This movie blew my mind, and I think your review perfectly captures why. You're absolutely right—"one of the best of the year" is a title it truly deserves. And I agree 100% that the expectation of pure horror may not be met, but what it delivers in return is a much richer mix.
What struck me most was Ryan Coogler's skillful way of interweaving historical horror (slavery and the KKK) with supernatural horror (vampires). It doesn't feel forced; on the contrary, it feels like a perfect metaphor for how the past and its demons continue to lurk, even when physical "freedom" is achieved. Mississippi in 1932 wasn't truly free.
I'm glad it moves away from "victim propaganda" and focuses on intelligent critique and cultural celebration. It's a film that has a lot to say without being didactic.
It is an excellent film in terms of direction, storytelling, and acting; I think it had been a while since I had thoroughly enjoyed a film as much as Sinners. This film does not hide what happened during the era of slavery and what subsequently led to the emergence of racist groups. It is a part of history and how it influences the characters, but I believe, or rather, I reaffirm that there is no outright propaganda, but rather a celebration of African-American culture without clearly hiding the atrocious moments in its history, and by adding supernatural horror with vampires, it elevates it even further.
