For me, I watch a lot of intense film, so it is nice to experience something that is interesting enough to keep my attention while also not causing deep thoughts and emotions. In fact, I believe that I enjoyed Things Heard and Seen thanks to the fact that I didn't get overly invested and risk an aneurysm or chaotic cry.
Another thing that appealed to me, something that you didn't like, was the balance between genres. On the supernatural side, I was happy that the ghosts were calmly represented and not hyper focused on. I do believe that a little more depth there would have been nice, but having experienced many real life situations with spirits, I sometimes get ill of the negative representation of spirits on screen. I also find it tiresome that if a spirit is in a movie it must grossly be the center of attention. With this film, the antagonist is the husband, not the spirits, so it makes sense that the supernatural aspect is lesser than norm.
The balance between supernatural, drama, horror, and crime lent the feeling of being present in the characters lives. No one porportion was the main dish- as in real life; everything is a whole.
I end by noting that I believe Things Heard and Seen could have been better if the film were 30-45 minutes longer. Almost everything felt like a quick whip, like a child telling a story- "and then, and then, and then". The story points were there, and then... onn

The film did not meet the expectations I had. I still don't think they were the right directors for this type of story. I was more drawn to the family conflict than anything supernatural related, but I feel it lacked something, excitement, intrigue and mystery.
I haven't read the novel, but I have researched blogs of people who have reviewed the book and I think the source material also suffers from this clumping of genres. Many of the opinions of those who read the novel, agreed that it covered too many topics. Although in the book there does seem to be a police investigation by a detective, from what I could gather. If I manage to find the book in my native language I will surely give it a read to see the differences with the movie.
